In several flight conditions jet exhaust of the propulsion system interacts with solid surfaces. For example, jet impingement on ground for a rocket lift-off, or interactions influenced by the integration of the engine with the airframe. Such complex applications require consideration of the role of acoustic-surface interactions on the noise generation of the jet and its radiation. Numerical analysis of supersonic jet noise involved in these scenarios is investigated by employing Hybrid Large Eddy Simulation - Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Simulation approach to model turbulence. First, the supersonic impinging jet noise reduction using aqueous injectors is investigated. The technique employed to suppress impingement noise, involves injecting liquid water from the ground surface. The Volume of Fluid model is adopted to simulate the two phase flow. The flow field and acoustic results agree well with the existing experimental data. The possible mechanisms of noise reduction by water injection are investigated. Second, supersonic jet noise reduction by employing the shielding effect of a flat plate parallel to the jet is investigated. The numerical simulations model the shielding effect of the flat plate on the acoustics of supersonic jet, and results agree with the corresponding experimental data. The physical mechanisms involved in the flow-surface interactions are investigated. With understanding these mechanisms, a slightly wavy plate is proposed including theoretical background to determine the parameters needed for the way wall to provide acoustic reduction efficiently. Results show that the proposed wavy shield can effectively reduce both the level and extent of the jet noise source as compared to that of a flat shield."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: "An application of an existing industry tool to study supersonic jets impinging on flat plates is shown. This industry tool is the commercially available CFD package ANSYS FLUENT. The supersonic jet studied is perfectly expanded with a Mach number of 1.5, and it impinges on a flat surface 4 nozzle throat diameters from the jet exit. All turbulence modeling is done using a hybrid RANS/LES technique known as Delayed Detached Eddy Simulation (DDES). A transient solution is calculated using the pressure-based coupled solver formulation with the second-order bounded central-upwind spatial discretization and second-order implicit time marching scheme. Flow features like the stagnation bubble, wall jet and feedback mechanism were studied using countour plots. An examination was also done into the mean flow fields of the jet core. The acoustics of the case were studied using two different techniques, direct measurements and the use of a acoustics source surface method. Using limited computational power, reasonable agreement between simulation and experimental data was found for the flow-field and acoustics. Thus, it was demonstrated that ANSYS FLUENT can be used for this problem to provide good preliminary results in an industry setting with limited computational power"--Leaf vi.

Also. the advances in computers have made direct numerical simulation possible at Low-Reynolds numbers and large-eddy simulation possible at high Reynolds numbers. This made first-principles prediction of turbulence-generated noise feasible. Therefore, this book aims at presenting a graduate-level introductory study of turbulence while accounting for such recent views of concern to researchers. This book is an outgrowth oflecture notes on the subject offered to graduate students in engineering. The book should be of interest to research engineers and graduatestudents in science and engineering. The theoretical basis presented is sufficient not only for studying the specialized literature on turbulence but also for theoretical investigations on the subject.

The need to assuage the adverse impact of jet noise on human health has led to increased interest in jet noise source identification and noise level minimization/mitigation. Most previous works on common round supersonic jets have primarily explored the ideal case of simple, perfectly expanded jet configurations. In real world scenarios however, many of these simplifications do not hold. Two such considerations are examined in this work. The first is a simple configuration operating at complex operating conditions, specifically an imperfect expansion i.e. where the jets are operating at off-design conditions. The second concerns a complex configuration at simple conditions: specifically two jets (twin-jets such as those on fighter aircraft) operating in close proximity to each other. In this work, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) based high-fidelity computations are used to understand the dynamics of imperfectly expanded and twin-jets respectively, with the following objectives: 1) Identify the impact of active flow control techniques on the plume dynamics and acoustic characteristics of underexpanded jets, and 2) Investigate the interaction dynamics of the twin-jet plumes and study its associated sound field which exhibits complex radiation characteristics.
