Book Laser Spectroscopy at Accelerator Facilities

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy at Accelerator Facilities written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of lasers in exciting fast atomic and molecular ions produced in accelerators is discussed. Collinear excitation of the ions is most efficient, and several examples of laser-induced fluorescence are given. These include tests of relativistic atomic structure, and atomic and molecular hyperfine measurements. Higher precision can be attained using rf double-resonance techniques in some cases. A variant of this technique, the raman double-resonance technique, is also introduced. The production of an optically-pumped polarized target is also described, together with an experiment on polarized electron pick-up in a fast heavy-ion beam. 16 refs., 19 figs., 1 tab.

Book Applied Laser Spectroscopy for Nuclear Physics

Download or read book Applied Laser Spectroscopy for Nuclear Physics written by Thomas Day Goodacre and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-09-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis explores two distinct applications of laser spectroscopy: the study of nuclear ground state properties, and element selective radioactive ion beam production. It also presents the methods and results of an investigation into isotope shifts in the mercury isotopic chain. These Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) developments are detailed, together with an RILIS ionization scheme that allowed laser ionized ion beams of chromium, germanium, radium and tellurium to be generated at the Isotope Mass Separator On-Line (ISOLDE) facility. A combination of laser spectroscopy with decay spectroscopy and mass spectrometry unambiguously demonstrated a cessation of the extreme shape staggering first observed in the 1970s and revealed the characteristic kink at the crossing of the N=126 shell closure. A series of RILIS developments were required to facilitate this experiment, including mercury “ionization scheme” development and the coupling of the RILIS with an arc discharge ion source. Laser spectroscopy has since become a powerful tool for nuclear physics and the Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS), of the ISOLDE facility at CERN, is a prime example. Highlighting important advances in this field, the thesis offers a unique and revealing resource.

Book Synchrotron Light Sources and Free Electron Lasers

Download or read book Synchrotron Light Sources and Free Electron Lasers written by Eberhard J. Jaeschke and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-05-27 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardly any other discovery of the nineteenth century did have such an impact on science and technology as Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen’s seminal find of the X-rays. X-ray tubes soon made their way as excellent instruments for numerous applications in medicine, biology, materials science and testing, chemistry and public security. Developing new radiation sources with higher brilliance and much extended spectral range resulted in stunning developments like the electron synchrotron and electron storage ring and the freeelectron laser. This handbook highlights these developments in fifty chapters. The reader is given not only an inside view of exciting science areas but also of design concepts for the most advanced light sources. The theory of synchrotron radiation and of the freeelectron laser, design examples and the technology basis are presented. The handbook presents advanced concepts like seeding and harmonic generation, the booming field of Terahertz radiation sources and upcoming brilliant light sources driven by laser-plasma accelerators. The applications of the most advanced light sources and the advent of nanobeams and fully coherent x-rays allow experiments from which scientists in the past could not even dream. Examples are the diffraction with nanometer resolution, imaging with a full 3D reconstruction of the object from a diffraction pattern, measuring the disorder in liquids with high spatial and temporal resolution. The 20th century was dedicated to the development and improvement of synchrotron light sources with an ever ongoing increase of brilliance. With ultrahigh brilliance sources, the 21st century will be the century of x-ray lasers and their applications. Thus, we are already close to the dream of condensed matter and biophysics: imaging single (macro)molecules and measuring their dynamics on the femtosecond timescale to produce movies with atomic resolution.

Book Collinear Laser Spectroscopy of Neutron rich Niobium

Download or read book Collinear Laser Spectroscopy of Neutron rich Niobium written by and published by . This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperfine structure spectra and isotope shifts of the neutron-rich nuclei \(^{99}\)Nb, \(^{101}\)Nb, \(^{102}\)Nb and \(^{103}\)Nb were obtained at the IGISOL (Ion Guide Isotope Separator On-Line) facility at the accelerator laboratory of the University of Jyväskylä. The data were taken using collinear laser spectroscopy of bunched beams. Optical pumping from the ground state to populate metastable atomic states in the ion beam cooler allowed efficient spectroscopy of the ionic system that would otherwise be inaccessible due to a lack of suitable ground state resonance lines. The measurements of the hyperfine structure and the isotope shifts contribute valuable nuclear information to the understanding of the \(A\) ~ 100 region which displays a sudden onset of deformation that cannot be explained by the single particle shell model. It was possible to confirm the spin assignments for \(^{99}\)Nb, \(^{101}\)Nb and \(^{103}\)Nb as \(I\) = 9/2, \(I\) = 5/2 and \(I\) = 5/2 respectively. The extracted information on the mean square charge radii, \(\delta\bigr^2\big\), the magnetic dipole moments, \(\mu\), and the electric quadrupole moments, \(Q\), confirm a shape change of nuclei at \(N\) = 60 from soft and oblate (for \(N\)

Book Frontiers of Laser Spectroscopy of Gases

Download or read book Frontiers of Laser Spectroscopy of Gases written by A.C.P. Alves and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the lectures presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Frontiers of Laser Spectroscopy of Gases" held in the Hotel Golf Mar, Vimeiro, near Torres Vedras, Portugal from 30 March to 10 April 1987. The objective of the meeting was to take stock of the recent technological developments involving lasers and to assess their impact on spectroscopy. The whole range of wavelengths from the far infrared through to the extreme ultraviolet was covered. In addition, specific applications to both atoms and molecules were described. Indeed, one of the most successful and pleasant aspects of the Institute was the joint participation of atomic physicists and molecular spectro scopists, who meet all too rarely these days. The Institute also succeeded in covering a wide time span from the very earliest days of lasers to some of the very latest developments in both lasers and their applications to spectroscopy. There were 14 invited lecturers, giving a total of 40 lectures, and 89 other participants at the Institute. Each of the invited lecturers has contributed a chapter to this volume. In addition, on Thursday 2nd April a special one-day session was held in the Chemistry Department at the University of Coimbra to mark the retirement of Professor Dr. F.

Other topics include hole burning, dark states, slow light, and coherent transient spectroscopy, as well as atom optics and atom interferometry. In the second half of the text, the authors consider applications in which the radiation field is quantized. Topics include spontaneous decay, optical pumping, sub-Doppler laser cooling, the Heisenberg equations of motion for atomic and field operators, and light scattering by atoms in both weak and strong external fields. The concluding chapter offers methods for creating entangled and spin-squeezed states of matter. Instructors can create a one-semester course based on this book by combining the introductory chapters with a selection of the more advanced material. A solutions manual is available to teachers.
