Book Two step Laser Mass Spectrometric Investigations of Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Samples

Download or read book Two step Laser Mass Spectrometric Investigations of Terrestrial and Extraterrestrial Samples written by Amy Louise Morrow and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The studies detailed in this thesis center around the application of laser mass spectrometry to a variety of terrestrial and extraterrestrial samples and their polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contents. Though PAHs are ubiquitous in space, on Earth and, indeed, in our everyday lives, determination of characteristic PAH signatures in samples of interest can provide important clues to the mechanisms of asteroid interactions, answer questions about experimental contamination, and even help to decipher the riddles of extraterrestrial life. Specifically, this thesis describes the use of two-step laser desorption laser ionization mass spectrometry (L2MS) to: (i) determine that photochemical reactions are not a source of contaminating aromatics in NASA's Stardust mission; (ii) confirm that meteorites collected in the area of a witnessed near-Earth object (NEO) impact were indeed part of the parent asteroid; (iii) contribute to the on-going question of biotic or abiotic formation of carbonate/magnetite globules in mineralogical formations; and (iv) show that L2MS is a promising alternative to laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) for analytes prone to gas-phase aggregation.

Book Portable Spectroscopy and Spectrometry Applications

Download or read book Portable Spectroscopy and Spectrometry Applications written by Richard A. Crocombe and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-04-26 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most comprehensive resource available on the many applications of portable spectrometers, including material not found in any other published work Portable Spectroscopy and Spectrometry: Volume Two is an authoritative and up-to-date compendium of the diverse applications for portable spectrometers across numerous disciplines. Whereas Volume One focuses on the specific technologies of the portable spectrometers themselves, Volume Two explores the use of portable instruments in wide range of fields, including pharmaceutical development, clinical research, food analysis, forensic science, geology, astrobiology, cultural heritage and archaeology. Volume Two features contributions by a multidisciplinary team of experts with hands-on experience using portable instruments in their respective areas of expertise. Organized both by instrumentation type and by scientific or technical discipline, 21 detailed chapters cover various applications of portable ion mobility spectrometry (IMS), infrared and near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, Raman and x-ray fluorescence (XRF) spectroscopy, smartphone spectroscopy, and many others. Filling a significant gap in literature on the subject, the second volume of Portable Spectroscopy and Spectrometry: Features a significant amount of content published for the first time, or not available in existing literature Brings together work by authors with assorted backgrounds and fields of study Discusses the central role of applications in portable instrument development Covers the algorithms, calibrations, and libraries that are of critical importance to successful applications of portable instruments Includes chapters on portable spectroscopy applications in areas such as the military, agriculture and feed, hazardous materials (HazMat), art conservation, and environmental science Portable Spectroscopy and Spectrometry: Volume Two is an indispensable resource for developers of portable instruments in universities, research institutes, instrument companies, civilian and government purchasers, trainers, operators of portable instruments, and educators and students in portable spectroscopy courses.

Book excerpt: The Mars Science Laboratory is the latest and most advanced NASA roving vehicle to explore the surface of Mars. The Curiosity rover has landed in Gale crater and will explore this region assessing conditions on the surface that might be hospitable to life and paving the way for later even more sophisticated exploration of the surface. This book describes the mission, its exploration and scientific objectives, studies leading to the design of the mission and the instruments that accomplish the objectives of the mission. This book is aimed at all those engaged in Martian studies as well as those interested in the origin of life in other environments. It will be a valuable reference for anyone who uses data from the Mars Science Laboratory. Previously published in Space Science Reviews journal, Vol. 170/1-4, 2012.

Book Theory of Reflectance and Emittance Spectroscopy

Download or read book Theory of Reflectance and Emittance Spectroscopy written by Bruce Hapke and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-01-19 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reflectance and emittance spectroscopy are increasingly important tools in remote sensing and have been employed in most recent planetary spacecraft missions. They are primarily used to measure properties of disordered materials, especially in the interpretation of remote observations of the surfaces of the Earth and other terrestrial planets. This book gives a quantitative treatment of the physics of the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with particulate media, such as powders and soils. Subjects covered include electromagnetic wave propagation, single particle scattering, diffuse reflectance, thermal emittance and polarisation. This new edition has been updated to include a quantitative treatment of the effects of porosity, a detailed discussion of the coherent backscatter opposition effect, a quantitative treatment of simultaneous transport of energy within the medium by conduction and radiation, and lists of relevant databases and software. This is an essential reference for research scientists, engineers and advanced students of planetary remote sensing.

Book excerpt: Our knowledge of the origin, evolution, nature, and distribution of organic matter in space has undergone a revolution in recent years. Insights into various aspects of this material can be found using a variety of different technical approaches. These range from telescopic measurements by observational astronomers over a wide range of wavelengths, to laboratory experiments and simulations by chemists, physicists, and spectroscopists, and analyses of actual extraterrestrial materials. IAU Symposium 251 brought together expertise of scientists from different disciplines, including observational astronomers, laboratory spectroscopists, and solar system scientists, to provide a synthesis of our current understanding of these organics and to identify areas in which additional work and new ideas are required to further our understanding.
