Book Distribution Theory and Transform Analysis

Download or read book Distribution Theory and Transform Analysis written by A.H. Zemanian and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distribution theory, a relatively recent mathematical approach to classical Fourier analysis, not only opened up new areas of research but also helped promote the development of such mathematical disciplines as ordinary and partial differential equations, operational calculus, transformation theory, and functional analysis. This text was one of the first to give a clear explanation of distribution theory; it combines the theory effectively with extensive practical applications to science and engineering problems. Based on a graduate course given at the State University of New York at Stony Brook, this book has two objectives: to provide a comparatively elementary introduction to distribution theory and to describe the generalized Fourier and Laplace transformations and their applications to integrodifferential equations, difference equations, and passive systems. After an introductory chapter defining distributions and the operations that apply to them, Chapter 2 considers the calculus of distributions, especially limits, differentiation, integrations, and the interchange of limiting processes. Some deeper properties of distributions, such as their local character as derivatives of continuous functions, are given in Chapter 3. Chapter 4 introduces the distributions of slow growth, which arise naturally in the generalization of the Fourier transformation. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the convolution process and its use in representing differential and difference equations. The distributional Fourier and Laplace transformations are developed in Chapters 7 and 8, and the latter transformation is applied in Chapter 9 to obtain an operational calculus for the solution of differential and difference equations of the initial-condition type. Some of the previous theory is applied in Chapter 10 to a discussion of the fundamental properties of certain physical systems, while Chapter 11 ends the book with a consideration of periodic distributions. Suitable for a graduate course for engineering and science students or for a senior-level undergraduate course for mathematics majors, this book presumes a knowledge of advanced calculus and the standard theorems on the interchange of limit processes. A broad spectrum of problems has been included to satisfy the diverse needs of various types of students.

Download or read book Distribution Theory written by Gerrit Dijk and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-03-22 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of distributions has numerous applications and is extensively used in mathematics, physics and engineering. There is however relatively little elementary expository literature on distribution theory. This book is intended as an introduction. Starting with the elementary theory of distributions, it proceeds to convolution products of distributions, Fourier and Laplace transforms, tempered distributions, summable distributions and applications. The theory is illustrated by several examples, mostly beginning with the case of the real line and then followed by examples in higher dimensions. This is a justified and practical approach, it helps the reader to become familiar with the subject. A moderate number of exercises are added. It is suitable for a one-semester course at the advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate level or for self-study.

Book Distributions and the Boundary Values of Analytic Functions

Download or read book Distributions and the Boundary Values of Analytic Functions written by E. J. Beltrami and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-12 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributions and the Boundary Values of Analytic Functions focuses on the tools and techniques of distribution theory and the distributional boundary behavior of analytic functions and their applications. The publication first offers information on distributions, including spaces of testing functions, distributions of finite order, convolution and regularization, and testing functions of rapid decay and distributions of slow growth. The text then examines Laplace transform, as well as Laplace transforms of distributions with arbitrary support. The manuscript ponders on distributional boundary values of analytic functions, including causal and passive operators, analytic continuation and uniqueness, boundary value theorems and generalized Hilbert transforms, and representation theorems for half-plane holomorphic functions with S' boundary behavior. The publication is a valuable source of data for researchers interested in distributions and the boundary values of analytic functions.

Book An Extension of the Laplace Transform to Schwartz Distributions

Download or read book An Extension of the Laplace Transform to Schwartz Distributions written by Douglas B. Price and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new characterization of the Laplace transform is developed which extends the transform to the Schwartz distributions. The class of distributions includes, in addition to all ordinary functions, the impulse functions and other singular functions which occur as solutions to ordinary and partial differential equations. The standard theorems on analyticity, uniqueness, and invertibility of the transform are proved by using the new characterization as the definition of the Laplace transform. The new definition uses sequences of linear transformations on the space of distributions in a manner suggested by a paper of E. Gesztelyi which extended the Laplace transform to another class of generalized functions, the Mikusinski operators. It is shown that the new sequential definition of the transform is equivalent to Schwartz' extension of the ordinary Laplace transform to distributions but, in contrast to Schwartz' definition, does not use the distributional Fourier transform. Several theorems concerning the particular linear transformations used to define the Laplace transforms are proved. All the results proved in one dimension are extended to the n-dimensional case, but proofs are presented only for those situations that require methods different from their one-dimensional analogs.

