Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasing possibilities of computer-aided data processing have caused a new revival of optical techniques in many areas of mechanical and chemical en gineering. Optical methods have a long tradition in heat and mass transfer and in fluid dynamics. Global experimental information is not sufficient for developing constitution equations to describe complicated phenomena in fluid dynamics or in transfer processes by a computer program . Furthermore, a detailed insight with high local and temporal resolution into the thermo-and fluiddynamic situations is necessary. Sets of equations for computer program in thermo dynamics and fluid dynamics usually consist of two types of formulations: a first one derived from the conservation laws for mass, energy and momentum, and a second one mathematically modelling transport processes like laminar or turbulent diffusion. For reliably predicting the heat transfer, for example, the velocity and temperature field in the boundary layer must be known, or a physically realistic and widely valid correlation describing the turbulence must be avail able. For a better understanding of combustion processes it is necessary to know the local concentration and temperature just ahead of the flame and in the ignition zone.

Book Doppler Shift Laser Velocimeter Data Processor

Download or read book Doppler Shift Laser Velocimeter Data Processor written by Henry T. Kalb and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The patent describes an apparatus for extracting doppler shift frequency information from signals which are produced by dual scatter laser velocimeter over the doppler frequency range of 1 to 300 MHz. The laser doppler velocimeter data which is translated and processed into a form compatible with digital computer inputs may be obtained for very short scan times.

Book Turbulence Measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter

Download or read book Turbulence Measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter written by William Joseph Yanta and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbulence measurements with a Laser Doppler Velocimeter (LDV) using the dual scatter or differential Doppler mode have been made in a subsonic, fully developed channel flow. The measurements were made using only those light scattering particles occurring naturally in air. Results include mean velocity profiles, turbulence intensities, Reynolds stress distributions and a skewness measurement of the velocity distribution function across the channel. Statistical techniques were used to obtain the various turbulence parameters. Guidelines have been established for the amount of data needed to obtain results with a specified accuracy and confidence level. Measurements have also been made to determine the particle-size distribution. An aerodynamic means was used to determine the size distribution, in contrast to the usual optical procedures. Book Nomograms for the Doppler Shift Velocimeter

Download or read book Nomograms for the Doppler Shift Velocimeter written by George H. Mycroft and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The preliminary design of a laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) for a particular application requires the determination of the frequency-to-velocity conversion constant and the spacial resolution of the focal volume. These parameters give the frequency range required of the signal processing electronics and the size of the region in which velocity measurements are being made. These values are determined from the laser wavelength, the focal length of the focusing lens, the angle of the LDV beam pair intersection, and the diameter of the focused beams at the intersection. A set of nomographic scales has been developed to allow rapid and accurate determination of these parameters. They are also particularly useful in evaluating the effects of parameter variation and optimization of the LDV. (Author).

Book excerpt: Because it uses light scattering, Doppler shift, and optical heterodyne, laser Doppler velocimetry is an extremely powerful diagnostic technique for the measurement of flow velocity components. Its basic principles, optical arrangements, signal processing techniques, and applications are discussed as well as its advantages, disadvantages, and applications in the study of fluid mechanics. Keywords: Flow velocity diagnostic; Doppler shift; Time of flight; laser speckle data processing; Light scattering; Local oscillator; Optical mixing spectroscopy; Reacting flows; Turbulent flows.

Book Field Test Results of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter and an Acoustic Doppler Wind Sounder

Download or read book Field Test Results of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter and an Acoustic Doppler Wind Sounder written by Frederick J. Brousaides and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A field test program was conducted to evaluate the potential of two indirect wind sensing techniques as possible support in a warm fog dispersal system. The sensors examined were a Laser Doppler Velocimeter and an Acoustic Doppler Wind Sounder. Data from these devices were correlated with measurements taken by anemometers mounted upon a 61-m meteorological tower. The average deviation of the Laser Doppler Velocimeter was + or - 1.0 m/sec in wind speed and + or - 7 deg in azimuth. Five-minute averaging periods were taken and four to six altitudes were scanned during each run. The average deviation of the Acoustic Doppler Wind Sounder for 5-min averages was + or - 0.9 m/sec in wind speed and + or - 13 deg in azimuth. In one protracted run using 10-min averages, the deviations were + or - 0.6 m/sec in wind speed and + or - 6 deg in azimuth.

Book Scattering Techniques Applied to Supramolecular and Nonequilibrium Systems

Download or read book Scattering Techniques Applied to Supramolecular and Nonequilibrium Systems written by Sow Hsin Chen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 909 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Advanced Study Institute was held at \-lellesley College, Wellesley, MA. , from 3 to 12 August 1980. It followed by four years the second "Capri ~,chool on Photon Correlation Spectroscopy". During the intervening period there had been many new applications of dynamic light scattering techniques to the study of systems whose properties depend either on collective molecular interactions or on the formation or activity of supramo1ecu1ar structures. Con sequently, emphasis at this conference was on light scattering studies of subjects such as dynamical correlations in dense polymer solutions, phase transitions in gels, spinodal decomposition of binary fluids, Benard instabilities in nonequilibrium fluids, the formation of micelles and phospholipid vesicles, and movements of the molecular assemblies of muscle tissue. The instructional pro gramme also included tutorial lectures on two complementary spec troscopic techniques which have benefited from dramatic advances in instrumentation, these being small angle X-ray (SAXS) and small angle neutron (SANS) scattering. Strong cold neutron and synchro tron X-ray sources have become available, and data now can be acquired rapidly with newly developed position-sensitive detectors. Several reviews of recent applications of SAXS and SANS were also provided. The organizers of the ASI hoped to provide a forum for theoreticians and experimentalists to assess advances in fields which, although related, were sufficiently different that a great deal of unfamiliar information could be communicated. The order ing of the papers in this volume closely approximates that of the talks presented at the Advanced Study Institute.
