Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This award-winning book continues to resonate with teachers and inspire their teaching because it focuses on the joy of reading and how it can engage and even transform readers. In a time of next generation standards that emphasize higher-order strategies, text complexity, and the reading of nonfiction, “You Gotta BE the Book” continues to help teachers meet new challenges including those of increasing cultural diversity. At the core of Wilhelm’s foundational text is an in-depth account of what highly motivated adolescent readers actually do when they read, and how to help struggling readers take on those same stances and strategies. His work offers a robust model teachers can use to prepare students for the demands of disciplinary understanding and for literacy in the real world. The Third Edition includes new commentaries and tips for using visual techniques, drama and action strategies, think-aloud protocols, and symbolic story representation/reading manipulatives. Book Features: A data-driven theory of literature and literary reading as engagement.A case for undertaking teacher research with students. An approach for using drama and visual art to support readers’ comprehension. Guidance for assisting students in the use of higher-order strategies of reading (and writing) as required by next generation standards like the Common Core.Classroom interventions to help all students, especially reluctant ones, become successful readers. “This book points the way for us to cast our students as experts and collaborators in the educational enterprise.” —From the Foreword by Michael W. Smith, Temple University, College of Education “Simply put, it is a classic—timeless in its basic approach and yet full of relevant ideas and strategies for the era of Common Core.” —Deborah Appleman, Carleton College On the Second Edition: “This important book remains on the must-read list for literacy teachers working with adolescent learners.” —CHOICE “I hope this book is read and considered by all the stakeholders who can make a difference in education by following Wilhelm's lead of improving instruction to enhance students’ lives.” —Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy

Book The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film

Download or read book The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film written by Drewey Wayne Gunn and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2013 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film (2005), scholar Drewey Wayne Gunn examined the history of gay detectives beginning with the first recognized gay novel, The Heart in Exile, which appeared in 1953. In the years since the original edition's publication, hundreds of novels and short stories in this sub-genre have been produced, and Gunn has unearthed many additional representations previously unrecorded. In this new edition, Gunn provides an overview of milestones in the development of gay detectives over the last several decades. Also included in this volume is an annotated list of novels, short stories, plays, graphic novels, comic strips, films, and television series with gay detectives, gay sleuths of secondary importance, and non-sleuthing gay policemen. The most complete listing available--including the only listing of early gay pulp novels, present-day male-to-male romances, and erotic films--this new edition brings the work up to date with publications missed in the first edition, particularly cross-genre mysteries, early pulps, and some hard-to-find volumes. The Gay Male Sleuth in Print and Film: A History and Annotated Bibliography lists all printed works in English (including translations) presently known to include gay detectives (such as amateur sleuths, police detectives, private investigators, and investigative reporters), from the 1929 play Rope until the present day. It includes all films in English, subtitled or dubbed, from the screen version of Rope in 1948 and the launch of the independent film Spy on the Fly in 1966 through the end of 2011. Complete with two appendices--a bibliography of sources and a list of Lambda Literary Awards--and indexes of titles, detectives, and actors, this extensively revised and updated reference will prove invaluable to mystery collectors, researchers, aficionados of the subgenre, and those devoted to GLBTQ studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three titles in the PennDutch Amish Bed & Breakfast Mystery Series in a box set! TOO MANY CROOKS SPOIL THE BROTH This debut mystery introduces Magdalena Yoder, prim, proper, and persnickety proprietor of the PennDutch Inn, where guests luxuriate in the true “Amish experience,” (read: doing Magdalena’s chores and paying top dollar for the opportunity!). What at first seems to be a horrible accident (and insurance nightmare for Magdalena!) could turn out to be a much more sinister event; and when another mishap occurs, Magdalena is certain there is a killer in her group – and it’s up to her to sniff out the culprit...before the world’s most incompetent town sheriff throws her in jail! Readers will delight in this laugh-out-loud cozy mystery debut – and relish the country cooking recipes included. PARSLEY, SAGE, ROSEMARY AND CRIME Magdalena Yoder, chaste and abstemious proprietor of the Pennsylvania Dutch Inn, agrees to let a Hollywood crew film at the inn – for an exorbitant price, of course. But when the assistant director is found pinned to a barn post with a farming tool, dimwitted local police chief, Marvin Stoltzfus fingers Magdalena as his prime suspect. Now it’s time for Magdalena to use her extraordinary Amish sleuthing skills to reveal the real killer – before another Hollywood hellion goes belly up and turns Magdalena’s charming PennDutch Inn into a grisly horror flick! NO USE DYING OVER SPILLED MILK Magdalena Yoder, Amish-Mennonite proprietor of the Pennsylvania Dutch Inn, travels to Farmersburg, Ohio for the funeral of her second cousin (twice removed) who had the unfortunate luck of drowning in a vat of milk...and, as Magdalena knows, Amish men just don’t go swimming in milk in the middle of February. Something’s definitely rotten in Farmersburg... When another relative is found belly up, Magdalena puts her (impressive, but attractive nonetheless, thank you very much) nose to the scent and discovers that a vicious cheese rivalry may be the cause of all this mayhem! In between keeping tabs on her saucy sister, Susannah, avoiding her sardine-loving host and spending time with her new boyfriend, Aaron Miller (a.k.a. Pooky Bear), Magdalena must find the killer...before more Yoders bite the dust!

