Book Ultrafast Laser Based Coherent Control Methods for Explosives Detection

Download or read book Ultrafast Laser Based Coherent Control Methods for Explosives Detection written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The detection of explosives is a notoriously difficult problem, especially at stand-off, due to their (generally) low vapor pressure, environmental and matrix interferences, and packaging. We are exploring Optimal Dynamic Detection of Explosives (ODD-Ex), which exploits the best capabilities of recent advances in laser technology and recent discoveries in optimal shaping of laser pulses for control of molecular processes to significantly enhance the standoff detection of explosives. The core of the ODD-Ex technique is the introduction of optimally shaped laser pulses to simultaneously enhance sensitivity to explosives signatures while dramatically improving specificity, particularly against matrix materials and background interferences. These goals are being addressed by operating in an optimal non-linear fashion, typically with a single shaped laser pulse inherently containing within it coherently locked control and probe subpulses. Recent results will be presented.

Book Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism Second Edition

Download or read book Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism Second Edition written by Mark A. Prelas and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2010-08-10 with total page 606 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditionally, resources on terrorism and counterterrorism tend to focus on the social, behavioral, and legal aspects of the subject, with minimal emphasis on the scientific and technological aspects. Taking into account these practical considerations, the second edition of Science and Technology of Terrorism and Counterterrorism discusses the nature of terrorism and the materials used by terrorists. It describes how intelligence professionals and law enforcement personnel can detect and destroy these materials, and how they can deal with terrorist groups. This volume begins by introducing the shift in analysis of terrorist attacks after September 11, 2001 and summarizes selected case studies. It discusses the origin and nature of terrorism and the factors involved in diplomacy. Covering a broad range of topics, the book examines: Aerosol dispersion of toxic materials Bioterrorism and the manufacture, detection, and delivery of biological agents Agricultural terrorism Nuclear terrorism and nuclear weapons systems, threats, and safeguards Chemical terrorism, including manufacture, detection, delivery, and decontamination Cyber-terrorism Personal protective equipment The role of government at federal, state, and local levels The role of international agencies and their resources, capabilities, and responsibilities The National Infrastructure Protection Plan As terrorist activities increase globally, it is critical that those charged with protecting the public understand the myriad of ways in which terrorists operate. While we cannot predict where, when, and how terrorists will strike, our vigilance in staying abreast of the terrorist threat is the only way to have a fighting chance against those who seek to destroy our world.

Book Detection of Liquid Explosives and Flammable Agents in Connection with Terrorism

Download or read book Detection of Liquid Explosives and Flammable Agents in Connection with Terrorism written by Hiltmar Schubert and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-05-21 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The organization of an Advanced Research Workshop with the title “Detection and Disposal of Liquid Explosives and Flammable Agents in Connection with Terrorism” was motivated by international findings about activities in this field of application. This ARW followed a meeting about the “Detection of Disposal Improvised Explosives” (St. Petersburg, 2005). Both items show the logistic problems as one of the lessons, terrorists have to overcome. These problems are connected with the illegal supply and transport of explosives and fuels and as counter-measure the detection of these materials. The invention of liquid explosives goes back to the middle of the 19th century and was used for special purposes in the commercial field of application. Because of the high sensitivity of liquid explosives against mechanical shock, caused by adiabatic compression of air-bobbles producing “hot spots” as origin of initiation the commercial application was not very successful. Because of this high risk, liquid explosives are not used in military or commercial application with some exceptions. In the commercial field explosives as slurries or emulsions consisting of suitable salts (Ammoniumnitrate etc.) and water are used to a large extend because of their high insensitivity. In many cases these slurries or emulsions were unfit for terrorist actions, because of their low sensitivity, large critical diameter and using in confinement. In the military field liquid explosives are used in World War I and II as bomb-fillings.

Book Laser Photofragmentation and Heterogeneous Chemiluminescence for Nitro based Explosive Detection

Download or read book Laser Photofragmentation and Heterogeneous Chemiluminescence for Nitro based Explosive Detection written by Maria Pamela Pineda Monterola and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: The purpose of this research was to develop a simple, fast, reliable, sensitive and potentially portable explosive detection device employing laser photofragmentation (PF) followed by heterogeneous chemiluminescence (CL) detection. The PF process involves the release of NOx(x=1,2) moieties from explosive compounds such as TNT, RDX, and PETN through a stepwise excitation-dissociation process using a 193 nm ArF laser. The NOx(x=1,2) produced upon PF is subsequently detected by its CL reaction with basic luminol solution .The intensity of the CL signal was detected by thermoelectrically cooled photomultiplier tube with high quantum efficiency and negligible dark current counts. The research work was divided into four stages: (1) discerning the PF pathways of nitrobased explosives (2) luminol-CL method development and optimization for improving NO2 sensitivity (3) construction of CrO3 oxidizer for NO to NO2 conversion (4) evaluation of the device in detecting nitro-based explosives in various media including air and soil matrix. In the first stage of the research, the following PF pathways were verified using classical colorimetric analysis and a fast time resolved absorbance method. R--NO2 + hv --> R+ NO2; hv = 193 nm (1) NO2 + hv --> NO+ O*; hv = 193 nm (2).

Book Vapour and Trace Detection of Explosives for Anti Terrorism Purposes

Download or read book Vapour and Trace Detection of Explosives for Anti Terrorism Purposes written by M. Krausa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2004-10-18 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fast detection of explosives from the vapor phase would be one way to enhance the protection of society against terrorist attacks. Up to now the problem of detection of explosives, especially the location of explosives whether at large areas e. g. station halls, theaters or hidden in cars, aircraft cargo, baggage or explosives hidden in crowds e. g. suicide bombers or bombs in bags has not been solved. Smelling of explosives like dogs do seems to be a valuable tool for a security chain. In general different strategies can be adopt to the basic problem of explosive detection: • bulk detection • vapor detection Normally meetings cover both aspects and applications of the detection. Even though both methods might fulfill special aspects of a general security chain the underlying scientific questions differ strongly. Because of that the discussions of the scientists and practitioners from the different main directions are sometimes only less specific. Therefore the NATO Advisory Panel in Security-Related Civil Science and Technology proposed a small series of NATO ARW's which focuses on the different scientific aspects of explosives detection methods. This book is based on material presented at the first NATO ARW of this series in Moscow which covered the topic: Vapor and trace detection of explosives. The second ARW was held in St. Petersburg and treated the topic Bulk detection methods. The third workshop was held in Warwick and focused on electronic noses which cover a somewhat different aspect of vapor detection.
