An Open Secret draws on personal interviews and medical records to uncover the history of women’s experiences with unwanted pregnancy and abortion in the South American country of Bolivia. This Andean nation is home to a diverse population of indigenous and mixed-race individuals who practice a range of medical traditions. Centering on the cities of La Paz and El Alto, the book explores how women decided whether to continue or terminate their pregnancies and the medical practices to which women recurred in their search for reproductive health care between the early 1950s and 2010. It demonstrates that, far from constituting private events with little impact on the public sphere, women’s intimate experiences with pregnancy contributed to changing policies and services in reproductive health in Bolivia.

Book excerpt: In 1997, when Lucia Guerra-Reyes began research in Peru, she observed a profound disconnect between the birth care desires of health personnel and those of indigenous women. Midwives and doctors would plead with her as the anthropologist to "educate women about the dangerous inadequacy of their traditions." They failed to see how their aim of achieving low rates of maternal mortality clashed with the experiences of local women, who often feared public health centers, where they could experience discrimination and verbal or physical abuse. Mainly, the women and their families sought a "good" birth, which was normally a home birth that corresponded with Andean perceptions of health as a balance of bodily humors. Peru's Intercultural Birthing Policy of 2005 was intended to solve these longstanding issues by recognizing indigenous cultural values and making biomedical care more accessible and desirable for indigenous women. Yet many difficulties remain. Guerra-Reyes also gives ethnographic attention to health care workers. She explains the class and educational backgrounds of traditional birth attendants and midwives, interviews doctors and health care administrators, and describes their interactions with local families. Interviews with national policy makers put the program in context.

The book examines the implications that psychiatric institutionalisation within the context of interethnic, gender, and class schemes, has on what it means to be human. It also draws on a theoretical framework in order to understand how discourses shape, and are simultaneously problematized by individual experiences of sexual violence and incest. Intergenerational incestuous violence against women is not necessarily an exceptional event, but can be an ordinary process, one where through the articulation of biomedical and indigenous medicine, as well as indigenous and mestizo forms of administration of political power, women as subjects can become possible. This book will appeal to scholars and students with an interest in gender-based violence, as well as mental-health practitioners and academics in Latin American studies, anthropology, gender studies, and sociology.

Intihuatana es una misteriosa escultura irregular, localizada a un extremo del Templo de las Tres Ventanas, un obervatorio Inca de la Ciudad de Macchupicchu en Perú, considerada una de las maravillas del mundo. Cuenta la Leyenda Inca, que Intihuatana era utilizado para amarrar al Sol, en un esfuerzo por evitar que se fuera, o quizá sólo para alargar el día y estirar las horas de luz. El Sol era considerado el Padre y Dios de los Incas e Intihuatana era una roca labrada ubicada en casi todas las cudades incas. Con la llegada de los españoles al Perú todas las Intihuatanas fueron destruidas permaneciendo en el tiempo solo la que existe hoy en Macchupicchu. María Belén (Maribé) escucha últimamente indefi nibles sonidos en el sótano de su casa donde por años nadie ha descendido. Su prima Mercedes, de sensibilidad especial viene para acompañarla a bajar al sótano y descubrir la procedencia de ellos. Caminando entre piezas antiguas encuentran un antiguo baúl cerrado. Después de algunos intentos logran abrirlo. Entre extrañas curiosidades encuentran unas escrituras. Quién y de qué trata todo ello? Descubren que la escritora se llama Tess. La reconocen como su antepasada. La curiosidad las distrae del objetivo por el que están en el lugar. Se entretienen leyendo rápidamente, resumiendo páginas. Tess tiene muchas cosas expresadas en papel. Casi toda una vida. Se emocionan compartiendo sus letras y vivencias . Pero no están solas. Alguien más que se manifi esta de modo incomprensible. Poco a poco se dan cuenta que son prisioneras de la realidad de si mismas y desearán escapar y vivir una nueva vida. Lo lograrán?

Book excerpt: This glossary has been prepared in order to leave a record of the Quechua spoken by the people of Huarás and surrounding areas in the mid-20th century. Huarás, capital of the Region (Department) of Ancash, Peru, has a distinct form of Quechua. That dialect was endangered due to a massive earthquake on May 31, 1970. Tens of thousands of people died, and the city was destroyed. Many of the survivors left the area. Once rebuilt, Huarás was repopulated with people new to the area who use Spanish or a different dialect to communicate. Since then, technological influences such as the Internet also reinforce the use of Spanish, to the detriment of the local Quechua. Born in Huarás, I was raised in a bilingual environment, Spanish and Quechua. Although I left the area to attend the university, I could always feel at home upon returning, until that earthquake. Since then it seems strange to return to an unfamiliar city, due to people, language and environment. I hope this glossary will help the newer generations better understand, not only their grandparents and ancestors, but the culture from which they come. Language and culture are intimately tied, and much more than words is lost when a language dies. The Inca Empire (Tahuantinsuyo) was invaded by Spain in 1532. At that time Quechua was spoken, never written, throughout the Inca civilization, with many dialects. Since then, the Spanish language has been imposed, but in Huarás never did it replace Quechua to the extent that it did in 1970. This glossary contains words, several verb forms, and phrases. It is written with the expectation that it may help to preserve the inherited Quechua, so that Huarás may remain bilingual. It is written for huarasinos, the people of Huarás. The Nazca Lines, 22 km/13 miles north of Nazca, were made by removing the darker sun-baked stones and piling them on either side of the line, exposing the lighter soil. Why the lines were made is still open to much debate, but scientists have a fairly good idea of who made them. The Paracas and Nazca peoples are believed to have created the lines between 900 BC to 600 AD. It is also believed that the Huari settlers from Ayacucho made some additions in the seventh century. There are literally hundreds of lines and geometric shapes that stretch for miles, but the animals such as a monkey, dog, spider, whale, and several birds, including a hummingbird with a wingspan of over 100 yards, are the most well-known.
