Book Computational Optimization of Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Computational Optimization of Internal Combustion Engines written by Yu Shi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-22 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Optimization of Internal Combustion Engines presents the state of the art of computational models and optimization methods for internal combustion engine development using multi-dimensional computational fluid dynamics (CFD) tools and genetic algorithms. Strategies to reduce computational cost and mesh dependency are discussed, as well as regression analysis methods. Several case studies are presented in a section devoted to applications, including assessments of: spark-ignition engines, dual-fuel engines, heavy duty and light duty diesel engines. Through regression analysis, optimization results are used to explain complex interactions between engine design parameters, such as nozzle design, injection timing, swirl, exhaust gas recirculation, bore size, and piston bowl shape. Computational Optimization of Internal Combustion Engines demonstrates that the current multi-dimensional CFD tools are mature enough for practical development of internal combustion engines. It is written for researchers and designers in mechanical engineering and the automotive industry.

Book Large eddy Simulation Modeling of Diesel Sprays

Download or read book Large eddy Simulation Modeling of Diesel Sprays written by Chi-Wei Tsang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this study is to develop/improve physical models for large-eddy simulations of Diesel sprays. The stochastic Kelvin-Helmholtz/Rayleigh-Taylor (KH-RT) atomization and breakup model, the synthetic eddy injection model, the droplet rotation model, and the sub-grid scale (SGS) dispersion model were developed and tested. Using the classical KH-RT model, it was found that simulation results are sensitive to several model parameters such as length and time scales of instability waves. The idea of the stochastic KH-RT model is to determine these parameters stochastically and dynamically. This is an attempt to reduce the sensitivity of the model parameters partly resulting from the incapability of predicting breakup mechanisms other than wave instabilities in the classical KH-RT model. The synthetic eddy injection model predicts fluctuations of the Lagrangian parcel initial velocity. The model attempts to simulate turbulence at the nozzle exit without the need of internal nozzle flow simulations, by superimposing a number of virtual coherent structures. The performance of these two newly developed models was compared to the original ones, namely the classical KH-RT and the cone angle injection models. Two experimental databases, the Engine Combustion Network (ECN) constant-volume sprays and the Engine Research Center optical engine sprays were used to validate the models. A number of simulated quantities such as liquid projected mass density, liquid and vapor penetrations, fuel vapor profiles, ignition delays, and lift-off lengths, were compared against the data. The stochastic KH-RT model improved the prediction of the projected mass density downstream and liquid penetrations in a range of operating conditions (errors within 5 %) without tuning the model constants case by case. The synthetic eddy injection model improved the prediction of vapor penetrations at early stage of injection since the development of instability modes and turbulent transport in the near-nozzle region were better resolved. The model also shows less grid sensitivity. Overall, using these two new models overcomes some limitations in the original models and makes LES as a more predictive tool for Diesel sprays. The droplet rotation model considers droplet force and torque due to relative rotational motions between droplets and gas. Simulation results of the ECN non-vaporizing and vaporizing sprays with and without using the rotation model were compared. It was found that the droplet rotation has negligible effect. This is because the droplet response time scale to the rotational motion is much smaller than that to the translational motion. That is, slip angular velocity approaches to zero much faster, resulting in much smaller rotational force than the drag force. The SGS dispersion model considers the effect of sub-grid motions on Diesel spray dispersion. The model assumes that the SGS dispersion velocity is decomposed into the deterministic and the stochastic parts. The deterministic part is modeled by the approximate deconvolution method and the stochastic part is assumed to be isotropic and Gaussian distributed. It was found that the two model parameters, variance of the Gaussian distribution and turbulence correlation time, have a critical effect on the spatial distribution of droplets with small inertia downstream of the spray. Larger variance or longer turbulence correlation time predicts wider liquid spray angle. However, they have small effect on predicting resolved gas-phase statistics. The primary reason for this is that the motion of high-momentum liquid blobs in the near-nozzle region leading to air entrainment and subsequent gas jet development is little influenced by the SGS dispersion. Moving further downstream a quasi-equilibrium is established between the two phases, resulting in relatively small slip velocities. Therefore, it was found that the spray momentum source term in the gas momentum equation is much smaller than the other terms in the downstream region.

