Book Large Eddy Simulation of a Supersonic Cavity Flow with an Unstructured Grid Flow Solver

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of a Supersonic Cavity Flow with an Unstructured Grid Flow Solver written by Brian R. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Large Eddy Simulation methods were implemented in a hexahedral based unstructured grid flow solver and tested for the analysis of transonic flow over an open cavity. This approach was developed for efficient application of Computational Fluid Dynamics methods to the highly unsteady flows in a geometrically complex weapons bay. A compressible sub grid scale model was implemented. The compressible flow solver uses an upwind flux difference splitting scheme. A Mach 1.2 flow over an open cavity was simulated. Comparisons of computed and experimental spectra of the sound pressure level at several locations in the cavity are presented. Good agreements between the simulations and test were obtained.

Book excerpt: After Surrey in 1994, Grenoble in 1996, Cambridge in 1999, Enschede in 2001, Munich in 2003 and Poiters in 2005, the 7th Workshop, DLES7, will be held in Trieste, again under the auspices of ERCOFTAC. Following the spirit of the series, the goal of this latest workshop is to establish a state-of-the-art of DNS and LES techniques for the computation and modeling of transitional/turbulent flows covering a broad scope of topics such as aerodynamics, acoustics, combustion, multiphase flows, environment, geophysics and bio-medical applications. This gathering of specialists in the field should once again be a unique opportunity for discussions about the more recent advances in the prediction, understanding and control of turbulent flows in academic or industrial situations.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Three Dimensional High Speed Aerodynamic Flows

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Three Dimensional High Speed Aerodynamic Flows written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An unstructured grid Large Eddy Simulation (LES) methodology has been developed for compressible high speed flows. The filtered compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved on an unstructured grid of tetrahera. The inviscid fluxes are obtained from an exact locally one-dimensional Riemann solver using Godunov's method. The viscous fluxes are obtained using a discrete analog of Gauss' Theorem. The reconstruction is performed using a Least Squares technique. The temporal integration is a Runge-Kutta method. The algorithm is overall second order accurate in space and time. Four flowfields have been computed: decay of isotropic turbulence, channel flow, supersonic flat plate boundary layer and supersonic compression corner. The first and second cases are effectively incompressible, while the third and fourth cases are supersonic (Mach 3). The computed results show close agreement with experiment and Direct Numerical Simulation and validate the unstructured grid LES methodology.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows Using Finite Volume Methods with Structured Unstructured and Zonal Embedded Grids

Download or read book Large Eddy Simulation of Turbulent Flows Using Finite Volume Methods with Structured Unstructured and Zonal Embedded Grids written by Todd Allen Simons and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Structured, unstructured, and zonal embedded grid finite volume formulations have been developed to solve the Favre filtered Navier-Stokes equations for performing large eddy simulation of turbulent flows. These compressible formulations were developed using a dual time stepping approach with low Mach number preconditioning. For the structured and zonal embedded grid formulations, time marching was done with either an explicit Runge-Kutta scheme or an implicit lower-upper symmetric-Gauss-Seidel scheme. For the unstructured formulation, time marching used either an explicit Runge-Kutta scheme or traditional Gauss-Seidel scheme. All codes were parallelized to reduce the overall time required for simulations. These schemes were second-order accurate in space and time. Validations were performed using laminar and turbulent incompressible benchmark flows.

Book Large Eddy Simulation of Supersonic Inlet Flows

Book excerpt: The interaction of a shock wave with a turbulent boundary layer is a central problem in supersonic inlet flows. This work uses numerical and analytical techniques to study shock/turbulence interaction in order to identify and explain factors important in shock/boundary layer interaction. Direct numerical simulation of a normal shock wave with an isotropic turbulent field of vorticity and entropy fluctuations showed that negative upstream correlation between the vorticity and entropy fluctuations enhances the turbulence across the shock. Positive upstream correlation has a suppressing effect. A new numerical method providing excellent high wavenumber resolution while reducing the computational cost was developed. A model with no adjustable constants was developed to study the vortex breakdown resulting from the interaction of canard or forbody vortices with the shock waves in a supersonic inlet flow. Very good agreement with both experiment and computation was obtained. A numerical method to compute shock/turbulence interaction using a conservative form of the Large Eddy Simulation (LES) equations has been developed and validated. LES of the interaction of isotropic turbulence with a normal shock was performed and comparisons with direct numerical simulation (DNS) results were favorable. A new Fortran 90 code has been developed for the computation of shock/turbulence interaction. The code is an improved version of codes used previously in shock/turbulence interaction simulations.

Book Explicitly Filtered Large eddy Simulation

Download or read book Explicitly Filtered Large eddy Simulation written by Sanjeeb T. Bose and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The governing equations for large-eddy simulation (LES) are derived from the application of a low-pass filter to the Navier-Stokes equations. LES has shown to be a tractable method for the computation of high Reynolds number turbulent flows, primarily because the filtration of the Navier-Stokes equations removes the small scales of motion that would otherwise impose prohibitive resolution requirements. The effect of the scales of motion that are smaller than the filter width on the large, resolved scales are then modeled. In practice, the filter used to derive the LES governing equation is not formally defined and instead, it is assumed that the discretization of LES equation will implicitly act as a low-pass filter. This study investigates an alternative derivation of the LES governing equations that requires the formal definition of the filtration operator, known as explicitly filtered LES. It is shown that decoupling the filtering operation from the underlying grid allows for the isolation of subgrid-scale (SGS) modeling errors from numerical discretization errors. In this grid-independent context, it is demonstrated that standard eddy viscosity models are inaccurate at coarse resolutions. By leveraging the definition of the filtering operator, an SGS model is subsequently derived from a low order perturbation of the explicitly filtered governing equations. LES of canonical wall bounded flows (e.g., channels and ducts) at coarse resolutions validate the improved accuracy of the proposed SGS model. Simulations of practical engineering configurations require the ability to handle complex geometries. Previous explicitly filtered LES calculations have been limited to structured grid discretizations because of the difficulty in constructing a low-pass filter on unstructured grids. The explicitly filtered framework and the proposed SGS model are extended for use in unstructured grid environments through the use of differential filters. Unstructured grids also provide the ability to locally increase resolution in regions of the flow where the SGS model is unable to accurately model the stress provided by the unresolved scales of motion. A novel adaptation technique is suggested where the mesh (and/or filter) is refined in regions of the flow where estimates of the SGS fluctuations are largest. An LES of a three-dimensional stalled diffuser is performed to demonstrate the efficacy of the SGS model based mesh refinement criteria and the capabilities of the differential filters on unstructured grids. Lastly, a dynamic wall boundary condition is derived from the differential filter for wall-modeled large-eddy simulation where the near wall turbulence is not resolved. This differential filter based wall model successfully predicts mean dynamics of both wall-bounded flows (channels) and separating flows in complex geometries (airfoil at near-stall conditions) without the prescription of any ad hoc coefficients or RANS/LES hybridization.
