Book excerpt: The Pacific Rim - a vast area of the globe taking in one third of the world's population and a diversity of economic, climatic and ecological conditions - is also one of the fastest developing. The imbalance between short-term economic gain and longer-term socioeconomic benefit is diminishing the value of the marine resources of the Pacific Rim at a critical point in time. Human interventions and climate change have altered the productivity of the large marine ecosystems (LMEs) of the Pacific and put the region under tremendous stress. Fortunately both the global environmental community and local interests are sensitive to these pressures and keen to assess, monitor and mitigate them through concerted action. Containing contributions from Asian, Australian and North American scientists and policy-makers, particular attention is paid to those LMEs under the greatest pressures, for example the LMEs of the Yellow Sea and South China Seas. The transboundary marine resources within these LMEs are unmanaged and continue to be subjected to unsustainable human activities including overexploitation of fisheries, coastal pollution, and the continuing loss of coastal habitat. Timely and hugely informative, this book contains a wealth of recommendations to guide future management practices for the region. The eight case studies illustrate the emerging trends in changing biomass yields and offer useful insights for future studies. With the initiation of science-based management practices, this book demonstrates how these LMEs can provide a more sustainable source of economic growth, improved food security, and nutritional benefits than is presently being realized.

Recently a distinguished group of 24 scientists argued eloquently that a new Sustainability Science was emerging that was focused on "meeting fundamental human needs while preserving the life support systems of planet Earth". The contributions contained in this volume are at the cutting edge of Sustainability Science and the results presented by the contributors are pertinent to one of the core questions: "How are long-term trends in environment and development, including consumption and population, reshaping nature-society interactions in ways relevant to sustainability?" (Science Vol. 292, 27 April 2001). The case studies demonstrate the utility of an ecosystem-based approach to the assessment and management of biomass yields and species sustainability. Movements toward ecosystem-based management have emerged from the case studies on the initiation of recoveries of several depleted groundfish stocks of the US Northeast Shelf LME; the collapse of the Newfoundland-Labrador Shelf cod; the assessment of physical and biological changes on the Scotian Shelf, West Greenland Shelf, Iceland Shelf LME, and the Faroe Plateau, the North Sea, and the Barents Sea LMEs. Uncertainties, with regard to environmental and human-generated forcing, are addressed in assessment of the states of the Iberian Coastal and Biscay-Celtic LMEs, and in broad-scale studies of the influences at the base of the food chain of climatic variability on the productivity and biodiversity of plankton communities of the North Atlantic. The volume concludes with an insightful perspective on the approaches used and the results reported by the eminent marine scientist and former President of ICES, Professor Gotthilf Hempel.

The NATO Advanced Study Institute (ASI) held in Nice in October 2003 was designed to: (1) provide a discussion forum for the latest developments in the field of environmentally-conscious strategic management of marine environments, and (2) integrate expertise of ecologists, biologists, economists, and managers from European, American, Canadian, Russian, and Israeli organizations in developing a framework for strategic management of marine ecosystems. This benefits human society by moderating the rate of climate change, but also causes unprecedented changes to ocean chemistry. Carbon dioxide taken up by the ocean decreases the pH of the water and leads to a suite of chemical changes collectively known as ocean acidification. The long term consequences of ocean acidification are not known, but are expected to result in changes to many ecosystems and the services they provide to society. Ocean Acidification: A National Strategy to Meet the Challenges of a Changing Ocean reviews the current state of knowledge, explores gaps in understanding, and identifies several key findings. Like climate change, ocean acidification is a growing global problem that will intensify with continued CO2 emissions and has the potential to change marine ecosystems and affect benefits to society. The federal government has taken positive initial steps by developing a national ocean acidification program, but more information is needed to fully understand and address the threat that ocean acidification may pose to marine ecosystems and the services they provide. In addition, a global observation network of chemical and biological sensors is needed to monitor changes in ocean conditions attributable to acidification.