Book Adaptive and Convergent Methods for Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Combustion

Download or read book Adaptive and Convergent Methods for Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Combustion written by Colin Russell Heye and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent past, LES methodology has emerged as a viable tool for modeling turbulent combustion. LES computes the large scale mixing process accurately, thereby providing a better starting point for small-scale models that describe the combustion process. Significant effort has been made over past decades to improve accuracy and applicability of the LES approach to a wide range of flows, though the current conventions often lack consistency to the problems at hand. To this end, the two main objectives of this dissertation are to develop a dynamic transport equation-based combustion model for large- eddy simulation (LES) of turbulent spray combustion and to investigate grid- independent LES modeling for scalar mixing. Long-standing combustion modeling approaches have shown to be suc- cessful for a wide range of gas-phase flames, however, the assumptions required to derive these formulations are invalidated in the presence of liquid fuels and non-negligible evaporation rates. In the first part of this work, a novel ap- proach is developed to account for these evaporation effects and the resulting multi-regime combustion process. First, the mathematical formulation is de- rived and the numerical implementation in a low-Mach number computational solver is verified against one-dimensional and lab scale, both non-reacting and reacting spray-laden flows. In order to clarify the modeling requirements in LES for spray combustion applications, results from a suite of fully-resolved direct numerical simulations (DNS) of a spray laden planar jet flame are fil- tered at a range of length scales. LES results are then validated against two sets of experimental jet flames, one having a pilot and allowing for reduced chemistry modeling and the second requiring the use of detail chemistry with in situ tabulation to reduce the computational cost of the direct integration of a chemical mechanism. The conventional LES governing equations are derived from a low-pass filtering of the Navier-Stokes equations. In practice, the filter used to derive the LES governing equations is not formally defined and instead, it is assumed that the discretization of LES equations will implicitly act as a low-pass filter. The second part of this study investigates an alternative derivation of the LES governing equations that requires the formal definition of the filtering operator, known as explicitly filtered LES. It has been shown that decoupling the filter- ing operation from the underlying grid allows for the isolation of subfilter-scale modeling errors from numerical discretization errors. Specific to combustion modeling are the aggregate errors associated with modeling sub-filter distribu- tions of scalars that are transported by numerical impacted turbulent fields. Quantities of interest to commonly-used combustion models, including sub- filter scalar variance and filtered scalar dissipation rate, are investigated for both homogeneous and shear-driven turbulent mixing.

Book Large Eddy Simulations of Diesel Combustion Chambers

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulations of Diesel Combustion Chambers written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents findings of a systematic study of turbulence predictions for diesel combustion chambers. Particular topics covered include (1) turbulence models for Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes solutions, (2) turbulence scale analysis, (3) efficiency and accuracy improvements of the KIVA codes, (4) large eddy simulations(LES) of in-cylinder turbulence with and without combustion, (5) sub-grid scale models for LES, and (6) combustion models for diffusion flames. The generation of the turbulence during the intake stroke and its subsequent decay during the compression stroke was predicted successfully. The turbulence induced by the piston-bowl geometry alone was investigated. It was found that significant turbulence can be generated during the compression stroke from the re-entry flow in the squish area. Simulations with spray combustion indicated an augmentation of the turbulence intensity corresponding to start of ignition. These findings are in good qualitative agreement with experimental observation. A quantitative analysis of the results in comparison with experiments will require simulations of many cycles to account for cycle-to-cycle variations. This could be possible with use of computers with parallel processors. To this end a successful attempt was made to transform KIVA to run on several parallel platforms including a locally built Beowulf Workstation cluster. initial runs with fixed grids could handle up to four million nodes. This holds promising prospects for future LES of in-cylinder combustion/turbulence in internal combustion engines.

Book Large Eddy Simulation Analysis of Non reacting Sprays Inside a High g Combustor

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation Analysis of Non reacting Sprays Inside a High g Combustor written by Jaime Martinez (master of science in engineering.) and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inter-turbine burners are useful devices for increasing engine power. To reduce the size of these combustion devices, ultra-compact combustor (UCC) concepts are necessary. One such UCC concept is the centrifugal-force based high-g combustor design. Here, a model ultra-compact combustor (UCC) with fuel spray injection is simulated using large eddy simulation (LES) and Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) methodologies to understand mixing and spray dispersion inside centrifugal-based combustion systems. Both non-evaporating and evaporating droplet simulations were carried, as well as the tracking of a passive scalar, to explore this multiphase system. Simulation results show that mixing of fuel and oxidizer is based on a jet-in-crossflow system, with the fuel jet issuing into a circulating oxidizer flow stream. It is seen that a a high velocity vortex-like ring develops in the inner core of the combustor, which has enough momentum to obstruct the path of combustion products. There is minimal fuel droplet and vapor segregation inside the combustor and enhanced turbulent mixing is seen at mid-radius.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Combustion

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Combustion written by Heinz Pitsch and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of this work, new models for describing sub-grid quantities in reactive LES settings were developed. These models included a new model for the sub-filter variance of a conserved scalar, a new method of filtering the G-equation, a resolution-sensitive description of the turbulent burning velocity, and a flamelet formulation valid near premixed fronts. The models were shown to offer improved predictive capability through application to experimental flames. In the second part, a new method to automatically generate skeletal kinetic mechanisms for surrogate fuels, using the directed relation graph method with error propagation, was developed. These mechanisms are guaranteed to match results obtained using detailed chemistry within a user-defined accuracy for any specified target. They can be combined together to produce adequate chemical models for surrogate fuels. A library containing skeletal mechanisms of various accuracies and domains of applicability was assembled.
