Book Laser induced Incandescence and Elastic scattering Measurements of Particulate matter Volume Fraction Changes During Passage Through a Dilution Tunnel

Download or read book Laser induced Incandescence and Elastic scattering Measurements of Particulate matter Volume Fraction Changes During Passage Through a Dilution Tunnel written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern diesel engines produce far less mass of particulate matter than their predecessors, but this advance has been achieved at the expense of a significant increase in the number of sub-micron sized particles. This change in soot morphology has created the need for new instrumentation capable of measuring small volumes and sizes of particulate matter in a reasonable period of time, and preferably in real-time. Laser-induced incandescence and laser elastic scattering are complementary techniques suitable for this task. Optical measurements are presented for a diesel engine exhaust and compared with measurements performed using a scanning mobility particle sizer. This study investigates the effects of exhaust dilution and temperature control of the sampling system. It is also shown that laser-induced vaporization of low temperature volatile material is a potentially valuable technique for measuring the volatile component of exhaust particulate matter.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because of the growing interest in hypersonic flows, the AGARD Fluid Dynamics Panel initiated a sub-working group on instrumentation for hypersonics in 1989. This sub-group, chaired by J. WENDT (VKI -Belgium), was composed of: A. BOUTIER (ONERA -France), K. BUTEFISCH (DLR -Germany), R. CATTOLICA (SANDIA Lab. -USA), V. CLINE (AEDC -USA), A. GIRARD (ONERA -France), R. McKENZIE (NASA Ames -USA), S. OCHELTREE (NASA Langley -USA) and G. SMEETS (ISL -Franco-German Inst.). As a result of several meetings, the idea came to organize this workshop, 27th April - 1st May 1992, on "New Trends in Instrumentation for Hypersonic Research", at Le Fauga-Mauzac ONERA center, in France, where the new hot-shot arc-heated facility F4, as well as a new conference building, were recently completed. This workshop has been organized in close connection with the AGARD FDP Symposium to be held in Torino 4 - 8 May 1992 on "Theoretical and Experimental Methods in Hypersonic Flows": the main conclusions and ideas expressed by the papers and during the discussions of this workshop are reported in session 7 and have been presented in Torino in a special Instrumentation session. As chairman of this workshop, I express many thanks to the Organizing Committee composed of Karl BUTEFISCH, Andre GIRARD, Stewart OCHELTREE and John WENDT for their very constructive help, leading to a meeting that was recognized to be very fruitful for all the participants.

Book Optical Metrology for Fluids Combustion and Solids

Download or read book Optical Metrology for Fluids Combustion and Solids written by Carolyn Mercer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Optical Metrology for Fluids, Combustion and Solids is the first practical handbook that presents the assemblage of the techniques necessary to provide a basic understanding of optical measurement for fluids, combustion, and solids. The use of light as a measurement tool has grown over the past twenty years from a narrowly specialized activity to a mainstay of modern research today. Until recently, the knowledge that could be extracted from the light interaction of light with physical objects was limited to specialized activities. The invention of the laser, the computer and microelectronics has enabled a measurement revolution such that virtually every parameter of engineering interest can be measured using the minimally intrusive properties of light. The authors of this book's chapters are leaders in this revolution. They work on the front lines of research in government, industry, and universities, inventing yet more ways to harness the power of light for the generation of knowledge.

Book Laser Induced Fluorescence Measurements of OMS and LR91 Amine Rocket Exhausts

Download or read book Laser Induced Fluorescence Measurements of OMS and LR91 Amine Rocket Exhausts written by C. Brasier and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonintrusive diagnostics are often sought to provide information on combustion exhaust flows due to the harsh environment of the flow. Laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) is one technique in which a chosen flow molecule or marker is probed to yield gross flow properties such as static temperature and flow velocities. The work presented herein describes application of LIF to the combustion exhausts of two full-scale liquid-propellant rocket engines, i.e., the Space Shuttle Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) and the Titan second-stage LR91 rocket engines, as they undergo routine testing in simulated altitude test cells. The method is based upon the use of CW ring-dye lasers which scan in frequency over either the Na D1 or D2 line at 5896 and 5890 L'. Na is used as a basis for this approach since it occurs as a trace element in both hydrogen and amine rocket fuels. The generic apparatus is described, including a discussion of the collection and interpretation of the LIF signal to yield radial and temporal profiles of radial flow velocity and static temperature. CFD modeling of the plumes was used to provide baseline estimates of the exhaust flow properties. It was found that the CFD model does a fairly good job of predicting the gross behavior of the flow, although some items of fine spatial structure are not reproduced well. The OMS and LR91 rocket engine nozzles are drastically different in construction and cooling method. It was found that excellent LIF results were obtained with the radiation-cooled nozzle (OMS), while the fuel-film cooling (FFC) used for the LR91 nozzle generated an optically thick and particle-laden region which severely impeded the determination of static temperature from the Na LIF measurements. Ancillary optical scattering measurements were made on the LR91 which indicated the existence of an annulus of particles in the flow periphery.

Book Laser Techniques for Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Laser Techniques for Fluid Mechanics written by R.J. Adrian and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume includes revised and extended versions of selected papers presented at the Tenth International Symposium on Applications of Laser Techniques to Fluid Mechanics held at the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon, during the period of July 10 to 13, 2000. The papers describe instrumentation developments for Velocity, Scalar and Multi-Phase Flows and results of measurements of Turbulent Flows, and Combustion and Engines. The papers demonstrate the continuing and healthy interest in the development of understanding of new methodologies and implementation in terms of new instrumentation. The prime objective of the Tenth Symposium was to provide a forum for the presentation of the most advanced research on laser techniques for flow measurements, and communicate significant results to fluid mechanics. The application of laser techniques to scientific and engineering fluid flow research was emphasized, but contributions to the theory and practice of laser methods were also considered where they facilitate new improved fluid mechanic research. Attention was placed on laser-Doppler anemometry, particle sizing and other methods for the measurement of velocity and scalars, such as particle image velocimetry and laser induced fluorescence.

Book Laser Induced Incandescence and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Based Sensor Development

Download or read book Laser Induced Incandescence and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy Based Sensor Development written by Kemal Efe Eseller and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this doctoral dissertation, two laser-based sensors were evaluated for different applications. Laser Induced Incandescence (LII) is a technique which can provide nonintrusive quantitative measurement of soot and it provides a unique diagnostic tool to characterize engine performance. Since LII is linearly proportional to the soot volume fraction, it can provide in situ, real time measurement of soot volume fraction with high temporal and spatial resolution. LII has the capability to characterize soot formation during combustion. The soot volume fraction from both flames and a soot generator was investigated with LII. The effects of experimental parameters, such as laser fluence, gate delay, gate width and various laser beam focusing, on LII signal was studied. Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), a diagnostic tool for in situ elemental analysis, has been evaluated for on-line, simultaneous, multi-species impurity monitoring in hydrogen. LIBS spectra with different impurity levels of nitrogen, argon, and oxygen were recorded and the intensity of the spectral lines of Ar, O, N, and H observed were used to form calibration plots for impurities in hydrogen measurements. An ungated detection method for LIBS has been developed and applied to equivalence ratio measurements of CH4/air and biofuel/air. LIBS has also been used to quantitatively analyze the composition of a slurry sample. The quenching effect of water in slurry samples causes low LIBS signal quality with poor sensitivity. Univariate and multivariate calibration was performed on LIBS spectra of dried slurry samples for elemental analysis of Mg, Si and Fe. Calibration results show that the dried slurry samples give good correlation between spectral intensity and elemental concentration.
