Book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.

Book High Order Large Eddy Simulation for Shock Boundary Layer Interaction Control by a Micro ramp Vortex Generator

Download or read book High Order Large Eddy Simulation for Shock Boundary Layer Interaction Control by a Micro ramp Vortex Generator written by Chaoqun Liu and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2017-12-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents an implicitly implemented large eddy simulation (ILES) by using the fifth order bandwidth-optimized WENO scheme. The chosen method is applied to make comprehensive studies on ramp flows with and without control at Mach 2.5 and Re=5760. Flow control in the form of microramp vortex generators (MVG) is applied. The results show that a MVG can distinctly reduce the separation zone at the ramp corner and lower the boundary layer shape factor under simulated conditions. A series of new findings about the MVG-ramp flow are obtained, including structures relevant to surface pressure, three-dimensional structures of the re-compression shock waves, a complete surface separation pattern, momentum deficit and a new secondary vortex system. A new mechanism of shock-boundary layer interaction control by MVG associated with a series of vortex rings is also presented. Vortex rings strongly interact with air flow and play an important role in the separation zone reduction. Additionally, readers will learn about the governing equation, boundary condition, high quality grid generation, high order shock capturing scheme and DNS inflow condition in detail. This volume will, therefore, serve as a useful reference for aerospace researchers using LES methods to study shock boundary layer interaction and supersonic flow control.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interaction of a shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer is a central problem in supersonic inlet flows. This work uses numerical and analytical techniques to study shock/turbulence interaction in order to identify and explain factors important in shock/boundary layer interaction. Direct numerical simulation of a normal shock wave with an isotropic turbulent field of vorticity and entropy fluctuations showed that negative upstream correlation between the vorticity and entropy fluctuations enhances the turbulence across the shock. Positive upstream correlation has a suppressing effect. A new numerical method providing excellent high wavenumber resolution while reducing the computational cost was developed. A model with no adjustable constants was developed to study the vortex breakdown resulting from the interaction of canard or forbody vortices with the shock waves in a supersonic inlet flow. Very good agreement with both experiment and computation was obtained. A numerical method to compute shock/turbulence interaction using a conservative form of the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) equations has been developed and validated. LES of the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a normal shock was performed and comparisons with direct numerical simulation (DNS) results were favorable. A new Fortran 90 code has been developed for the computation of shock/turbulence interaction. The code is an improved version of codes used previously in shock/turbulence interaction simulations.

This book was released on 2018-06-11 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1999, Stolz and Adams unveiled a subgrid-scale model for LES based upon approximately inverting (defiltering) the spatial grid-filter operator and termed .the approximate deconvolution model (ADM). Subsequently, the utility and accuracy of the ADM were demonstrated in a posteriori analyses of flows as diverse as incompressible plane-channel flow and supersonic compression-ramp flow. In a prelude to the current paper, a parameterized temporal ADM (TADM) was developed and demonstrated in both a priori and a posteriori analyses for forced, viscous Burger's flow. The development of a time-filtered variant of the ADM was motivated-primarily by the desire for a unifying theoretical and computational context to encompass direct numerical simulation (DNS), large-eddy simulation (LES), and Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulation (RANS). The resultant methodology was termed temporal LES (TLES). To permit exploration of the parameter space, however, previous analyses of the TADM were restricted to Burger's flow, and it has remained to demonstrate the TADM and TLES methodology for three-dimensional flow. For several reasons, plane-channel flow presents an ideal test case for the TADM. Among these reasons, channel flow is anisotropic, yet it lends itself to highly efficient and accurate spectral numerical methods. Moreover, channel-flow has been investigated extensively by DNS, and a highly accurate data base of Moser et.al. exists. In the present paper, we develop a fully anisotropic TADM model and demonstrate its utility in simulating incompressible plane-channel flow at nominal values of Re(sub tau) = 180 and Re(sub tau) = 590 by the TLES method. The TADM model is shown to perform nearly as well as the ADM at equivalent resolution, thereby establishing TLES as a viable alternative to LES. Moreover, as the current model is suboptimal is some respects, there is considerable room to improve TLES.Pruett, C. D. and Thomas, B. C.Langley Research CenterLARGE EDDY SIMULATION; N

