Las investigadoras tratan de comprobar con este trabajo si el paso del tiempo ha producido cambios significativos en las actitudes ciudadanas durante los últimos veinte años. Para ello han utilizado una estrategia comparativa a lo largo del tiempo. También han intentado encontrar fracturas relevantes de distintos grupos sociales en su grado de apoyo y en sus actitudes hacia el Estado de Bienestar. Entre las conclusiones de este trabajo destacamos que los ciudadanos siguen respaldando el Estado de Bienestar y el modelo de titularidad y financiación pública para las políticas sociales. Este apoyo está relacionado con valores de equidad y universalidad. A pesar de los estereotipos tradicionales sobre la administración pública, como la extendida creencia sobre la mayor eficacia del sector privado en la economía, se reconoce la buena gestión en los servicios y prestaciones públicas. También se constata que las políticas de bienestar son las que más consenso generan en torno al gasto público: los españoles son mayoritariamente contrarios a su reducción y son los capítulos en los que se percibe una insuficiencia en el gasto. Esta tendencia no tiene fluctuaciones a lo largo del tiempo y los ciudadanos estiman que son los mayores solos, los pensionistas y los jóvenes quienes requieren más atención social. Los españoles apoyan, con independencia del nivel educativo, del sexo y de la clase social, un modelo en el que el Estado tenga un papel principal en la provisión de bienestar. Además, consideran modesto el grado de desarrollo del Estado de Bienestar conseguido y es la sanidad el servicio público en el que menos están dispuestos a aceptar un recorte de gasto.

Although a rapid process of modernization occurred, the Spanish welfare state was seen, until fairly recently, as relatively underdeveloped. However, given the progressive Europeanization and expansion of Spanish social policy, questions arise as to whether the Spanish welfare system should still be considered as peripheral to West European welfare states. This volume is divided into three sections. The first section deals with broad trends in the evolution of the Spanish welfare state. To begin with, the consolidation path of social protection policies is explored. Attention is also paid to the process of Europeanization. Furthermore, the analysis explores advances in gender equality policies. In the second section, attention is turned to governance issues, such as collective bargaining, the interplay among levels of government, the welfare mix and public support for social policies. The third and final part of the book addresses five main challenges facing the Spanish welfare state in the 21st century, namely, the need to enhance flexicurity; to achieve a better work-family balance; to coordinate immigration policies with existing social protection; to tackle the persistence of high rates of relative poverty; and to face intense population ageing, both in terms of increasing needs for care and the reform of the pension system.

These concerns have been all the more heightened when the current sovereign debt crisis disproportionately hit this ‘flaky fringe’. This volume systematically investigates the dynamics of Europeanisation in the ‘Southern Periphery’ by tracing the domestic constellations of ideas, interests and institutions over the course of the 2000s which came to a close with the crisis. Bringing together a multidisciplinary team of leading specialists, the volume focuses on the political economy of public policy reform in Greece, Italy, Malta, Portugal, Spain and Turkey. In order to allow for cross-case comparisons, these original country studies follow a common template framed by what the Editors call the ‘Europeanisation as research programme’. The volume casts empirical light on the causes of the crisis in these cases as well as the past legacies conditioning their responses to the crisis. Its conclusions point to variegated patterns of Europeanisation in different policy areas across Southern Europe. Between 1977 and 1986, Spain underwent a comprehensive tax reform which shaped its fiscal system until today. It was made in connection with the transition to democracy and indeed was understood as a fundamental part of the political change. The book situates the reform both within Spanish history and international trends in tax systems and connects it to the expansion of the welfare state and regional decentralization in Spain. The analysis reveals that the tax system failed to attain progressivity, and significant levels of fraud had a noticeable impact on inequality. Because of this, fiscal redistribution remained limited. In the new political economy of the second globalization, late democratic and fiscal transitioners were unable to emulate the path of the welfare state forerunners.

The A-IC is a useful framework for understanding how exploitative human-animal relations are central to capitalist relations and profit accumulation. ‘A-IC-related-violence’ – killing animals for economic gain – has a ripple effect which results in profound consequences for humans as well. This collection of international scholarship explores topics as varied as how A-IC-related-violence is reproduced and sustained through rapidly changing discursive strategies, ideological architecture, and particular cultural forms that elide and legitimize animal cruelty. Several chapters expose collusion between governments, corporations, and academia as central to maintaining dominance of A-IC-related-violence. Other scholars explore the trouble with making the conditions of “meat” production visible – of de-fetishizing meat commodities. The scholarship critically explores dynamic components of an apparatus that enables A-IC-related-violence and harm but is situated within the capitalist order and charts A-IC-related-violence as the key profit-generating practice in select domains of the A-IC. The book unmasks inherent cruelties in a proliferation of social forms that ultimately reflect a socioeconomic system that centralizes capitalist life characterized by endless growth, competitiveness, and profligate consumption.
