Download or read book Laser Ignition of Energetic Materials written by S Rafi Ahmad and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction to energetic materials and lasers, properties of such materials and the current methods for initiating energetic materials. The following chapters and sections highlight the properties of lasers, and safety aspects of their application. It covers the properties of in-service energetic materials, and also materials with prospects of being used as insensitive ammunitions in future weapon or missiles systems or as detonators in civilian (mining) applications. Because of the diversity of the topics some sections will naturally separate into different levels of expertise and knowledge.

Book Laser Ignition Testing of Two Piece Tank Ammunition for Advanced Tank Cannon System ATACS

Download or read book Laser Ignition Testing of Two Piece Tank Ammunition for Advanced Tank Cannon System ATACS written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, new results on the development of a laser-based ignition system for ATACS will be presented. Full scale testing of a multipoint ignition system in a large caliber gun ballistics simulator are in progress. A Nd:Glass laser is used to initiate a vented igniter tube containing blackpowder at multiple locations and a booster charge of blackpowder at the interface. The results of pressure-time data and high-speed photography show that both ammunition components ignite within a time delay of less than 1 ms and that flamespread was uniform throughout the propellant bed. Blackpowder classifications, the number of ignition points and locations, and laser parameters such as energy and pulse duration will be varied to optimize performance of the system. The experimental results from parametric investigations of the direct laser-based ignition of the propellant (JA2) will also be presented. Quantitative measurement of the relationships between laser energy, laser pulse duration, and percent surface irradiation on ignition delay and ignition threshold have been made. The effect of molecular oxygen concentration on ignition threshold in solid propellant initiation has also been determined.

Book Laser Ignition in a Medium Caliber Gun A Study of Igniter Influence on Action Time

Download or read book Laser Ignition in a Medium Caliber Gun A Study of Igniter Influence on Action Time written by Richard Beyer and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory experiments and 30-mm-caliber gun tests have been pursued in order to explore the action time of the M230 gun using laser ignition. The laboratory tests explored the response of black powder (BP) to energy levels from 0.2 to 0.5 J. Tests with class 5 and class 7 BP show that response will probably not be fast enough to use BP as the primary initiator for this gun unless more laser energy is available. The limitation is in the time required for initial laser ignition of the BP. In the gun tests, pyrotechnic materials were also used and showed excellent response times well under the 4-ms requirement. Those tested include perchlorates and would not be acceptable for gun use. Several possible cartridge igniter configurations were tested. Low-cost windows were successfully demonstrated.

Book Laser Ignition of Standard and Modified 155 mm Howitzer Charges

Download or read book Laser Ignition of Standard and Modified 155 mm Howitzer Charges written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser ignition experiments have been performed using the M198 towed howitzer as the test bed. The first component was to evaluate the performance of two modified M3A1 bag charges, each of which had the standard igniter pad replaced with a propellant-filled tube designed to pressurize rapidly and generate sufficient gas and pressure for prompt ignition. These experiments were successful but not remarkable, with ignition times faster than the average for clean-burning igniter (CBI) pad ignition. Along with these rounds, standard rounds were fired to gain more experience with laser ignition of the M198 in preparation for interfacing a digital fire control computer with the laser ignition system. All these experiments were done with a pulsed neo-dymium: ytterbium aluminum garnet (Nd:YAG) laser similar to the one developed for the XM297 connon. In the third part of the program, a continuous semiconductor diode laser was used to ignite five Zone 3 modular artillery cannon system (MACS) charges. Delay times from 355 to 733 ms were recorded. No degradation of the laser was noted from shock/vibration effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Training Circular (TC) 3-09.81, "Field Artillery Manual Cannon Gunnery," sets forth the doctrine pertaining to the employment of artillery fires. It explains all aspects of the manual cannon gunnery problem and presents a practical application of the science of ballistics. It includes step-by-step instructions for manually solving the gunnery problem which can be applied within the framework of decisive action or unified land operations. It is applicable to any Army personnel at the battalion or battery responsible to delivered field artillery fires. The principal audience for ATP 3-09.42 is all members of the Profession of Arms. This includes field artillery Soldiers and combined arms chain of command field and company grade officers, middle-grade and senior noncommissioned officers (NCO), and battalion and squadron command groups and staffs. This manual also provides guidance for division and corps leaders and staffs in training for and employment of the BCT in decisive action. This publication may also be used by other Army organizations to assist in their planning for support of battalions. This manual builds on the collective knowledge and experience gained through recent operations, numerous exercises, and the deliberate process of informed reasoning. It is rooted in time-tested principles and fundamentals, while accommodating new technologies and diverse threats to national security.

Book Hydrodynamic Breech Window Design Concept for Laser Ignition of Large Caliber Guns

Download or read book Hydrodynamic Breech Window Design Concept for Laser Ignition of Large Caliber Guns written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser ignition is becoming a viable method of igniting a propellant bed (especially for large-caliber guns). However, problems still are present at the optical interface of the laser and the round to be fired. The most obvious problem to the casual observer is the deposits left on the window from the ignition of the igniter material and propellant. If the window is obscured (by an opaque coating or by opaque particles), ignition of subsequent rounds may not be possible. Therefore, a method of keeping the window clean for an extended number of firings is needed. Instead of physically wiping the window after each firing, this study examined the use of hydrodynamic flow of the igniter gases to keep the obscuring particles and hot gases from making contact with the window. Initial experiments used visualization by water jets to validate theoretical predictions for deflecting the particle-laden fluid flow. Improvements to the basic design included a cyclonic chamber in the window region to remove particles. Predictions indicated that the maximum pressure in the cyclonic chamber would be about 75% of the maximum breech pressure. Designs were tested in both subscale (76-ram I.D.) and full-scale (155-ram I.D.) simulators made of optically clear polymer resins. Several of these designs dramatically reduced the amount of particles that reached the window area.
