Book Asian Comics

    Book Details:
  • Author : John A. Lent
  • Publisher : Univ. Press of Mississippi
  • Release : 2015-01-05
  • ISBN : 1626742944
  • Pages : 356 pages

Download or read book Asian Comics written by John A. Lent and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2015-01-05 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grand in its scope, Asian Comics dispels the myth that, outside of Japan, the continent is nearly devoid of comic strips and comic books. Relying on his fifty years of Asian mass communication and comic art research, during which he traveled to Asia at least seventy-eight times and visited many studios and workplaces, John A. Lent shows that nearly every country had a golden age of cartooning and has experienced a recent rejuvenation of the art form. As only Japanese comics output has received close and by now voluminous scrutiny, Asian Comics tells the story of the major comics creators outside of Japan. Lent covers the nations and regions of Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, the Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Organized by regions of East, Southeast, and South Asia, Asian Comics provides 178 black-and-white illustrations and detailed information on comics of sixteen countries and regions—their histories, key creators, characters, contemporary status, problems, trends, and issues. One chapter harkens back to predecessors of comics in Asia, describing scrolls, paintings, books, and puppetry with humorous tinges, primarily in China, India, Indonesia, and Japan. The first overview of Asian comic books and magazines (both mainstream and alternative), graphic novels, newspaper comic strips and gag panels, plus cartoon/humor magazines, Asian Comics brims with facts, fascinating anecdotes, and interview quotes from many pioneering masters, as well as younger artists.

Book The Comics World

Download or read book The Comics World written by Benjamin Woo and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-07-29 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contributions by Bart Beaty, T. Keith Edmunds, Eike Exner, Christopher J. Galdieri, Ivan Lima Gomes, Charles Hatfield, Franny Howes, John A. Lent, Amy Louise Maynard, Shari Sabeti, Rob Salkowitz, Kalervo A. Sinervo, Jeremy Stoll, Valerie Wieskamp, Adriana Estrada Wilson, and Benjamin Woo The Comics World: Comic Books, Graphic Novels, and Their Publics is the first collection to explicitly examine the production, circulation, and reception of comics from a social-scientific point of view. Designed to promote interdisciplinary dialogue about theory and methods in comics studies, this volume draws on approaches from fields as diverse as sociology, political science, history, folklore, communication studies, and business, among others, to study the social life of comics and graphic novels. Taking the concept of a “comics world”—that is, the collection of people, roles, and institutions that “produce” comics as they are—as its organizing principle, the book asks readers to attend to the contexts that shape how comics move through societies and cultures. Each chapter explores a specific comics world or particular site where comics meet one of their publics, such as artists and creators; adaptors; critics and journalists; convention-goers; scanners; fans; and comics scholars themselves. Through their research, contributors demonstrate some of the ways that people participate in comics worlds and how the relationships created in these spaces can provide different perspectives on comics and comics studies. Moving beyond the page, The Comics World explores the complexity of the lived reality of the comics world: how comics and graphic novels matter to different people at different times, within a social space shared with others.

Book Social Interaction and Discourse Structures

Download or read book Social Interaction and Discourse Structures written by Gregory R. Guy and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a two-volume collection of original research papers designed to reflect the breadth and depth of the impact that William Labov has had on linguistic science. Four areas of 'Labovian' linguistics are addressed: First is the study of variation and change; the papers in sections I and II of the first volume take this as their central theme, with a focus on either the social context and uses of language (I) or on the the internal linguistic dynamics of variation and change (II). The study of African American English, and other language varieties in the Americas spoken by people of African descent and influenced by their linguistic heritage, is the subject of the papers in section III of the first volume. The third theme is the study of discourse; the papers in section I of the second volume develop themes in Labovian linguistics that go back to Labov's work on narrative, descriptive, and therapeutic discourse. Fourth is the emphasis on language use, the search for discursive, interactive, and meaningful determinants of the complexity in human communication. Papers with these themes appear in section II of the second volume.

