Download or read book Wu Tzu Poems written by The Supreme Master Ching Hai and published by The Supreme Master Ching Hai Publishing Co Ltd.. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 89 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The verses in Wu Tzu Poems were composed during a period spanning from the Author’s initial spiritual quest through the time of Her attainment. “Wu Tzu,” which may be translated as “No Death” or “Life Eternal,” is The Supreme Master Ching Hai’s pen name from that significant phase in Her life. Originally written in Aulacese, all of the poems in this collection have been translated into English by The Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association (SMCHIA) Book Department, with guidance from the Author. To provide readers with a glimpse of The Supreme Master Ching Hai’s genuine appreciation for the art of poetry, we have included an excerpt from the translated poem “The Saint” with editing comments by the Poet. Wu Tzu Poems presents an intimate chronicle of the Poet’s journey in search of the Truth. This undertaking was motivated by Her deep yearning to seek enlightenment for all beings, not just Herself, even at a time when Her life was regarded as highly successful by worldly standards. Each poem marks a step on the passage toward spiritual awakening. But these verses reveal more than just a series of stages; they also reflect the devotion of a great Soul, and as such, touch the true Self or Soul in each of us. We hope that readers who have felt a longing for Home will find a profound echo of their own sentiments within these pages.

Wu Tzu’s poems transcend the preconceived thinking of worldly people, just like a pure lotus amidst the dusty world, a radiant lighthouse in the stormy sea, and a rainbow across a dark cloudy sky. The style of Wu Tzu’s poetry is sometimes soft and gentle as a slow flowing stream, or sometimes vibrant and forceful as a thousand horses racing. Her verses are imbued with graceful and otherworldly qualities. When expressed in the Poet’s simple, conversational words, these verses often belie their profound meanings and pure lyrical beauty. With a refreshing choice of words and harmonious rhythms in Her poems, the Poet has created a beautiful, ethereal world, as well as a poetic style that is at once romantic and splendid. Above all, these poems seem to have been created with total spontaneity, and yet their effect is total enchantment.

Download or read book Chow Chop Suey written by Anne Mendelson and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-29 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chinese food first became popular in America under the shadow of violence against Chinese aliens, a despised racial minority ineligible for United States citizenship. The founding of late-nineteenth-century "chop suey" restaurants that pitched an altered version of Cantonese cuisine to white patrons despite a virulently anti-Chinese climate is one of several pivotal events in Anne Mendelson's thoughtful history of American Chinese food. Chow Chop Suey uses cooking to trace different stages of the Chinese community's footing in the larger white society. Mendelson begins with the arrival of men from the poorest district of Canton Province during the Gold Rush. She describes the formation of American Chinatowns and examines the curious racial dynamic underlying the purposeful invention of hybridized Chinese American food, historically prepared by Cantonese-descended cooks for whites incapable of grasping Chinese culinary principles. Mendelson then follows the eventual abolition of anti-Chinese immigration laws and the many demographic changes that transformed the face of Chinese cooking in America during and after the Cold War. Mendelson concludes with the post-1965 arrival of Chinese immigrants from Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and many regions of mainland China. As she shows, they have immeasurably enriched Chinese cooking in America but tend to form comparatively self-sufficient enclaves in which they, unlike their predecessors, are not dependent on cooking for a white clientele.

Download or read book Unforgettable written by Emily Kaiser Thelin and published by Grand Central Life & Style. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This biographical cookbook tells the story of culinary legend and author of nine award-winning cookbooks, Paula Wolfert, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2013, and shares more than fifty of her most iconic dishes as it explores the relationship between food and memory. The gripping narrative traces the arc of Wolfert's career, from her Brooklyn childhood to her adventures in the farthest corners of the Mediterranean: from nights spent with Beat Generation icons like Allen Ginsberg, to working with the great James Beard; from living in Morocco at a time when it really was like a fourteenth century culture, to bringing international food to America's kitchens through magazines and cookbooks. Anecdotes and adventuresome stories come from Paula's extensive personal archive, interviews with Paula herself, and dozens of interviews with food writers and chefs whom she influenced and influenced her-including Alice Waters,Thomas Keller, Diana Kennedy, André Daguin, and Jacques Pepin. Wolfert's recipes are like no other: each is a new discovery, yielding incredible flavors, using unusual techniques and ingredients, often with an incredible backstory. And the recipes are organized into menus inspired by Wolfert's life and travels--such as James Beard's Easy Entertaining menu; a Moroccan Party; and a Slow and Easy Feast. Unforgettable also addresses Wolfert's acknowledgement of the challenges of living with Alzheimer's, a disease that often means she cannot remember the things she did yesterday, but can still recall in detail what she has cooked over the years. Not accepting defeat easily, Wolfert created a new brain-centric diet, emphasizing healthy meats and fresh vegetables, and her recipes are included here. Unforgettable is a delight for those who know and love Paula Wolfert's recipes, but will be a delicious discovery for those who love food, but have not yet heard of this influential cookbook writer and culinary legend.

Download or read book Scents and Flavors written by and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2020-03-03 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Delectable recipes from the medieval Middle East This popular thirteenth-century Syrian cookbook is an ode to what its anonymous author calls the “greater part of the pleasure of this life,” namely the consumption of food and drink, as well as the fragrances that garnish the meals and the diners who enjoy them. Organized like a meal, Scents and Flavors opens with appetizers and juices and proceeds through main courses, side dishes, and desserts. Apricot beverages, stuffed eggplant, pistachio chicken, coriander stew, melon crepes, and almond pudding are seasoned with nutmeg, rose, cloves, saffron, and the occasional rare ingredient such as ambergris to delight and surprise the banqueter. Bookended by chapters on preparatory perfumes, incenses, medicinal oils, antiperspirant powders, and after-meal hand soaps, this comprehensive culinary journey is a feast for all the senses. With the exception of a few extant Babylonian and Roman texts, cookbooks did not appear on the world literary scene until Arabic speakers began compiling their recipe collections in the tenth century, peaking in popularity in the thirteenth century. Scents and Flavors quickly became a bestseller during this golden age of cookbooks and remains today a delectable read for cultural historians and epicures alike. An English-only edition.
