En él, la autora hace un recorrido histórico por las colonias penitenciarias australianas, de Fernando Póo a Annonbon, donde señala tanto sus condiciones como el estado de constante abuso al que se somete a sus internos. Concepción Arenal fue una periodista y pensadora nacida en Ferrol en 1820 y fallecida en Vigo en 1893. Encuadrada en el movimiento del realismo, cultivó tanto la poesía como la narrativa y, sobre todo, el ensayo de corte feminista. Se la considera una de las pioneras del protofeminismo español del siglo XIX, con ideas revolucionarias para su época que terminaron influenciando a muchas intelectuales sucesoras. Asimismo, en su obra siempre estuvo presente un fuerte componente social, que abarcó desde la denuncia de la situación insalubre de las cárceles españolas a la defensa de la labor de varias comunidades religiosas en España.

Exploring punitive mobility to islands, colonies, and remote inland and border regions over a period of five centuries, she proposes a close and enduring connection between punishment, governance, repression, and nation and empire building, and reveals how states, imperial powers, and trading companies used convicts to satisfy various geo-political and social ambitions. Punitive mobility became intertwined with other forms of labour bondage, including enslavement, with convicts a key source of unfree labour that could be used to occupy territories. Far from passive subjects, however, convicts manifested their agency in various forms, including the extension of political ideology and cultural transfer, and vital contributions to contemporary knowledge production.
