Book Laser Induced Fluorescence and Ionization Techniques for Combustion Diagnostics

Download or read book Laser Induced Fluorescence and Ionization Techniques for Combustion Diagnostics written by BE. Forch and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Light atomic species such as oxygen atoms (O) and hydrogen atoms (H) are fundamentally important in a wide variety of combustion-related phenomena such as flame ignition, propagation, extinction and in chemical flame reactions. Furthermore, they are difficult to detect by conventional laser based optical methods (laser induced fluorescence) in combustion environments because the necessary resonance excitation wavelengths fall far into the vacuum ultraviolet (vuv) and the requisite tunable laser sources are not generally available. However, recent developments in nonlinear spectroscopic techniques such as multiphoton induced emission (MPE) and multiphoton ionization (MPI) have made direct detection of these light atoms possible. We have utilized a number of laser multiphoton excitation schemes for their detection using tunable lasers in the 190 to 400 nm range. Similar diagnostic techniques were attempted for the detection of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) atoms in flames. The effects of laser induced photochemical pertubations on species detection in flames were also investigated. These nonlinear spectroscopic techniques have been demonstrated to be very useful in combustion studies but special care needs to be taken with respect to possible perturbations that may result from the use of short-wavelength lasers.

Book Nonlinear Laser Diagnostics for Combustion and Plasma Processes

Download or read book Nonlinear Laser Diagnostics for Combustion and Plasma Processes written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Significant milestones for quantitative laser-based diagnostics of reacting flows were reached on two separate tasks: (1) the extension of laser-based diagnostics to shorter vacuum ultraviolet (vuv) wavelengths and (2) the development of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) diagnostics for light atoms. For the first task, phase-matching was applied to produce significant increases in vuv laser intensities, producing over 5 mu J at Lyman alpha (121.6 nm) in a mixture of krypton and argon. Factors affecting the long-term stability of vuv powers were studied. The diagnostic potential of two-photon excited ASE of atomic hydrogen and oxygen was explored in a variety of low-pressure flames. Direct ASE gain measurements gave oxygen concentrations. A model of the ASE signal was developed, and a new understanding of both ASE and laser-induced fluorescence of two-photon excited atoms emerged from this model.

Book A Study of Laser induced Fluorescence Back scattered Amplified Stimulated Emission of Bulk Vapors

Download or read book A Study of Laser induced Fluorescence Back scattered Amplified Stimulated Emission of Bulk Vapors written by Jeffrey B. Oleske and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method for the stand-off detection of vapors based on the observation of laser-induced fluorescence back-scattered amplified stimulated emission (LIF-BASE) is described. LIF-BASE generates uniaxial intensity distributions of the observed fluorescence with the majority of intensity propagating along the excitation axis in both the forward and backward directions. The detection of bulk vapor at significant stand-off distances is readily achieved. Molecules of differing vapor pressures, quantum yields of fluorescence, and fluorescence lifetimes were examined under adjustable experimental conditions. Excitation energy, laser fluence, analyte concentration, detection angle, and stand-off distance were among the factors studied in order to determine optimal parameters for ASE generation from aromatic hydrocarbon, ketone, nitrogen oxide, and nitroaromatic vapors.

Book Detection of Excited States by Laser Induced Fluorescence

Download or read book Detection of Excited States by Laser Induced Fluorescence written by H. Tischer and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser absorption techniques have been developed for the measurement of densities of H2 (C 3 Pi sub u) metastable densities in H2 electrical discharges. Using this technique and a modulated discharge we have found that the metastable density is proportional to discharge current density for current densities up to 10 A/sq cm. By using a pulsed laser to destroy th metastables we have obtained preliminary measurements of the metastable lifetime as a function of H2 density. Keywords: hydrogen, electrons, radiation, excitation coefficient, fluorescence, excited states.