Book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised

Download or read book Mystery Women Volume Three Revised written by Colleen Barnett and published by Sourcebooks, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-12-31 with total page 1090 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like other fictional characters, female sleuths may live in the past or the future. They may represent current times with some level of reality or shape their settings to suit an agenda. There are audiences for both realism and escapism in the mystery novel. It is interesting, however, to compare the fictional world of the mystery sleuth with the world in which readers live. Of course, mystery readers do not share one simplistic world. They live in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as do the female heroines in the books they read. They may choose a book because it has a familiar background or because it takes them to places they long to visit. Readers may be rich or poor; young or old; conservative or liberal. So are the heroines. What incredible choices there are today in mystery series! This three-volume encyclopedia of women characters in the mystery novel is like a gigantic menu. Like a menu, the descriptions of the items that are provided are subjective. Volume 3 of Mystery Women as currently updated adds an additional 42 sleuths to the 500 plus who were covered in the initial Volume 3. These are more recently discovered sleuths who were introduced during the period from January 1, 1990 to December 31, 1999. This more than doubles the number of sleuths introduced in the 1980s (298 of whom were covered in Volume 2) and easily exceeded the 347 series (and some outstanding individuals) described in Volume 1, which covered a 130-year period from 1860-1979. It also includes updates on those individuals covered in the first edition; changes in status, short reviews of books published since the first edition through December 31, 2008.

Hart Magdalena Yoder is (finally!) getting married, and nothing is going to spoil her wedding; not the man-of-her-dreams’ loopy relatives, nor the twenty-year-old barrel of genuine Pennsylvania Dutch sauerkraut from her future father-in-law, which is not Mag’s idea of a great wedding present. Especially when it contains a body! Of course, Magdalena recognizes the victim, who’s as well-preserved as a gherkin: It's her fiancé's cousin Sarah, who's been missing for 20 years. Magdalena's inn is filled with the eccentric aunts and crazy uncles of the deceased...And Magdalena suspects one of them is the killer. Now she’s in a pickle, blowing the lid off a mystery two decades old, and digging up a scandal that may shake her Amish hometown to the core and send her to a funeral—her own—instead of her wedding day!

Book The Life and Times of Mickey Rooney

Download or read book The Life and Times of Mickey Rooney written by Richard A. Lertzman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-20 with total page 624 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A definitive biography of the iconic actor and Hollywood legend Mickey Rooney (1920-2014) and his extravagant, sometimes tawdry life, drawing on exclusive interviews, and with those who knew him best, including his heretofore unknown mistress of sixty years. “I lived like a rock star,” said Mickey Rooney. “I had all I ever wanted, from Lana Turner and Joan Crawford to every starlet in Hollywood, and then some. They were mine to have. Ava [Gardner] was the best. I screwed up my life. I pissed away millions. I was #1, the biggest star in the world.” Mickey Rooney began his career almost a century ago as a one-year-old performer in burlesque and stamped his mark in vaudeville, silent films, talking films, Broadway, and television. He acted in his final motion picture just weeks before he died at age ninety-three. He was an iconic presence in movies, the poster boy for American youth in the idyllic small-town 1930s. Yet, by World War II, Mickey Rooney had become frozen in time. A perpetual teenager in an aging body, he was an anachronism by the time he hit his forties. His child-star status haunted him as the gilded safety net of Hollywood fell away, and he was forced to find support anywhere he could, including affairs with beautiful women, multiple marriages, alcohol, and drugs. In The Life and Times of Mickey Rooney, authors Richard A. Lertzman and William J. Birnes present Mickey’s nearly century-long career within the context of America's changing entertainment and social landscape. They chronicle his life story using little-known interviews with the star himself, his children, his former coauthor Roger Kahn, collaborator Arthur Marx, and costar Margaret O’Brien. This Old Hollywood biography presents Mickey Rooney from every angle, revealing the man Laurence Olivier once dubbed “the best there has ever been.”
