Book Laser induced Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Liver Metastases

Download or read book Laser induced Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Liver Metastases written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 4 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser-induced thermotherapy is a non-surgical method for treating tumors in solid organs. The method is experimental and considered primarily in treating patients with liver metastases when surgery is not an option. 1. It is uncertain whether or not laser-induced thermotherapy extends life in patients with liver metastases. Comparative studies are lacking. Studies published to date show that this treatment method can ablate metastases, and that risks associated with the procedure are minor. However, the beneficial effects of metastases ablation, in terms of symptoms and quality of life, have not been demonstrated in the literature. 2. Use of the method should be limited to controlled trials. This implies, e.g., that patients must be informed about the different treatment options and the scientific evidence available at the time.

  • Release : 2019-09-28
  • ISBN : 3030217485
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Image guided Laser Ablation written by Claudio Maurizio Pacella and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-28 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive guide to the technical basis of laser ablation, describing and reporting in detail on the latest findings. The world of medicine is currently working to reduce the invasiveness of treatment, in order to improve patients’ quality of life. Image-guided ablations are rapidly becoming an effective alternative to several surgical treatments. Among the many techniques available for ablation, laser is still not widely used, though its efficacy has been amply demonstrated. The scientific community is now showing a growing interest in laser techniques for image-guided ablations, and many physicians are willing to start using lasers in their clinical practice. The book is divided into 16 chapters, including historical notes, technical aspects, outcomes of ex-vivo experiments, and results of the application of this technique in various clinical scenarios. It will be of great interest to a broad range of physicians (interventional radiologists, surgeons, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists, urologists), from less experienced trainees to expert physicians who want to introduce a novel clinical practice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an enormous sense of excitement in the communities of cancer research and cancer care as we move into the middle third of the ?rst decade of the 21st century. For the ?rst time, there is a true sense of c- ?dence that the tools provided by the human genome project will enable cancer researchers to crack the code of genomic abnormalities that allow tumor cells to live within the body and provide highly speci?c, virtually non-toxic therapies for the eradication,or at least ?rm control of human cancers. There is also good reason to hope that these same lines of inquiry will yield better tests for screening, early detection, and prev- tion of progression beyond curability. While these developments provide a legitimate basis for much op- mism, many patients will continue to develop cancers and suffer from their debilitating effects, even as research moves ahead. For these in- viduals, it is imperative that the cancer ?eld make the best possible use of the tools available to provide present day cancer patients with the best chances for cure, effective palliation, or, at the very least, relief from symptoms caused by acute intercurrent complications of cancer. A modality that has emerged as a very useful approach to at least some of these goals is tumor ablation by the use of physical or physiochemical approaches.

Book excerpt: In the last few years, the development of new technologies in the medical field has allowed procedures and improved surgical techniques to be performed, which until recently would have been unthinkable.Modern neurosurgery is forever tied to technological progress: the development of robotics and robotic-assisted surgery; enhanced visualization, perfusion, and function monitoring in vascular surgery; new techniques of bone reconstruction; new cerebral imaging tools; and alternative treatments such as laser interstitial thermal therapy or immunotherapy for tumors. This book is designed to be a comprehensive introduction to these new developments and to their application in clinical practice. We have tried to provide a unique background and insights to coherently present these new technologies.

Book MR Guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Treatment of Brain Tumors

Download or read book MR Guided Laser Interstitial Thermal Therapy for Treatment of Brain Tumors written by Michael E. Ivan and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minimally invasive technologies for intracranial lesions are a rapidly growing area of surgical neuro-oncology. Magnetic resonance (MR)-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is novel adjunctive therapy for patients who are poor candidates for open surgical resection. Recent developments in modern stereotaxy, fiber optics, and MR thermography imaging have improved the safety profile of LITT, enabling its emergence as an attractive alternative adjunct therapy for intracranial lesions which are deep-seated, refractory to standard therapies, or in patients with multiple comorbidities. In this chapter, we review the technological principles underlying LITT and provide a comprehensive, up-to-date summary of the evidence regarding the indications, outcomes, and limitations of LITT for a diverse array of intracranial tumors, including dural-based lesions, metastases, gliomas, and radiation necrosis.
