Book excerpt: The Seventh International Conference on Laser Spectroscopy or SEICOLS'85 was held at the Maui Surf Hotel, Hawaii, USA, June 24 to 28, 1985. Like its predecessors at Vail, Megeve, Jackson Lake, Rottach-Egern, Jasper Park, and Interlaken, SEICOLS '85 aimed at providing an informal setting for active scientists to meet and discuss recent developments and applications in laser spectroscopy. The Conference site on the sunny sands of famed Kaanapali Beach on the Island of Maui, although perhaps not the traditional mountain resort, offered nonetheless an atmosphere most inspiring to creative discussions during the unscheduled afternoons. The Conference was truly international: 223 scientists represented 19 countries, including Australia, Canada, People's Republic of China, Denmark, Finland, France Germany (FRG), Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Netherlands, New Zealand, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and U.S.A. The intense scientific program included 14 topical sessions with 59 invited talks. Approximately 60 additional invited papers and 16 postdeadline papers were presented during three lively evening poster sessions. The present Proceedings contain oral as well as poster and postdeadline papers. We thank all authors for the timely preparation of their manuscripts, now available to a wider audience. We would also like to thank the members of the International Steering Committee for their valuable suggestions and advice. Our special thanks go to the members of the Program Committee for their painstaking efforts.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Frontiers of Laser Spectroscopy of Gases" held in the Hotel Golf Mar, Vimeiro, near Torres Vedras, Portugal from 30 March to 10 April 1987. The objective of the meeting was to take stock of the recent technological developments involving lasers and to assess their impact on spectroscopy. The whole range of wavelengths from the far infrared through to the extreme ultraviolet was covered. In addition, specific applications to both atoms and molecules were described. Indeed, one of the most successful and pleasant aspects of the Institute was the joint participation of atomic physicists and molecular spectro scopists, who meet all too rarely these days. The Institute also succeeded in covering a wide time span from the very earliest days of lasers to some of the very latest developments in both lasers and their applications to spectroscopy. There were 14 invited lecturers, giving a total of 40 lectures, and 89 other participants at the Institute. Each of the invited lecturers has contributed a chapter to this volume. In addition, on Thursday 2nd April a special one-day session was held in the Chemistry Department at the University of Coimbra to mark the retirement of Professor Dr. F.

The scientific program included 14 topical sessions with 50 invited talks, ranging in length from 20 to 40 minutes. About 70 additional in vited contributions were presented in two evening poster sessions. A third evening session included 4 oral and 18 poster post-deadline presentations.

Book excerpt: This is a collection of papers presented at the Topical Meeting on Optical BistabiJity (OB3) held December 2-4,1985 in Tucson, Arizona. The increase in attendance to almost 200 shows that interest continues to grow in the sub ject of optical bistability (OB) and its wider implications both in application to "optical digital computing" and to basic physics, notably instabilities and spatial effects. The maturing of the field is evidenced by the fact that the number of experimental papers has caught up with the number of theoretical ones. These trends were already apparent in OB2 and the 1984 Royal Society Meeting on Optical Bistabilty, Dynamical Nonlinearity and Photonic Logic. Progress in experiment.al topics included guided-wave OB, mostly ther mal, picol'econd switching, studies on quite a number of new materials, op tical computing, and pattern recognition using arrays of nonlinear etalons. Theoretical progress ranged from rather practical calculations on device per formance, noise effects on switching, and transverse and longitudinal spatial effects to fundamental studies of dynamics, instabilities, and chaos. The Conference also included both theoretical ideas on optical computer archit.ecture and intrinsic OB circuit elements such as as full adder as well as t.he first demonstration of an intrinsic optical circuit in the form of a cas cadable loop with bufferd st.ores. A first demostration of a simple pattern recognition algorithm using 2-D arrays of spots on a ZnSe int.erference filter was reported.