Book excerpt: It is meant literally! Join the group of five who get lost in a Warawiri, back-and-forth time travel journey into the Middle Age kingdom of Demak Jepara, in the island of Java in the sixteenth-century CE, and explore the amazing experiences of five hundred years ago in a mystical tropical kingdom. An East Timorese businessman, a Japanese stockbroker, a German music anthropologist, and a young Javanese executive lady are in the possession of heirlooms of the Middle Age Javanese kingdom, and they are transported by the mystical powers five centuries back because the heirlooms need to be spiritually cleansed. The president of the United States was also among the victims of the time travel into the past. And if you do not possess any ancient heirlooms, then just join the ninety-thousand spectator crowds on the soccer championship in the Jakarta Senayan gigantic stadium, who are also transported like a giant flying saucer five centuries into the past. The only way to rescue the victims back into the present is by holding a mystical ceremony from eight skyscrapers rooftops surrounding the stadium by eight spiritual masters forming the Mandala star configurations, playing the sacred Javanese gending symphony, the Harmony of Spirit in the Sky, led by their leader from the location of the lost stadium, using a slate board as his iPad. The events are all covered by Matra TV, a private TV broadcast company. A colorful laser light show in the sky from the skyscrapers rooftops, a rumor of an affair involving the president of the United States and the Javanese executive, and an exotic, mystical witchcraft ceremony and village life in remote jungle of Borneo add to your colorful journey into the past.

Book How Do We Look

    Book Details:
  • Author : Fatimah Tobing Rony
  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2021-10-18
  • ISBN : 147802190X
  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book How Do We Look written by Fatimah Tobing Rony and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2021-10-18 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In How Do We Look? Fatimah Tobing Rony draws on transnational images of Indonesian women as a way to theorize what she calls visual biopolitics—the ways visual representation determines which lives are made to matter more than others. Rony outlines the mechanisms of visual biopolitics by examining Paul Gauguin’s 1893 portrait of Annah la Javanaise—a trafficked thirteen-year-old girl found wandering the streets of Paris—as well as US ethnographic and documentary films. In each instance, the figure of the Indonesian woman is inextricably tied to discourses of primitivism, savagery, colonialism, exoticism, and genocide. Rony also focuses on acts of resistance to visual biopolitics in film, writing, and photography. These works, such as Rachmi Diyah Larasati’s The Dance that Makes You Vanish, Vincent Monnikendam’s Mother Dao (1995), and the collaborative films of Nia Dinata, challenge the naturalized methods of seeing that justify exploitation, dehumanization, and early death of people of color. By theorizing the mechanisms of visual biopolitics, Rony elucidates both its violence and its vulnerability.

Book Dynamics Of Governing It Innovation In Singapore A Casebook

Download or read book Dynamics Of Governing It Innovation In Singapore A Casebook written by Gary S C Pan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on issues in the management and governance of IT innovation, this book links concepts and theories of academic learning to actual real-life scenarios from the successful experiences of public and private sector organisations in Singapore. While there is little disagreement that innovation is the fundamental source of value creation and competitive advantage, investment in IT to support and foster innovation by no means guarantees success. There are various issues to be considered, such as the question of processes and structures that need to be in place in order to maximise value, how to leverage IT innovation to formulate constantly evolving strategies so as to seize emergent opportunities, and how to overcome challenges faced in implementation, amongst others. Suitable as a complement to main texts for academic courses on accounting information systems and management information systems, as well as a guide for business professionals in this field, the book provides a concise introduction on the subject through the use of case studies and teaching notes, affording a broad perspective on the most important issues.

Book Re Imagining Creative Cities in Twenty First Century Asia

Download or read book Re Imagining Creative Cities in Twenty First Century Asia written by Xin Gu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-20 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book responds to the lack of Asian representation in creative cities literature. It aims to use the creative cities paradigm as part of a wider process involving first, a rapid de-industrialisation in Asia that has left a void for new development models, resulting in a popular uptake of cultural economies in Asian cities; and second, the congruence and conflicts of traditional and modern cultural values leading to a necessary re-interpretation and re-imagination of cities as places for cultural production and cultural consumption. Focusing on the ‘Asian century’, it seeks to recognise and highlight the rapid rise of these cities and how they have stepped up to the challenge of transforming and regenerating themselves. The book aims to re-define what it means to be an Asian creative city and generate more dialogue and new debate around different urban issues.

This book was released on 2023-12-31 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access book. The ultimate goal of physical education and physical activity promotion is to facilitate and encourage individuals to engage in a physically active lifestyle. It can be achieved by improving physical literacy, which is defined as ‘the ability of individuals to move with competence and confidence in a wide variety of physical activities, in multiple environments that benefit the healthy development and overall quality of life of the whole person.’ Prior to developing strategies for improving physical literacy, its concept needs to be defined and conceptualized because it involves complex interplays of individuals’ knowledge and understanding of physical activity as well as individuals’ motivation, self-confidence and physical competence for being physically active for life. The 6th Yogyakarta International Seminar on Health, Physical Education, and Sports Science (YISHPESS 2023) respond to this issue by organising the conference which carries a theme of "Lessening the prevalence of sedentary lifestyles through the use of physical education resources”. The Conference invites reputable international scholars and experts closely working in physical literacy, physical education and sports science in general.
