Book Coherent Laser Beam Combining

Download or read book Coherent Laser Beam Combining written by Arnaud Brignon and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-11-13 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laser beam combining techniques allow increasing the power of lasers far beyond what it is possible to obtain from a single conventional laser. One step further, coherent beam combining (CBC) also helps to maintain the very unique properties of the laser emission with respect to its spectral and spatial properties. Such lasers are of major interest for many applications, including industrial, environmental, defense, and scientific applications. Recently, significant progress has beenmade in coherent beam combining lasers, with a total output power of 100 kW already achieved. Scaling analysis indicates that further increase of output power with excellent beam quality is feasible by using existing state-of-the-art lasers. Thus, the knowledge of coherent beam combining techniques will become crucial for the design of next-generation highpower lasers. The purpose of this book is to present the more recent concepts of coherent beam combining by world leader teams in the field.

Download or read book Incoherent Combining of High Power Fiber Lasers for Directed Energy Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-power fiber lasers can be incoherently combined to form the basis of a directed high-energy laser system. This approach has a number of advantages over other beam combining methods and can result in compact, robust, low maintenance and long-lifetime high-energy laser systems. The first field demonstration of incoherent beam combining using kilowatt-class, single-mode fiber lasers over a kilometer propagation range is discussed. The experiment employed four fiber lasers and a beam director consisting of individually controlled steering mirrors. Propagation efficiencies greater than 90% at power levels of 3 kilowatts were demonstrated at a range greater than 1 kilometer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-power fiber lasers can be incoherently combined to form the basis of a high-energy laser system for directed-energy applications. These applications include tactical directed energy and power beaming. Incoherent combining of fiber lasers has a number of advantages over other laser beam combining methods. The incoherently combined laser system is relatively simple, highly efficient, compact, robust, low-maintenance, and reliable. In this article, we characterize the atmospheric propagation of incoherently combined, high optical quality laser beams and compare them with other types of laser beams and combining methods. For tactical directed-energy applications, we find that the propagation efficiency of incoherently combined high optical quality beams is near the theoretical upper limit for any laser system with the same beam director and total power. We present results of the first atmospheric propagation experiments using incoherently combined, kilowatt-class, single-mode fiber lasers. These NRL field experiments combined four fiber lasers using a beam director consisting of individually controlled steering mirrors. The transmitted continuous-wave power was 3 kW at a range of 1.2 km with a demonstrated propagation efficiency of tilde 90% in moderate atmospheric turbulence. The experimental results are found to be in good agreement with simulations and theory.

Book Fiber Lasers

Download or read book Fiber Lasers written by Johan Meyer and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past two decades, the use of fiber lasers in engineering applications has gradually become established as an engineering discipline on its own. The development of fiber lasers is mainly the result of studies from various domains like photonics, optical sensing, fiber optics, nonlinear optics, and telecommunication. Though many excellent books exist on each of these subjects, and several have been written specifically to address lasers and fiber lasers, it is still difficult to find one book where the diverse core of subjects that are central to the study of fiber laser systems are presented in simple and straight forward way. Fiber Lasers: Fundamentals with MATLAB Modelling, is an introduction to the fundamentals of fiber lasers. It provides clear explanations of physical concepts supporting the field of fiber lasers. Fiber lasers’ characteristics are analyzed theoretically through simulations derived from numerical models. The authors cover fundamental principles involved in the generation of laser light through both continuous-wave (CW) and pulsing. It also covers experimental configuration and characterization for both CW and Q-switching. The authors describe the simulation of fiber laser systems and propose numerical modelling of various fiber laser schemes. MATLAB® modelling and numerical computational methods are used throughout the book to simulate different fiber laser system configurations. This book will be highly desirable and beneficial for both academics and industry professionals to have ample examples of fiber laser approaches that are well thought out and fully integrated with the subjects covered in the text. This book is written to address these needs.

Book High Power Ytterbium and Thulium Fiber Lasers

Download or read book High Power Ytterbium and Thulium Fiber Lasers written by Justin S. Cook and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High power fiber lasers have revolutionized many areas of both basic research and industry with their high power, high brightness output and capability for a compact, monolithic design. These systems are often run in multimode operation with few constraints on output. However, for many directed energy applications, such as spectral beam combining, the necessary laser parameters are far more stringent, requiring systems with state-of-the-art characteristics, such as single transverse mode operation, narrow linewidth and multi-kW output powers. Currently, further growth in output power of fiber laser systems at 1 and 2 [micrometer] is hindered by various nonlinear and thermal limitations within the fiber gain medium. Specifically, 1 [micrometer] systems are primarily hindered by transverse mode instability, while 2 [micrometer] lasers at high average powers often encounter an effect known as modulation instability. This dissertation explores the power scaling potential of both Yb-doped and Tm-doped fiber lasers along with related applications. Power scaling of two different Yb:fiber amplifiers is examined, where first, a novel confined-doping fiber geometry is used to generate 450 W single mode output, and second, through a demonstration of a Yb:fiber amplifier with > 2200 W output power and quasi-single mode beam quality. At 2 [micrometer], a new pumping architecture known as in-band pumping is utilized in an effort to take Tm-doped fiber amplifiers first to the multi-100 W level and then into the multi-kW regime. An in-band pumped laser is developed and characterized with over 75 W output power and > 80% slope efficiency. The last laser system constructed is a tunable, narrow linewidth Tm-doped fiber laser used to systematically induce and study the effects of thermal blooming. Results obtained from scanning the wavelength across individual atmospheric absorption resonances are presented, along with time-resolved data obtained at a fixed wavelength. Finally, two candidate fiber designs are presented for power scaling of in-band pumping at 2 [micrometer] to the multi-kW power level. Numerical studies detail the performance of these two fiber designs at high average powers and their ability to suppress the onset of modulation instability. Taken together, the results discussed in this dissertation further the science of fiber lasers for directed energy applications.

Book Multi segment Coherent Beam Combining

Download or read book Multi segment Coherent Beam Combining written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scaling laser systems to large sizes for power beaming and other applications can sometimes be simplified by combing a number of smaller lasers. However, to fully utilize this scaling, coherent beam combination is necessary. This requires measuring and controlling each beam's pointing and phase relative to adjacent beams using an adaptive optical system. We have built a sub-scale brass-board to evaluate various methods for beam-combining. It includes a segmented adaptive optic and several different specialized wavefront sensors that are fabricated using diffractive optics methods. We have evaluated a number of different phasing algorithms, including hierarchical and matrix methods, and have demonstrated phasing of several elements. The system is currently extended to a large number of segments to evaluate various scaling methodologies.
