Book Laser induced Back ablation of Aluminum Thin Films Using Picosecond Laser Pulses

Download or read book Laser induced Back ablation of Aluminum Thin Films Using Picosecond Laser Pulses written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experiments were performed to understand laser-induced back-ablation of Al film targets with picosecond laser pulses. Al films deposited on the back surface of BK-7 substrates are ablated by picosecond laser pulses propagating into the Al film through the substrate. The ablated Al plume is transversely probed by a time-delayed, two-color sub-picoseond (500 fs) pulse, and this probe is then used to produce self-referencing interferograms and shadowgraphs of the Al plume in flight. Optical emission from the Al target due to LIBA is directed into a time-integrated grating spectrometer, and a time-integrating CCD camera records images of the Al plume emission. Ablated Al plumes are also redeposited on to receiving substrates. A post-experimental study of the Al target and recollected deposit characteristics was also done using optical microscopy, interferometry, and profilometry. In this high laser intensity regime, laser-induced substrate ionization and damage strongly limits transmitted laser fluence through the substrate above a threshold fluence. The threshold fluence for this ionization-based transmission limit in the substrate is dependent on the duration of the incident pulse. The substrate ionization can be used as a dynamic control of both transmitted spatial pulse profile and ablated Al plume shape. The efficiency of laser energy transfer between the laser pulse incident on the Al film and the ablated Al plume is estimated to be of order 5% and is a weak function of laser pulsewidth. The Al plume is highly directed. Low plume divergence ([theta]{sub divergence}

Book Sub picosecond Laser Deposition of Thin Films

Download or read book Sub picosecond Laser Deposition of Thin Films written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1999 Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognized the importance and growing maturity of the femtosecond time-scale in science and engineering. Understanding the interaction between materials and high energy density light to manufacture and process materials has become a key issue in both programmatic and fundamental research at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. We have emphasized in this research the aspects related to producing thin films by ablation of material with intense ultra-short laser pulses. Our effort during FY2000 has been focused on building the foundation of this research using high purity graphite as the initial ablation material. We have deposited diamond-like carbon (DLC) in vacuum, measured ablation rates, and characterized the physical and chemical properties of the films. We successfully completed our first objective to compare the microstructure and materials properties of the films deposited using lasers operated in the femtosecond and nanosecond pulse length regime. The mechanical characterization of the deposits showed improved film-substrate adhesion properties that allowed us to build 200-[mu]m thick layers using 150 fs pulses. Films produced with ns-pulses delaminated as soon as the thickness reached only a couple of microns. The stresses in the films were greatly influenced by the fluence and the duration of the laser pulses. The microstructure and surface morphology of the films did not vary significantly with the processing parameters studied (pulse length and fluence). Finally, we demonstrated that it is possible to significantly increase the deposition rate with shorter pulses at a given fluence. In particular, carbon could be deposited at a rate of 25 [mu]m/hour with this technology. Our goal in FY2001 is to study and model the relationship between the ablation plume characteristics (energy, charge, mass, and momentum) and the film growth behavior in order to influence and optimize the deposition process. We also want to determine if the laser parameters influence the stoichiometry of the deposits when compounds or alloys are used as ablation targets. We plan to investigate materials such as TiC, SiC, AlN, and polymers for the study.

Book Characterization of Femtosecond Laser Ablation and Deposition

Download or read book Characterization of Femtosecond Laser Ablation and Deposition written by Sudipta Bera and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2010-05 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A novel femtosecond micromachining workstation that permits real-time measurement of ablation depth and transient reflectivity is demonstrated. This instrumentation is used to characterize two processes: micromachining of thin metal films, and laser induced forward transfer (LIFT). Spectral interferometry was incorporated in a femtosecond micromachining system to enable real-time visualization of micromachined features as they are written into thin metal films-low energy(pJ) femtosecond oscillator pulses are used to probe the sample as it is cut by high energy (uJ) pulses. Sub-wavelength depths are readily resolved using this technique, making it possible to monitor the integrity of micromachined structures as they are created. This technique can also be employed to characterize interesting processes such as laser induced forward transfer (LIFT) of thin metal films. LIFT essentially involves using a pulsed laser to pattern a structure by deposition as opposed to ablation. Using modest numerical apertures (0.65 or less) we have been able to produce submicron features using this method of femtosecond pulsed laser deposition.
