Book Laser Spectroscopy and Photochemistry on Metal Surfaces

Download or read book Laser Spectroscopy and Photochemistry on Metal Surfaces written by Hai-Lung Dai and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1995 with total page 645 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using lasers to induce and probe surface processes has the advantages of quantum state specificity, species selectivity, surface sensitivity, fast time-resolution, high frequency resolution, and accessibility to full pressure ranges. These advantages make it highly desirable to use light to induce, control, or monitor surface chemical and physical processes. Recent applications of laser based techniques in studying surface processes have stimulated new developments and enabled the understanding of fundamental problems in energy transfer and reactions. This volume will include discussions on spectroscopic techniques, energy transfer, desorption dynamics, and photochemistry.

This book was released on 1997 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High resolution gas phase photoelectron spectra are reported for a series of trimethylphosphine substituted tungsten carbonyls and cyclopentadienyl derivatives of indium (CpIn) and thallium (CpTl). The advantages of using monochromatic synchrotron radiation PES for studying the electronic structure of organometallic molecules are demonstrated.

Book Energetics of Organometallic Species

Download or read book Energetics of Organometallic Species written by José A. Martinho Simões and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview of modern organometallic thermochemistry, made by some of the most active scientists in the area, is offered in this book. The contents correspond to the seventeen lectures delivered at the NATO ASI Energetics of Organometallic Species (Curia, Portugal, September 1991), plus three other invited contributions from participants of that summer school. These papers reflect a variety of research interests, and discuss results obtained with several techniques. It is therefore considered appropriate to add a few preliminary words, attempting to bring some unity out of that diversity. In the first three chapters, results obtained by classical calorimetric methods are described. Modern organometallic thermochemistry started in Manchester, with Henry Skinner, and his pioneering work is briefly surveyed in the first chapter. The historical perspective is followed by a discussion of a very actual issue: the trends of stepwise bond dissociation enthalpies. Geoff Pilcher, another Manchester thermochemist, makes, in chapter 2, a comprehensive and authoritative survey of problems found in the most classical of thermochemical techniques - combustion calorimetr- applied to organometallic compounds. Finally, results from another classical technique, reaction-solution calorimetry, are reviewed in the third chapter, by Tobin Marks and coworkers. More than anybody else, Tobin Marks has used thermochemical values to define synthetic strategies for organometallic compounds, thus indicating an application of thermochemical data of which too little use has been made so far.

Book Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Exotic Species

Download or read book Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Exotic Species written by Terry A. Yen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract Anion Photoelectron Spectroscopy of Exotic Species By Terry A. Yen Doctor of Philosophy in Chemistry University of California, Berkeley Professor Daniel M. Neumark, Chair Anion photoelectron spectroscopy is performed on a variety of small, unstable species in both the gas and condensed phases. For the gas-phase studies, the properties of the astrophysically significant molecules C3N- and C5N- and the biologically meaningful deprotonated DNA nucleobases were investigated. Spectra of C3N- and C5N- were obtained at 283 nm using slow electron velocity-map imaging and at 213 nm using field-free time-of-flight, respectively. Adiabatic electron affinities for both species, a term value for the first excited state of C5N, and vibrational frequencies for the degenerate cis and trans bending modes of C3N were determined. Spectra of deprotonated thymine and deprotonated cytosine at 213 nm were obtained to explore their excited state dynamics to understand the photostability of DNA. For the condensed phase studies, a new spectrometer, the liquid microjet apparatus, was assembled and used to measure the vertical binding energy of the solvated electron. A microjet flowing a salt solution intersects a laser at either 266 nm or 213 nm. Two photons from a single nanosecond laser pulse are used to first generate solvated electrons using charge-transfer-to-solvent excitation and to then eject them into vacuum, where they are detected using field-free time-of-flight.

Book Femtosecond Photoelectron Spectroscopy a New Tool for the Study of Anion Dynamics

Download or read book Femtosecond Photoelectron Spectroscopy a New Tool for the Study of Anion Dynamics written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new experimental technique for the time-resolved study of anion reactions is presented. Using femtosecond laser pulses, which provide extremely fast ([approx] 100 fs) time resolution, in conjunction with photoelectron spectroscopy, which reveals differences between anion and neutral potential energy surfaces, a complex anion reaction can be followed from its inception through the formation of asymptotic products. Experimental data can be modeled quantitatively using established theoretical approaches, allowing for the refinement of potential energy surfaces as well as dynamical models. After a brief overview, a detailed account of the construction of the experimental apparatus is presented. Documentation of the data acquisition program is contained in the Appendix. The first experimental demonstration of the technique is then presented for I[sub 2][sup -] photodissociation, modeled using a simulation program which is also detailed in the Appendix. The investigation of I[sub 2][sup -] photodissociation in several size-selected I[sub 2][sup -](Ar)[sub n] (n= 6-20) and I[sub 2][sup -](CO[sub 2])[sub n] (n= 4-16) clusters forms the heart of the dissertation. In a series of chapters, the numerous effects of solvation on this fundamental bond-breaking reaction are explored, the most notable of which is the recombination of I[sub 2][sup -] on the ground[tilde X]([sup 2][Sigma][sub u][sup+]) state in sufficiently large clusters. Recombination and trapping of I[sub 2][sup -] on the excited[tilde A]([sup 2][Pi][sub 3/2,g]) state is also observed in both types of clusters. The studies have revealed electronic state transitions, the first step in recombination, on a[approx]500 fs to[approx]10 ps timescale. Accompanying the changes in electronic state is solvent reorganization, which occurs on a similar timescale. Over longer periods ([approx]1 ps to & gt;200 ps), energy is transferred from vibrationally excite d I[sub 2][sup -] to modes of the solvent, which in turn leads to solvent evaporation. These effects become more important as cluster size increases. In addition, differences in timescale and mechanism are observed between clusters of Ar, which binds to I[sup -] and I[sub 2][sup -] rather weakly, and CO[sub 2], whose large quadruple moment allows substantially stronger binding to these anions.
