Book Laser Driven Atom Coherence Effects with Vacuum Mediated Coherence

Download or read book Laser Driven Atom Coherence Effects with Vacuum Mediated Coherence written by Hebrew Benhur Crispin and published by Mohammed Abdul Sattar. This book was released on 2024-02-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early twentieth century witnessed fundamental changes in our understanding about the nature of light and matter. This was primarily due to the inadequacy of classical physics in explaining certain physical phenomena, such as the blackbody radiation and the photoelectric effect. A major conceptual breakthrough came first in the year 1900 with Planck's hypothesis of energy quanta to account for the blackbody spectrum. The idea of the quantization of energy was then applied to radiation by Einstein in his investigation of the photoelectric effect. He considered light to be discrete, localized wave packets called "light quanta" or "photons". Several experiments that followed gave evidence to the wave-particle duality of the radiation field and matter, which culminated in the formulation of quantum mechanics. Since its inception, the field has seen tremendous progress with applications from lasers, transistors, light emitting diodes, magnetic resonance imaging to quantum computing. The invention of laser was certainly an extraordinary achievement. It revolutionized the industry and enabled access to new physical regimes of atom-light interaction. Around the same period, the optical experiments of Hanbury Brown and Twiss revealed unexpected photon correlations, demonstrating the need for quantum mechanical methods to describe the statistics of light. The availability of tunable lasers later opened up the exciting field of quantum optics. Since then many intriguing and fascinating phenomena have been predicted and observed experimentally such as squeezed states of light, photon antibunching, entanglement, trapping of atoms, optical frequency comb and quantum computation

Book Coherence and Quantum Optics VIII

Download or read book Coherence and Quantum Optics VIII written by N.P. Bigelow and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 699 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eighth Rochester Conference on Coherence and Quantum Optics was held on the campus of the University of Rochester during the period June 13-16,2001. This volume contains the proceedings of the meeting. The meeting was preceded by an affiliated conference, the International Conference on Quantum Information, with some overlapping sessions on June 13. The proceedings of the affiliated conference will be published separately by the Optical Society of America. A few papers that were presented in common plenary sessions of the two conferences will be published in both proceedings volumes. More than 268 scientists from 28 countries participated in the week long discussions and presentations. This Conference differed from the previous seven in the CQO series in several ways, the most important of which was the absence of Leonard Mandel. Professor Mandel died a few months before the conference. A special memorial symposium in his honor was held at the end of the conference. The presentations from that symposium are included in this proceedings volume. An innovation, that we believe made an important contribution to the conference, was the inclusion of a series of invited lectures chaired by CQO founder Emil Wolf, reviewing the history of the fields of coherence and quantum optics before about 1970. These were given by three prominent participants in the development of the field, C. Cohen-Tannoudji, 1. F. Clauser, and R. I. Glauber.

Book Coherent Cooperative Phenomena

Download or read book Coherent Cooperative Phenomena written by N. G. Basov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology is devoted to the theoretical and experimental study of coherent phenom ena in quantum optics. Considerable attention is devoted to the investigation of cooperative effects in multilevel molecular and atomic systems. The theoretical analysis is based on a single approach, using the theory of groups, which makes it possible to present the results in a compact and physically elegant form. The results of a detailed experimental and theoretical investigation of the photon echo, self-induced transparency, and nutation are presented. The theory of a coherent resonant mechanism for the interaction of laser radiation with multi atomic molecules which causes "prompt" dissociation is presented. A number of applied pos sibilities, in particular, the control of radiation by laser light and laser isotope separation, are analyzed. v CONTENTS Coherent Physics and Its Applications. • . . • • . . • . . . . . . . . . . • • • • . . . • . . . . 1 L. Book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers

Download or read book Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laser has revolutionized many areas of science and society, providing bright and versatile light sources that transform the ways we investigate science and enables trillions of dollars of commerce. Now a second laser revolution is underway with pulsed petawatt-class lasers (1 petawatt: 1 million billion watts) that deliver nearly 100 times the total world's power concentrated into a pulse that lasts less than one-trillionth of a second. Such light sources create unique, extreme laboratory conditions that can accelerate and collide intense beams of elementary particles, drive nuclear reactions, heat matter to conditions found in stars, or even create matter out of the empty vacuum. These powerful lasers came largely from U.S. engineering, and the science and technology opportunities they enable were discussed in several previous National Academies' reports. Based on these advances, the principal research funding agencies in Europe and Asia began in the last decade to invest heavily in new facilities that will employ these high-intensity lasers for fundamental and applied science. No similar programs exist in the United States. Opportunities in Intense Ultrafast Lasers assesses the opportunities and recommends a path forward for possible U.S. investments in this area of science.

Book Near Field Mediated Photon Electron Interactions

Download or read book Near Field Mediated Photon Electron Interactions written by Nahid Talebi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-16 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the use of novel electron microscopy techniques to further our understanding of the physics behind electron–light interactions. It introduces and discusses the methodologies for advancing the field of electron microscopy towards a better control of electron dynamics with significantly improved temporal resolutions, and explores the burgeoning field of nanooptics – the physics of light–matter interaction at the nanoscale – whose practical applications transcend numerous fields such as energy conversion, control of chemical reactions, optically induced phase transitions, quantum cryptography, and data processing. In addition to describing analytical and numerical techniques for exploring the theoretical basis of electron–light interactions, the book showcases a number of relevant case studies, such as optical modes in gold tapers probed by electron beams and investigations of optical excitations in the topological insulator Bi2Se3. The experiments featured provide an impetus to develop more relevant theoretical models, benchmark current approximations, and even more characterization tools based on coherent electron–light interactions.

Book Frontiers of Laser Physics and Quantum Optics

Download or read book Frontiers of Laser Physics and Quantum Optics written by Zhizhan Xu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-01-15 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the advent of the laser about 40 years ago, the field of laser physics and quantum optics have evolved into a major discipline. The early studies included the optical coherence theory and the semiclassical and quantum mechanical theories of the laser. More recently many new and interesting effects have been predicted. These include the role of coherent atomic effects in lasing without inversion and electromagnetically induced transparency, atom optics, laser cooling and trapping, teleportation, the single-atom micromaser and its role in quantum measurement theory, to name a few. The International Conference on Laser Physics and Quantum Optics was held in Shanghai from August 25 to August 28, 1999, to discuss these and many other exciting developments in laser physics and quantum optics. The international character of the conference was manifested by the fact that scientists from over 13 countries participated and lectured at the conference. There were four keynote lectures delivered by Nobel laureate Willis Lamb, Jr., Profs. H. Walther, A.E. Siegman and M.O. Scully. In addition, there were 34 invited lectures, 27 contributed oral presentations, and 59 poster papers.
