Book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Laser Velocimetry in Fluid Mechanics written by Alain Boutier and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-01-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In fluid mechanics, velocity measurement is fundamental in order to improve the behavior knowledge of the flow. Velocity maps help us to understand the mean flow structure and its fluctuations, in order to further validate codes. Laser velocimetry is an optical technique for velocity measurements; it is based on light scattering by tiny particles assumed to follow the flow, which allows the local fluid flow velocity and its fluctuations to be determined. It is a widely used non-intrusive technique to measure velocities in fluid flows, either locally or in a map. This book presents the various techniques of laser velocimetry, as well as their specific qualities: local measurements or in plane maps, mean or instantaneous values, 3D measurements. Flow seeding with particles is described with currently used products, as well as the appropriate aerosol generators. Post-processing of data allows us to extract synthetic information from measurements and to perform comparisons with results issued from CFD codes. The principles and characteristics of the different available techniques, all based on the scattering of light by tiny particles embedded in the flow, are described in detail; showing how they deliver different information, either locally or in a map, mean values and turbulence characteristics.

Book Turbulence Measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter

Download or read book Turbulence Measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter written by William Joseph Yanta and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) using the dual scatter or differential Doppler mode have been made in a subsonic, fully developed channel flow. The measurements were made using only those light scattering particles occurring naturally in air. Results include mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress distributions and a skewness measurement of the velocity distribution function across the channel. Statistical techniques were used to obtain the various turbulence parameters. Guidelines have been established for the amount of data needed to obtain results with a specified accuracy and confidence level. Measurements have also been made to determine the particle-size distribution. An aerodynamic means was used to determine the size distribution, in contrast to the usual optical procedures. Book The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in Supersonic Flow

Download or read book The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in Supersonic Flow written by William Joseph Yanta and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Results are presented for an experimental program which investigated the application of an LDV technique in supersonic flows. This paper presents an analysis of the behavior of light-scattering particles in rapidly accelerating or shock decelerated flows, an evaluation of particle production techniques and the results of several velocity measurements. Measurements included the velocity distribution along the nozzle centerline and flow over a diamond airfoil in a Mach 3 tunnel and velocity profiles for a turbulent boundary layer in a Mach 4.8 facility. It is demonstrated that LDV measurements can be made consistently with errors of less than five percent if the particle lag is considered. (Author).

Book Particle Sizing Experiments with the Laser Doppler Velocimeter

Download or read book Particle Sizing Experiments with the Laser Doppler Velocimeter written by and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement techniques for in-situ simultaneous measurements of particle size distributions and particle velocities using the dual beam laser Doppler velocimeter (LV) were analytically and experimentally investigated. This investigation examined the different signal characteristics of the LV for determination of particle size and particle velocity, simultaneously. The different size related signal components were evaluated not only singularly but also as simultaneous measurements to determine which characteristic, or combination of characteristics, provided the best measure of particle size. The evaluation concentrated on the 0.5 to 5 .mu.m particle size range, in which the LV light scattering characteristics are complex often non-monotonic functions of the particle size as well as functions of index of refraction, the laser light wavelength, laser intensity and polarization, and the location and response characteristics of the detector. Different components of the LV signal were considered, but analysis concentrated on Doppler phase, visibility and scatter-intensity because they show the greatest promise. These signals characteristics were initially defined analytically for numerous optical configurations over the 0.5 to 5 .mu.m diameter range with 0.1 .mu.m segmentation, for refractive index values from 1.0 to 3.0 with absorptive (imaginary) components varied form 0 to 1.0. Collector orientation and effective f/No., as well as fringe spacing, beam polarization and wavelength, were varied in this analytical evaluation. 18 refs., 42 figs., 5 tabs.

Book Simultaneous Three Dimensional Velocity and Mixing Measurements by Use of Laser Doppler Velocimetry and Fluorescence Probes in a Water Tunnel

Download or read book Simultaneous Three Dimensional Velocity and Mixing Measurements by Use of Laser Doppler Velocimetry and Fluorescence Probes in a Water Tunnel written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-10 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A water tunnel investigation was conducted to demonstrate the capabilities of a laser-based instrument that can measure velocity and fluorescence intensity simultaneously. Fluorescence intensity of an excited fluorescent dye is directly related to concentration level and is used to indicate the extent of mixing in flow. This instrument is a three-dimensional laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in combination with a fluorometer for measuring fluorescence intensity variations. This capability allows simultaneous flow measurements of the three orthogonal velocity components and mixing within the same region. Two different flows which were generated by two models were studied: a generic nonaxisymmetric nozzle propulsion simulation model with an auxiliary internal water source that generated a jet flow and an axisymmetric forebody model with a circular sector strake that generated a vortex flow. The off-body flow fields around these models were investigated in the Langley 16- by 24-Inch Water Tunnel. The experimental results were used to calculate 17 quantities that included mean and fluctuating velocities, Reynolds stresses, mean and fluctuating dye fluorescence intensities (proportional to concentration), and fluctuating velocity and dye concentration correlations. An uncertainty analysis was performed to establish confidence levels in the experimental results. In general, uncertainties in mean velocities varied between 1 and 7 percent of free-stream velocity; uncertainties in fluctuating velocities varied between 1 and 5 percent of reference values. The results show characteristics that are unique to each type of flow. Neuhart, Dan H. and Wing, David J. and Henderson, Uleses C., Jr. Langley Research Center...

The book will serve as a valuable reference book in any fluid mechanics laboratory where the laser Doppler or phase Doppler techniques are used. This work reflects the authors' long practical experience in the development of the techniques and equipment, as the many examples confirm.

Book Investigation of Particle size Determination from the Optical Response of a Laser doppler Velocimeter

Download or read book Investigation of Particle size Determination from the Optical Response of a Laser doppler Velocimeter written by Dana G. Andrews and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intensity of laser light back-scattered from a particle and transmitted by a Fabry-Perot interferometer is used to determine particle-size. The instrument's optics and electronics are calibrated by examining stationary particles of known diameter resting on a non-reflective glass slide. The response of the instrument is determined by comparing measured intensities with theoretical values calculated as a complex function of particle size, refractive index and ray geometry. The results show that the measured intensities do approximate the theoretical variation with particle size and in the range of particle diameters measured (1-10 microns), the error is less than one micron.
