Book excerpt: Modern diesel engines produce far less mass of particulate matter than their predecessors, but this advance has been achieved at the expense of a significant increase in the number of sub-micron sized particles. This change in soot morphology has created the need for new instrumentation capable of measuring small volumes and sizes of particulate matter in a reasonable period of time, and preferably in real-time. Laser-induced incandescence and laser elastic scattering are complementary techniques suitable for this task. Optical measurements are presented for a diesel engine exhaust and compared with measurements performed using a scanning mobility particle sizer. This study investigates the effects of exhaust dilution and temperature control of the sampling system. It is also shown that laser-induced vaporization of low temperature volatile material is a potentially valuable technique for measuring the volatile component of exhaust particulate matter.

Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Laser-induced incandescence is a technique that uses a pulsed laser beam to heat soot particles up to levels far above the background, causing them to emit radiation as essentially blackbodies, which can then be related to the total soot volume using suitable calibration schemes. However, the temperature reached by the laser-heated particles may cause the particles to begin to vaporize, thereby changing the parameter of interest, namely the total soot volume. The primary goal of this thesis is to investigate the particle vaporization due to LII using time-resolved laser light scattering. Based on the experimental measurements in a sooting propane diffusion flame, significant particle vaporization was found to occur on the time scale of the LII laser pulse. A model was developed to describe the particle temperature and volume as the particles are heated up and vaporized by the LII laser and as the particles subsequently cooled. This heat transfer model uses a fundamental energy balance along with the Planck distribution to model the LII signal as a function of time, and was then used to estimate the influence of particle vaporization on the time-resolved LII signal.

Book excerpt: The ability to accurately measure solid particulate levels in various applications ranging from engines to laboratory flames has become very important in the past few decades. A new approach to measuring soot levels called laser-induced incandescence was investigated. An apparatus was designed and built in order to measure soot levels in an atmospheric laminar diffusion flame with the intent of conducting proof-of-concept measurements. The apparatus utilized highly focussed optics while collecting time-resolved data using fast PMTs which allowed measurement of both time and spatial domains. Although noise and other technical problems proved to be a concern, measurements with reasonable agreement with published results for temperature (2800 K) and the primary particle soot size (6.3 +/- 2.5 nm) were achieved within the flame. Noise issues with the apparatus prevented accurate soot volume fraction measurements from being obtained. Numerous suggestions have been made as to how to improve the experiment for future use, potentially in a high pressure environment.

Book excerpt: Static light scattering (SLS) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) techniques are used to measure characteristics of particles in dispersion. SLS measures the dependence of the average scattered intensity I, on the scattering angle and is sensitive to spatial variations in the dielectric constant E. DLS measures the time dependence of the scattered light. One fundamental application of light scattering techniques is the accurate measurement of the size distribution of particles in dispersion. Detailed experimental investigation of SLS and DLS has been attempted in this work, with experimental work based on dilute water dispersions of two different spherical particles, polystyrene latexes and poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) microgels. Size information is obtained from SLS measurements in the form of a particle size distribution G (R,) where R, is the static radius. Size information is obtained from DLS measurements in the form of a decay rate distribution G (I?) which depends on the decay rate I?. Although both SLS and DLS can be used to obtain size information from the scattered light, the information obtained using SLS and DLS is different. For the three polystyrene latex sphere samples studied in this thesis, the mean static radii obtained are consistent with that of the mean radii provided by the supplier. For all three samples, the apparent hydrodynamic radius is larger than the mean static radius by about 12%. For PNIPAM microgel spheres, the apparent hydrodynamic radius is also larger than the mean static radius. The size of the PNIPAM microgel particles is extremely temperature sensitive; the radius decreases by a factor of three as the temperature is raised from 15OC to 50?? Both the hydrodynamic and static radii show this behavior. The effect of the chemical crosslinker (N, N'-methylenebisacrylamide) content on the temperature sensitivity of the PNIPAM microgels and the temperature dependence of the ratio of the apparent hydrodynamic radius to the mean static radius are also discussed.

The present volume on Automotive Exhaust Emissions and Energy Recovery for both gasoline and diesel engines is therefore both timely and appropriate. Whereas diesel engines have been predominantly turbocharged, only a relatively small percentage of gasoline engines are similarly equipped, which has led to significant efforts by engine manufacturers in recent years to downsize and down-speed these engines. On the other hand, the relative focus in diesel engine development in terms of emissions and exhaust energy recovery has shifted toward devices other than the turbocharger for enhanced energy recovery and emissions control technologies in order to allow the diesel engines of the future to keep up with the dual-demand for very low emissions and increasing levels of fuel economy. The book focuses on the exhaust system and the technologies and methods used to reduce emissions and increase fuel economy by capitalising on the exhaust gas energy availability (either in the form of gas kinetic energy or as waste heat extracted from the exhaust gas).
