Book The Spanish Literary Generation of 1968

Download or read book The Spanish Literary Generation of 1968 written by William M. Sherzer and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2012-05-04 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spanish Literary Generation of 1968: José Maria Guelbenzu, Lourdes Ortiz, and Ana María Moix serves multiple purposes. Most importantly, it is an overview of an important moment in Spanish literary history that is connected to an extremely important moment in world history, 1968, as well as what that year represents in many countries, such as France, Germany, Mexico, and the United States. This text aims to show how young writers who were coming of age precisely at that moment incorporated into their novels the new ideas that they found in the writing of many foreign authors, generally unknown to previous generations, whose works were essential to their development. The author has focused on three authors who he feels are most representative of their generation, and follows with a lengthy study of the critical reception they have received over time. Finally, in an appendix, one will find excerpts of an unpublished novel by Lourdes Ortiz and interviews with all three authors. It is hoped that this text, with its extensive bibliography, will serve as a valuable source for students and professors alike.

  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book School Memories written by Cristina Yanes-Cabrera and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-15 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reveals how school memories offer not only a tool for accessing the school of the past, but also a key to understanding what people today know (or think they know) about the school of the past. It describes, in fact, how historians’ work does not purely and simply consist in exploring school as it really was, but also in the complex process of defining the memory of school as one developed and revisited over time at both the individual and collective level. Further, it investigates the extent to which what people “know” reflects the reality or is in fact a product of stereotypes that are deeply rooted in common perceptions and thus exceedingly difficult to do away with. The book includes fifteen peer-reviewed contributions that were presented and discussed during the International Symposium “School Memories. New Trends in Historical Research into Education: Heuristic Perspectives and Methodological Issues” (Seville, 22-23 September, 2015).

Book The Films of Arturo Ripstein

Download or read book The Films of Arturo Ripstein written by Manuel Gutiérrez Silva and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-10-24 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gathers eleven scholarly contributions dedicated to the work of Mexican director Arturo Ripstein. The collection, the first of its kind, constitutes a sustained critical engagement with the twenty-nine films made by this highly acclaimed yet under-studied filmmaker. The eleven essays included come from scholars whose work stands at the intersection of the fields of Latin American and Mexican Film Studies, Gender and Queer Studies, Cultural Studies, History and Literary studies. Ripstein’s films, often scripted by his long-time collaborator, Paz Alicia Garciadiego, represent an unprecedented achievement in Mexican and Latin American film. Unlike many of his contemporaries, Ripstein has successfully maintained a prolific output unmatched by any director in the region. Though several book-length studies have been published in Spanish, French, German, and Greek, to date no analogue exists in English. This volume provides a much-needed contribution to the field.

Book excerpt: “The path to sainthood is varied for every individual, but a few common virtues and traits are shared by every saint: holiness, strength, and courage. Join Melanie Rigney for a new perspective on the lives of many well-known saints and an introduction to new spiritual giants to accompany you on your own journey of radical love and faith.” —Lisa M. Hendey, author, I'm a Saint in the Making Radical Saints: 21 Women for the 21st Century features twenty-one saints who walked the earth in the twentieth century and were canonized in the twenty-first. Each chapter tells the story of one woman’s radical gift and the world in which she lived. You’ll also find stories of everyday women who are living these gifts in ways large and small today. “Is there anything more radical than loving God with your entire being and loving your neighbor as yourself?” Rigney writes. “How about loving those who look different from us or who have betrayed us, injured us, or persecuted us simply because we’re told God loves them every bit as much as he loves us. Now that’s radical.” Some of the women featured include Jacinta Marto, Elizabeth of the Trinity, Teresa of Calcutta, , Marianne Cope, Mary Mackillop, Gianna Beretta Molla, Katharine Drexel, Josephine Bakhita, and Maria Faustina Kowalska.

Book The Cambridge Companion to the Spanish Novel

Download or read book The Cambridge Companion to the Spanish Novel written by Harriet Turner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-11 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cambridge Companion to the Spanish Novel presents the development of the modern Spanish novel from 1600 to the present. Drawing on the combined legacies of Don Quijote and the traditions of the picaresque novel, these essays focus on the question of invention and experiment, on what constitutes the singular features of evolving fictional forms. It examines how the novel articulates the relationships between history and fiction, high and popular culture, art and ideology, and gender and society. Contributors highlight the role played by historical events and cultural contexts in the elaboration of the Spanish novel, which often takes a self-conscious stance toward literary tradition. Topics covered include the regional novel, women writers, and film and literature. This companionable survey, which includes a chronology and guide to further reading, conveys a vivid sense of the innovative techniques of the Spanish novel and of the debates surrounding it.

Book Religion Power and Protest in Local Communities

Download or read book Religion Power and Protest in Local Communities written by Eric R. Wolf and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-08-17 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series Religion and Society (RS) contributes to the exploration of religions as social systems– both in Western and non-Western societies; in particular, it examines religions in their differentiation from, and intersection with, other cultural systems, such as art, economy, law and politics. Due attention is given to paradigmatic case or comparative studies that exhibit a clear theoretical orientation with the empirical and historical data of religion and such aspects of religion as ritual, the religious imagination, constructions of tradition, iconography, or media. In addition, the formation of religious communities, their construction of identity, and their relation to society and the wider public are key issues of this series.

Book Configurations of a Cultural Scene

Download or read book Configurations of a Cultural Scene written by Andrew A. Anderson and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the 1920s, a remarkable number of young writers and artists lived and worked in Madrid, creating an atmosphere of effervescence and an upsurge in creativity that has rarely been equalled. These young people, acquainting themselves with one another within the span of only a few years, came together to form a tightly woven network of both personal and artistic relationships. In Configurations of a Cultural Scene Andrew Anderson explores this growing community of artists and writers with a focus on how sites of face-to-face interaction in Madrid fostered creative work and forged young identities. Organizing locations into places of sociability, learning, and residence, Anderson offers five case studies that exemplify the significance of these three points of intersection: Rafael Barradas and his tertulia at the Café de Oriente; an artists’ studio located on the Pasaje de la Alhambra; women art students at the Academia de San Fernando who lodged at the Residencia de Señoritas; the artist and writer Gabriel García Maroto; and the close relationship between artist Maruja Mallo and poet Rafael Alberti. Departing from conventional approaches that foreground the trajectories of individual careers, Anderson privileges the lived experience of artists and writers in his analysis of a rich cultural scene held together by cooperation, exchange, and interpersonal connections.