Book High Order LES for Supersonic Ramp Flow Control with MVG

Download or read book High Order LES for Supersonic Ramp Flow Control with MVG written by Yonghua Yan and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An implicitly implemented large eddy simulation by using the fifth order bandwidth-optimized WENO scheme is applied to make comprehensive studies on ramp flows with and without control at Mach 2.5 and Re =5760. Flow control in the form of microramp vortex generators (MVG) is applied. The results show that MVG can distinctly reduce the separation zone at the ramp corner and lower the boundary layer shape factor under the condition of the computation. A series of new findings are obtained about the MVG-ramp flow including the threedimensional vortex structure generated by MVG. The mechanism about the formation vortex ring structure and its interaction with shock wave at the ramp corner is deeply studied. Vortex rings strongly interact with the flow and play an important role in the separation zone reduction. It shows that the ring structure does not break down and keeps it topology after penetrating the strong shock wave and the oblique shocks is influenced a lot by the induced flow field from rings. The bump of the 3D shock wave surface is discovered and its mechanism is explained.

Book Large eddy Simulation of Span periodic and Three dimensional Shock turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Large eddy Simulation of Span periodic and Three dimensional Shock turbulent Boundary Layer Interactions written by David Michael Dawson and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock-turbulent boundary layer interaction (STBLI) remains a critical phenomena in the design and performance of supersonic and hypersonic vehicles. This investigation utilizes high-fidelity large-eddy simulation (LES) to better understand the physics involved in compression ramp STBLI. Specifically, streamwise oriented counter-rotating vortices in the recovery region and low frequency unsteadiness of the shock are explored in detail. A parametric variation on ramp angle is performed to explore the behavior of STBLI at a wide range of interaction strengths. An assessment of wall-modeled LES using a simple equilibrium wall-model for compression ramp STBLI at high Reynolds number is performed and deficiencies in the model are explored in detail. A first-of-its-kind LES calculation of a compression ramp STBLI with flow confining aerodynamic fences is performed to explore the three-dimensional aspects of this configuration including changes in the low frequency unsteadiness near the fences.

Book Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Compression Corners and Hypersonic Inlet Flows Using the Rplus2d Code

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Compression Corners and Hypersonic Inlet Flows Using the Rplus2d Code written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-12-29 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A two-dimensional computational code, PRLUS2D, which was developed for the reactive propulsive flows of ramjets and scramjets, was validated for two-dimensional shock-wave/turbulent-boundary-layer interactions. The problem of compression corners at supersonic speeds was solved using the RPLUS2D code. To validate the RPLUS2D code for hypersonic speeds, it was applied to a realistic hypersonic inlet geometry. Both the Baldwin-Lomax and the Chien two-equation turbulence models were used. Computational results showed that the RPLUS2D code compared very well with experimentally obtained data for supersonic compression corner flows, except in the case of large separated flows resulting from the interactions between the shock wave and turbulent boundary layer. The computational results compared well with the experiment results in a hypersonic NASA P8 inlet case, with the Chien two-equation turbulence model performing better than the Baldwin-Lomax model. Book Direct Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Turbulent Ramp and Step Flow

Download or read book Direct Numerical Simulation of Supersonic Turbulent Ramp and Step Flow written by I. Klutchnikov and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Direct numerical simulations of compressible fluid flow are performed for subsonic and supersonic channel flow with two symmetrically backward facing steps and for a supersonic compression ramp flow field. Spatial derivatives are represented by a central scheme of high order difference operators (N=2,4,6,8 ...) that is used together with artificial dissipation of order N.A two-step Richtmyer scheme is employed for time integration. In regions with steep gradients flux-corrected transport (FCT) according to Boris and Book is applied. Preliminary results are presented for Mach number 1.5 in case of the channel flow and further results for Mach number 2.84 in case of the ramp with a ramp angle of 24 degrees.
