Book excerpt: Larry Luitjens, A Coach of Influence, is a self-help book for coaches. The Periodic Table lists all the known elements in the universe. This book lists 47 coaching elements that are necessary to be a successful coach, and consequently, to have a successful team. Larry Luitjens is the winningest basketball coach in South Dakota high school basketball history with 748 wins. The book chronicles his life as it was written by one of his assistant coaches, Robert Parsons, and Coach Luitjens' only son, Lance.Coach L says, "I hope that when people remember my career, that I will be remembered more for teaching kids about life, than teaching them how to make a layup or free throw."In the New Testament of the Bible, Luke 2:52 says, "Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man." This verse is the road map for the book. Using Coach Luitjens 47 seasons, the authors use 47 elements (character traits) that are the basis for a team talk, or a team discussion, that deal with the physical, mental, social and spiritual challenges of sport and of life.'It takes a village to raise a child.' is an African proverb that means that the entire community of people must interact with the child for him/her to grow up safely and become a healthy adult. Coach Luitjens was not only a great coach and motivator, a great technician and strategist, but he was also a great recruiter of community members to help with the program. His positive winning attitude was contagious, and it was a magnet as he drew people into the successful basketball culture of small town South Dakota.Coach L also showed great sportsmanship. At a time in South Dakota when racial tensions were high between Native Americans and Whites; Coach L continued to take his basketball teams to the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation when most all White teams refused to go. You'll be introduced to the Native coaches and players that Larry befriended through the game of basketball and therefore become an agent of reconciliation.

Book excerpt: "Emphasizing contact between peoples rather than the discovery of lands, and using archaeological findings as well as eye-witness accounts, David Abulafia explores the social lives of the inhabitants of the Atlantic World, the motivations and tensions of the first transactions and the swift transmutation of wonder to vicious exploitation. Lucid, readable and scrupulous, this is a work of humane engagement with a period in which a tragically violent standard was set for European conquest of the world." --Book Jacket.

Book excerpt: "Walter had mastered the business world at an unaccounted cost to discover in old age and ill-health a degenerative disease that would eventually render his body useless. His mind, however, was trapped as it was, and had an unconventional final act to play to everyone's surprise, including his own. "You're just dying, Walter, Irma, his caretaker said. We all do." "I'm fine with dying, Irma. I'd just like to know when," he replied. But it wasn't true. Walter is a complicated man, captured in the gilded cage of his mansion, tasteful as it is, watching the world, his world, go by without him. As he yearns for his physical power to somehow be magically restored, Walter learns to let go, and let his mind take its course. Visitors with agendas appear to remind him of his life and responsibilities: Walter's ex-wife Polly, a voluptuous handful as he would describe her, Paula, his chip-off-the-old block upright and forthright all-business daughter, Gavin, his immensely attractive and irresponsible son with a very dodgy track record, and the irrepressible daydreams and memories that flood his consciousness with emotions long shunned. While Walter reads the work of the 13th-century Persian poet Rumi, his inner life takes on a new shape, as his body continues to betray him and deteriorate. He says a long, reluctant goodbye while engaging a side to life that has been, until now, unexplored. The natural world in the garden outside his window provides pleasure as he battles pain and new people enter his world to invigorate his last days, including his new physical therapist, Tressie, a woman so enticing and exotic he counts the minutes between visits. Walter, for the first time, seems to be experiencing life as a poet would, even as the inevitable end comes closer. He takes a young artist under his wing, and even dabbles with watercolors, something he would never have done as a boy, let alone an elder. Succession becomes an obsession with Paula as she builds her empire, albeit with Walter's help and his power of attorney, and Gavin tries to demonstrate how far he's come after another stint in rehab. Walter watches them play the game of life, as he becomes a mere observer from the solitude of his stately manor, lost, and possibly found, in his thoughts. Walter's world becomes a fascinating realm where philosophy rules. A cinematic non-linear take and frank examination of the promise of life, even at its end, Bedside Matters concerns us all at one time or another and asks the ultimate question: what matters most?"--

Book excerpt: A Sunday Times Business Book of the Year. Scary Smart will teach you how to navigate the scary and inevitable intrusion of Artificial Intelligence, with an accessible blueprint for creating a harmonious future alongside AI. From Mo Gawdat, the former Chief Business Officer at Google [X] and bestselling author of Solve for Happy. Technology is putting our humanity at risk to an unprecedented degree. This book is not for engineers who write the code or the policy makers who claim they can regulate it. This is a book for you. Because, believe it or not, you are the only one that can fix it. - Mo Gawdat Artificial intelligence is smarter than humans. It can process information at lightning speed and remain focused on specific tasks without distraction. AI can see into the future, predict outcomes and even use sensors to see around physical and virtual corners. So why does AI frequently get it so wrong and cause harm? The answer is us: the human beings who write the code and teach AI to mimic our behaviour. Scary Smart explains how to fix the current trajectory now, to make sure that the AI of the future can preserve our species. This book offers a blueprint, pointing the way to what we can do to safeguard ourselves, those we love, and the planet itself. 'No one ever regrets reading anything Mo Gawdat has written.' - Emma Gannon, author of The Multi-Hyphen Method and host of the podcast Ctrl Alt Delete

Book excerpt: New from a poet whose astonishing images, emotional honesty, and storytelling power holds a singular clarity of vision. An "American wake" is what the Irish call a farewell to those emigrating to the United States. A New England writer equally at home in Ireland, Kerrin McCadden explores family, death and grief, apologies, and all manner of departures in second full-length volume of poetry. In the collection's title poem, McCadden writes: When we are out to sea, we look back to see faces ringing the shore like a fence, those we love in up to their hips in waves, waving goodbye like mad. Included in American Wake are the compelling titles, "My Broken Family," "Weeks After My Brother Overdoses," "One Way to Apologize to a Daughter for Careless Words," "Portrait of the Family as a Definition," and "My Mother Talks to Her Son about Her Heart." This collection by a writer of extraordinary gifts will appeal to readers who believe in the potential of carefully hewn words to unveil our world and our deepest feelings to ourselves. As the acclaimed memoirist Nick Flynn (Another Bullshit Night in Suck City) puts it: "Kerrin McCadden transforms tragedy into myth."
