Book excerpt: El intento por dotar al estudio de las migraciones humanas de un estatuto científico, ha sido un objeto largamente acariciado desde fines del siglo XIX. Sin embargo, la evidencia nos indica que los esfuerzos realizados por estudiar este multifacético fenómeno social, han permanecido dispersos en un voluminoso caudal de información hasta hoy nunca inventariada, ni clasificada sistemáticamente para fines de consulta. Aunque las exigencias temáticas y la tenacidad de los investigadores han puesto de relieve una parte considerable de tales contribuciones conceptuales, existe todavia un notable y deficiente rezago en su conocimiento. Recuperar, clasificar y ordenar lo que se ha escrito en materia de teoría de las migraciones ha sido precisamente el propósito central de la presente obra. Resulta obvio destacar el ahorro de tiempo que ello significa para su estudio principalmente por el caractér histórico, pluriconceptual e interdisciplinario que revisten las migraciones humanas. Asi mismo, el estudio de la evolución alcanzada en su desarrollo teórico es de un inapreciable valor para la formulación de políticas públicas sobre un problema social, político y económico cuya evaluación y análisis es ya una constante de la más alta prioridad en el presente siglo.
