Book Laser Ignition of Standard and Modified 155 mm Howitzer Charges

Download or read book Laser Ignition of Standard and Modified 155 mm Howitzer Charges written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser ignition experiments have been performed using the M198 towed howitzer as the test bed. The first component was to evaluate the performance of two modified M3A1 bag charges, each of which had the standard igniter pad replaced with a propellant-filled tube designed to pressurize rapidly and generate sufficient gas and pressure for prompt ignition. These experiments were successful but not remarkable, with ignition times faster than the average for clean-burning igniter (CBI) pad ignition. Along with these rounds, standard rounds were fired to gain more experience with laser ignition of the M198 in preparation for interfacing a digital fire control computer with the laser ignition system. All these experiments were done with a pulsed neo-dymium: ytterbium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser similar to the one developed for the XM297 connon. In the third part of the program, a continuous semiconductor diode laser was used to ignite five Zone 3 modular artillery cannon system (MACS) charges. Delay times from 355 to 733 ms were recorded. No degradation of the laser was noted from shock/vibration effects.

Book Laser Ignition of Energetic Materials

Download or read book Laser Ignition of Energetic Materials written by S Rafi Ahmad and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction to energetic materials and lasers, properties of such materials and the current methods for initiating energetic materials. The following chapters and sections highlight the properties of lasers, and safety aspects of their application. It covers the properties of in-service energetic materials, and also materials with prospects of being used as insensitive ammunitions in future weapon or missiles systems or as detonators in civilian (mining) applications. Because of the diversity of the topics some sections will naturally separate into different levels of expertise and knowledge.

Book Laser Ignition in a Medium Caliber Gun A Study of Igniter Influence on Action Time

Download or read book Laser Ignition in a Medium Caliber Gun A Study of Igniter Influence on Action Time written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory experiments and 30-mm-caliber gun tests have been pursued in order to explore the action time of the M230 gun using laser ignition. The laboratory tests explored the response of black powder (BP) to energy levels from 0.2 to 0.5 J. Tests with class 5 and class 7 BP show that response will probably not be fast enough to use BP as the primary initiator for this gun unless more laser energy is available. The limitation is in the time required for initial laser ignition of the BP. In the gun tests, pyrotechnic materials were also used and showed excellent response times well under the 4-ms requirement. Those tested include perchlorates and would not be acceptable for gun use. Several possible cartridge igniter configurations were tested. Low-cost windows were successfully demonstrated.

Book Field Artillery Manual Cannon Gunnery

Download or read book Field Artillery Manual Cannon Gunnery written by Department of the Army and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-19 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training Circular (TC) 3-09.81, "Field Artillery Manual Cannon Gunnery," sets forth the doctrine pertaining to the employment of artillery fires. It explains all aspects of the manual cannon gunnery problem and presents a practical application of the science of ballistics. It includes step-by-step instructions for manually solving the gunnery problem which can be applied within the framework of decisive action or unified land operations. It is applicable to any Army personnel at the battalion or battery responsible to delivered field artillery fires. The principal audience for ATP 3-09.42 is all members of the Profession of Arms. This includes field artillery Soldiers and combined arms chain of command field and company grade officers, middle-grade and senior noncommissioned officers (NCO), and battalion and squadron command groups and staffs. This manual also provides guidance for division and corps leaders and staffs in training for and employment of the BCT in decisive action. This publication may also be used by other Army organizations to assist in their planning for support of battalions. This manual builds on the collective knowledge and experience gained through recent operations, numerous exercises, and the deliberate process of informed reasoning. It is rooted in time-tested principles and fundamentals, while accommodating new technologies and diverse threats to national security.

Book Potential for Excessive Ignition Delay and Hangfire of M203E1 Propelling Charge

Download or read book Potential for Excessive Ignition Delay and Hangfire of M203E1 Propelling Charge written by George R. Younger and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This engineering study was initiated to determine the cause of excessive ignition delay and hangfire potential for the 155 mm howitzer's M203E1 propelling charge, which produced two hangfires during cold temperature testing. The primer, black powder, fabric, environment, and aging of the charge were studied as possible contributors to a hangfire. (Author).

Book Experimental Study of Flamespreading Processes in 155 mm XM216 Modular Propelling Charges

Download or read book Experimental Study of Flamespreading Processes in 155 mm XM216 Modular Propelling Charges written by Carl R. Ruth and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 155-mm, XM216 is a modular, combustible-cased, stick-propellant charge developed by the Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center and recently type classified to provide the Zones 2-4 range coverage for the M198 howitzer should another advanced propulsion option not be fielded. The propellant granulation and casing characteristics of the charge are unlike those of multiple-increment charges that have been fielded previously by the US Army. Past investigations of single-increment, combustible-cased, stick-propellant configurations which produced ballistic anomalies have indicated a substantial influence of particular igniter and charge attributes on ignition and flamespread, and by extrapolation, on the overall interior ballistic cycle. The charge developer, in order to assure that similar problems did not arise with the XM216, requested a characterization of the early, ignition and flamespread processes of the nearly final configuration charge. Testing to provide such data was accomplished in BRL's 155-mm howitzer simulator. Firings were conducted for all zones at ambient and temperature extremes to characterize ignition transfer, flamespread, propellant-bed mobility, and pressure-wave development during the early portion of the interior ballistic cycle. From these and similar earlier tests, conclusions are drawn regarding the influence of initial charge temperature, ullage, propellant granulation, and charge casing on flamespread processes and the remainder of the ballistic cycle. Keywords: Propelling charges; Pressure waves; Modular charges; Stick propellant. (edc).
