Book excerpt: Despite two decades of massive strides in research and development on control strategies and their subsequent implementation, most books on permanent magnet motor drives still focus primarily on motor design, providing only elementary coverage of control and converters. Addressing that gap with information that has largely been disseminated only in journals and at conferences, Permanent Magnet Synchronous and Brushless DC Motor Drives is a long-awaited comprehensive overview of power electronic converters for permanent magnet synchronous machines and control strategies for variable-speed operation. It introduces machines, power devices, inverters, and control, and addresses modeling, implementation, control strategies, and flux weakening operations, as well as parameter sensitivity, and rotor position sensorless control. Suitable for both industrial and academic audiences, this book also covers the simulation, low cost inverter topologies, and commutation torque ripple of PM brushless DC motor drives. Simulation of the motor drives system is illustrated with MATLAB® codes in the text. This book is divided into three parts—fundamentals of PM synchronous and brushless dc machines, power devices, inverters; PM synchronous motor drives, and brushless dc motor drives. With regard to the power electronics associated with these drive systems, the author: Explores use of the standard three-phase bridge inverter for driving the machine, power factor correction, and inverter control Introduces space vector modulation step by step and contrasts with PWM Details dead time effects in the inverter, and its compensation Discusses new power converter topologies being considered for low-cost drive systems in PM brushless DC motor drives This reference is dedicated exclusively to PM ac machines, with a timely emphasis on control and standard, and low-cost converter topologies. Download or read book Development and Implementation of High Performance and High Efficiency Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor Drive written by Bhavinkumar Patel and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the motor consumes more than 50% of total electrical energy produced in the world, the efficiency optimization of the motor is a burning issue in terms of saving energy and the environment. In modern days researchers display immense interest in the control of a high performing interior permanent magnet synchronous motors (IPMSM) drive for general industrial applications. The IPMSM is largely used in low and medium power applications such as adjustable speed drives, robotics, aerospace and electric vehicles due to its several advantageous features such as high power density, greater flux weakening capability, high output torque, high power factor, low noise, robustness and high efficiency as compared to the dc motors and induction motors (IM). Nevertheless, its high efficiency characteristics are influenced by applied control strategies. Most of the reported works developed control algorithms for IPMSM to achieve high performance. However, the efficiency optimization of IPMSM, which is one of the important aspects is often ignored. Therefore, in this thesis the efficiency optimization issues is also considered along with high performance control.

Book Synchronous Motor Design and Analysing the Output Characteristics

Download or read book Synchronous Motor Design and Analysing the Output Characteristics written by Mior Ahmad Faiz Riza and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AC Synchronous Motors range in size from sub-fractional horsepower to over 10,000 horsepower. Smaller synchronous motors can be found in household devices such as clocks, timers, fans and cassette players, and as stepper motors in computer disk drives and printers. Larger synchronous motors are used in process industries and drive equipment such as compressors. Large synchronous motors most commonly employ a three-phase system. The smaller AC Synchronous Motors commonly use a single-phase system. Synchronous motor is consists of two parts those are stator and rotor. Stator is stationary part that produces rotating magnetic field and then, the rotor locks into step with rotating magnetic field. This paper focuses on uses the permanent magnet on rotor shaft to produce magnetic field instead of uses slip rings and carbon brush to supply external dc source to the shaft. Permanent magnet synchronous motor is also called brushless because the excitation flux is produced by permanent magnet. Application of neodymium-iron-boron (Nd2Fe14B) and samarium cobalt (Sm1Co5 and Sm2Co17) rare earth magnets results in high torque and power density, efficiency, and controllability, reliability, and ruggedness. The synchronous motor has the same physical stator as induction motor. Then the output of two type of motor can be analyse and compared the result. The output that should be considered is frequency, rpm, torque, hp, losses, and efficiency. From this project we can use the spec of induction motor to guide in design basic principal of synchronous motor with the same spec. Through of this some of development should be done to improve the efficiency and reliability of the motor.

Book Design of High efficiency Rare earth Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Drive System

Download or read book Design of High efficiency Rare earth Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor and Drive System written by Hanzhou Liu and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 107 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Copper loss is the most significant part of all the losses in low speed electric machines. Reducing the copper loss is the key to build highly efficient machine. We use copper wires with the current density lower than traditional design which result in large cross section of the wire and thus reduce the copper loss and improve the efficiency. This also makes thermal management easier and reduces the need to use active cooling methodologies (such as fan, liquid cooling or spray cooling); and hence the overall power density of the whole system (including cooling devices) will not decease much. In traditional machine design, the torque angle is designed to be in the range of 15 to 30 degrees at the rated power and speed. In our high efficiency motor design, we propose to use much lower torque angle of 2 to 15 degrees at the rated power and speed. Such design can effectively increase the overload power handling capability and efficiency. Besides, small torque angle will result in large airgap size and increased thickness of the permanent magnets. Large airgap helps to reduce the windage loss of the machine and generates a lot less mechanical noise based on our design experience. Increased thickness of the permanent magnets helps to avoid the demagnetization. As the technology of advanced micro-controller develops, fast-response power electronic devices can be used in the motor controller. A novel design of DC to AC inverter with the field oriented control scheme and sliding mode observer algorithm for driving the designed motor is developed. The inverter has the capability of driving the motor with its output power at 2 kW.

Book Design of Low power Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor for Use in High density Heat Pump

Download or read book Design of Low power Permanent magnet Synchronous Motor for Use in High density Heat Pump written by David Pierre Jenicek and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analytical model for the functionality of a permanent-magnet synchronous motor is developed. Taking as input a specific geometry, it predicts steady-state losses of a design at an average rate of 0.85 seconds per analysis, orders of magnitude faster than existing finite-element methods. A wide design space is analyzed and, based on the necessary motor profile and manufacturing limits, an optimal design is selected. Subsequently, this motor was fabricated and integrated with a prototype design of a high-density heat pump. This application requires an unusually low motor profile - with the motor width being much (~ 10 x ) larger than its thickness - which has not been explored by other researchers. Furthermore, the design metrics specify a tight upper bound of 33.3 W on available power. Electrical characteristics are modeled and tested to determine optimal phase-excitation waveforms. Finally, power electronics with a sensorless control scheme are designed and incorporated using a custom-designed printed circuit board at an all-inclusive cost of under $50, which is well below the price of typical development control boards used to test prototype motors. Speeds of up to 7000 RPM were observed. At the design point of 5000 RPM, the motor delivered 35 mN-m of torque and drew 23.8 W of power, significantly below the available power budget.

Book Sensorless Electric Drive for Integral Horsepower Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor

Download or read book Sensorless Electric Drive for Integral Horsepower Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is increasingly playing an important role in electric propulsion systems due to its many advantages over competing technologies. For successful implementation of the PMSM rotor position and speed information are required. A resolver or encoder attached to the shaft of the machine usually provides this information Many applications, however, cannot tolerate the use of the position sensor due to space and weight limitations, reliability concerns, or packaging issues. Thus, there has been an intense interest in the development of a so-called postion sensorless drive, where the PMSM stator itself is used as the rotor position sensor. In this work, a previously developed sensorless electric drive technique fl is applied to a high power permanent magnet machine. The sensorless drive hardware implementation is presented in detail. A set of experiments is used to quantify the performance of the sensorless drive approach under a wide variety of operating conditions, and implementation issues and results are discussed. The developed sensorless electric drive serves as a technology demonstrator for future naval applications.
