Book A Study of Laser Ignition for Hybrid Propulsion Systems

Download or read book A Study of Laser Ignition for Hybrid Propulsion Systems written by David Michael Dyrda and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hybrid propulsion systems have historically been precluded from finding application due to the extensive development and heritage of liquid and solid alternatives. However, an emerging market for small-satellites and a corresponding need for high performance micro-propulsion systems presents a unique opportunity for the development of small-scale hybrids capable of providing advanced maneuverability to these spacecraft both in Earth orbit and for interplanetary exploration. To that end, this thesis focuses on the development of a novel laser ignition system for these motors that can perform numerous motor restarts while minimizing system mass and volume. This research has pursued two primary goals. The first is in the development and verification of a theory that describes the laser-driven ignition process. This verification has been accomplished through high-speed imaging of the ignition process within an optically accessible combustion chamber. The second goal has involved the demonstration of this laser igniter as a restart-capable device, initially using a laboratory-scale hybrid motor and later with a flight-like hybrid motor in a vacuum chamber. Experimental investigations in the optically accessible combustion chamber resulted in the first images showing laser ignition of hybrid propellants. Restart ignition tests in representative hybrid motor geometries demonstrated the reliability of this technique.

Download or read book Laser Ignition of Energetic Materials written by S Rafi Ahmad and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book gives an introduction to energetic materials and lasers, properties of such materials and the current methods for initiating energetic materials. The following chapters and sections highlight the properties of lasers, and safety aspects of their application. It covers the properties of in-service energetic materials, and also materials with prospects of being used as insensitive ammunitions in future weapon or missiles systems or as detonators in civilian (mining) applications. Because of the diversity of the topics some sections will naturally separate into different levels of expertise and knowledge.

Book Laser Ignition For Combustion Engines

Download or read book Laser Ignition For Combustion Engines written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of lasers in the 1960s, researcher and engineers discovered a new and powerful tool to investigate natural phenomena and improve technologically critical processes. Nowadays, applications of different lasers span quite broadly from diagnostics tools in science and engineering to biological and medical uses. In this article basic principles and applications of lasers for ignition of fuels are concisely reviewed from the engineering perspective. The objective is to present the current state of the relevant knowledge on fuel ignition and discuss select applications, advantages and disadvantages, in the context of combustion engines. Fundamentally, there are four different ways in which laser light can interact with a combustible mixture to initiate an ignition event. They are referred to as thermal initiation, nonresonant breakdown, resonant breakdown, and photochemical ignition. By far the most commonly used technique is the nonresonant initiation of combustion primarily because of its freedom in selecting the laser wavelength and ease of implementation. Recent progress in the area of high power fiber optics allowed convenient shielding and transmission of the laser light to the combustion chamber. However, issues related to immediate interfacing between the light and the chamber such as selection of appropriate window material and its possible fouling during the operation, shaping of the laser focus volume, and selection of spatially optimum ignition point remain amongst the important engineering design challenges. One of the potential advantages of the lasers lies in its flexibility to change the ignition location. Also, multiple ignition points can be achieved rather comfortably as compared to conventional electric ignition systems using spark plugs.

Book Laser Induced Spark Ignition of Methane Oxygen Mixtures

Download or read book Laser Induced Spark Ignition of Methane Oxygen Mixtures written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-31 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results from an experimental study of laser induced spark ignition of methane-oxygen mixtures are presented. The experiments were conducted at atmospheric pressure and 296 K under laminar pre-mixed and turbulent-incompletely mixed conditions. A pulsed, frequency doubled Nd: YAG laser was used as the ignition source. Laser sparks with energies of 10 mJ and 40 mJ were used, as well as a conventional electrode spark with an effective energy of 6 mJ. Measurements were made of the flame kernel radius as a function of time using pulsed laser shadowgraphy. The initial size of the spark ignited flame kernel was found to correlate reasonably well with breakdown energy as predicted by the Taylor spherical blast wave model. The subsequent growth rate of the flame kernel was found to increase with time from a value less than to a value greater than the adiabatic, unstretched laminar growth rate. This behavior was attributed to the combined effects of flame stretch and an apparent wrinkling of the flame surface due to the extremely rapid acceleration of the flame. The very large laminar flame speed of methane-oxygen mixtures appears to be the dominant factor affecting the growth rate of spark ignited flame kernels, with the mode of ignition having a small effect. The effect of incomplete fuel-oxidizer mixing was found to have a significant effect on the growth rate, one which was greater than could simply be accounted for by the effect of local variations in the equivalence ratio on the local flame speed. Book excerpt: The Republic of Korea's industrial policy has directed that nation's economy through nearly three decades of spectacular growth. But the authors of this paper maintain that this policy is showing signs of being outmoded. The time has come, the authors argue, for the Korean government to stop managing the economy's structural development and to redefine the responsibilities of business and government. Under this proposed compact, the allocation of resources would shift from the government to the private industrial and financial sectors. The transformation of the government bureaucracy from an ad hoc policy role to one of a transparent and predictable regulator is a key to the success of this undertaking. These new directions would present the government with enormous challenges. Greater competitive discipline and regulatory oversight would be required. While dealing with the complexities of the transition, the government would have to maintain macroeconomic stability and the momentum of savings and investment. For comparison, the study examines the industrial economies of France, Germany, Japan, and the United States, which underwent similar shifts.

Book Laser Ignition in a Medium Caliber Gun A Study of Igniter Influence on Action Time

Download or read book Laser Ignition in a Medium Caliber Gun A Study of Igniter Influence on Action Time written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laboratory experiments and 30-mm-caliber gun tests have been pursued in order to explore the action time of the M230 gun using laser ignition. The laboratory tests explored the response of black powder (BP) to energy levels from 0.2 to 0.5 J. Tests with class 5 and class 7 BP show that response will probably not be fast enough to use BP as the primary initiator for this gun unless more laser energy is available. The limitation is in the time required for initial laser ignition of the BP. In the gun tests, pyrotechnic materials were also used and showed excellent response times well under the 4-ms requirement. Those tested include perchlorates and would not be acceptable for gun use. Several possible cartridge igniter configurations were tested. Low-cost windows were successfully demonstrated.
