Book excerpt: El objetivo de esta investigación es: identificar los indicadores de formación socialmente responsable en los estudiantes de educación superior por medio del diseño y aplicación de un instrumento de diagnóstico de dichos indicadores, dentro de un modelo de gestión académica y pedagógica de una institución de educación superior. Este trabajo, propone que la calidad de la educación superior va mucho más allá, de lo que hoy se mide en sus procesos de acreditación, y muestra la necesidad de que las instituciones de educación superior (IES) cuenten con un instrumento de evaluación de conductas socialmente responsables que se adapte a los utilizados para dar cuenta de la calidad de la educación que imparten. Para justificar la tesis, se rev1san diversos trabajos que ayudan a delimitar lo que actualmente se puede entender como calidad en educación superior en los que se explicita que las instituciones de educación superior deben visibilizar su rol social, donde la pertinencia pasa a ser un factor determinante de la calidad de educación, que busca promover valores y actitudes éticas dentro de los estudiantes. Todo joven y adulto debe tener la oportunidad de aprender valores que le permitan participar plenamente en la sociedad. La investigación se estructura en 3 capítulos, el primero da cuenta del marco teórico de la investigación, busca explicar la relación que existe entre la calidad en educación superior y responsabilidad social universitaria Dentro del marco teórico, en que se desarrolla este capítulo, se hace una fundamentación ético antropológica de la responsabilidad social universitaria, fundamental para responder a los desafíos que impone la globalización en la educación superior. También se hace referencia a la importancia que le han dado distintos autores a la formación de las personas como eje de la responsabilidad social y se concluye que la responsabilidad social universitaria es el eje de la calidad en educación superior, ya que un modelo de gestión socialmente responsable permite dar cuenta a la sociedad de las acciones que se derivan de las funciones que le son propias a cada IES. El capítulo II es el desarrollo de la investigación, que da cuenta del proceso de construcción del instrumento de evaluación de las conductas socialmente responsables en estudiantes de educación superior. Este capítulo se divide dos etapas, la primera corresponde a la construcción del instrumento de evaluación de los indicadores socialmente responsables y una segunda parte, que corresponde al proceso de diseño del instrumento con los indicadores validados, donde se explica el marco metodológico utilizado. El tercer capítulo contempla el pilotaje del instrumento y una propuesta de gestión de planes de mejora. El pilotaje se hizo en una institución de educación chilena y contempló los pasos metodológicos del modelo EFQM. Los análisis de los datos obtenidos del pilotaje son de orden cualitativo y se clasificaron por brechas de mejora para cada dimensión formativa. Junta con ello, se adjuntan las fichas de planes de mejora, que son una propuesta para que la persona encargada de los procesos de gestión de calidad interna pueda orientarse frente a desafíos de gestión académica y pedagógica, ya que no siempre la persona que lidera el departamento de calidad tiene el conocimiento de los procesos académicos y de esta forma se le facilitará el identificar y orientar a los responsables asignados para ejecutar dichos planes. Esta investigación termina con un cuarto capítulo que incluye las conclusiones finales, anexos y bibliografía.

Book excerpt: Based on twenty case studies of universities worldwide, and on a survey administered to leaders in 101 universities, this open access book shows that, amidst the significant challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, universities found ways to engage with schools to support them in sustaining educational opportunity. In doing so, they generated considerable innovation, which reinforced the integration of the research and outreach functions of the university. The evidence suggests that universities are indeed open systems, in interaction with their environment, able to discover changes that can influence them and to change in response to those changes. They are also able, in the success of their efforts to mitigate the educational impact of the pandemic, to create better futures, as the result of the innovations they can generate. This challenges the view of universities as "ivory towers" being isolated from the surrounding environment and detached from local problems. As they reached out to schools, universities not only generated clear and valuable innovations to sustain educational opportunity and to improve it, this process also contributed to transform internal university processes in ways that enhanced their own ability to deliver on the third mission of outreach

Book excerpt: This book provides a solution to the ecological inference problem, which has plagued users of statistical methods for over seventy-five years: How can researchers reliably infer individual-level behavior from aggregate (ecological) data? In political science, this question arises when individual-level surveys are unavailable (for instance, local or comparative electoral politics), unreliable (racial politics), insufficient (political geography), or infeasible (political history). This ecological inference problem also confronts researchers in numerous areas of major significance in public policy, and other academic disciplines, ranging from epidemiology and marketing to sociology and quantitative history. Although many have attempted to make such cross-level inferences, scholars agree that all existing methods yield very inaccurate conclusions about the world. In this volume, Gary King lays out a unique--and reliable--solution to this venerable problem. King begins with a qualitative overview, readable even by those without a statistical background. He then unifies the apparently diverse findings in the methodological literature, so that only one aggregation problem remains to be solved. He then presents his solution, as well as empirical evaluations of the solution that include over 16,000 comparisons of his estimates from real aggregate data to the known individual-level answer. The method works in practice. King's solution to the ecological inference problem will enable empirical researchers to investigate substantive questions that have heretofore proved unanswerable, and move forward fields of inquiry in which progress has been stifled by this problem.