Book Distributions Fourier Transforms and Some of Their Applications to Physics

Download or read book Distributions Fourier Transforms and Some of Their Applications to Physics written by Thomas Schcker and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1991 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, distributions are introduced via sequences of functions. This approach due to Temple has two virtues: It only presupposes standard calculus. It allows to justify manipulations necessary in physical applications. The Fourier transform is defined for functions and generalized to distributions, while the Green function is defined as the outstanding application of distributions. Using Fourier transforms, the Green functions of the important linear differential equations in physics are computed. Linear algebra is reviewed with emphasis on Hilbert spaces. The author explains how linear differential operators and Fourier transforms naturally fit into this frame, a point of view that leads straight to generalized fourier transforms and systems of special functions like spherical harmonics, Hermite, Laguerre, and Bessel functions.

Book A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms

Download or read book A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms written by Robert S. Strichartz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2003 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important book provides a concise exposition of the basic ideas of the theory of distribution and Fourier transforms and its application to partial differential equations. The author clearly presents the ideas, precise statements of theorems, and explanations of ideas behind the proofs. Methods in which techniques are used in applications are illustrated, and many problems are included. The book also introduces several significant recent topics, including pseudodifferential operators, wave front sets, wavelets, and quasicrystals. Background mathematical prerequisites have been kept to a minimum, with only a knowledge of multidimensional calculus and basic complex variables needed to fully understand the concepts in the book.A Guide to Distribution Theory and Fourier Transforms can serve as a textbook for parts of a course on Applied Analysis or Methods of Mathematical Physics, and in fact it is used that way at Cornell.

Book Problems in Distributions and Partial Differential Equations

Download or read book Problems in Distributions and Partial Differential Equations written by C. Zuily and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1988-04-01 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of this book is to provide a comprehensive introduction to the theory of distributions, by the use of solved problems. Although written for mathematicians, it can also be used by a wider audience, including engineers and physicists. The first six chapters deal with the classical theory, with special emphasis on the concrete aspects. The reader will find many examples of distributions and learn how to work with them. At the beginning of each chapter the relevant theoretical material is briefly recalled. The last chapter is a short introduction to a very wide and important field in analysis which can be considered as the most natural application of distributions, namely the theory of partial differential equations. It includes exercises on the classical differential operators and on fundamental solutions, hypoellipticity, analytic hypoellipticity, Sobolev spaces, local solvability, the Cauchy problem, etc.

Book An Introduction to Laplace Transforms and Fourier Series

Download or read book An Introduction to Laplace Transforms and Fourier Series written by P.P.G. Dyke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This introduction to Laplace transforms and Fourier series is aimed at second year students in applied mathematics. It is unusual in treating Laplace transforms at a relatively simple level with many examples. Mathematics students do not usually meet this material until later in their degree course but applied mathematicians and engineers need an early introduction. Suitable as a course text, it will also be of interest to physicists and engineers as supplementary material.

Book An Introduction to Distributions

Download or read book An Introduction to Distributions written by Aamer Haque and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-12 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distributions (or generalized functions) allow the possibility of taking derivatives of discontinuousfunctions. There are also distributions which are not generated by ordinary functions. The Dirac deltafunction is an example of a distribution which is not an ordinary function. Unfortunately, most physicsand engineering texts treat it as an ordinary function and skip the formal mathematical definition. Onthe other hand, math books often do not include applications. This book provides a mathematical introduction to the theory of distributions. Most of the importanttheorems are proved. Topics include: Schwartz distributions, tempered distributions, measures, Fouriertransforms, and Laplace transforms. The theory is applied to simple examples in differential equations, probability theory, kinetics, and electrostatics. This graduate level text book is intended for students and researchers in math, science, and engineering. The reader is assumed to have a background in advanced calculus or real analysis

Book Introduction to the Laplace Transform

Download or read book Introduction to the Laplace Transform written by Peter K.F. Kuhfittig and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give an introduction to the Laplace transform on the undergraduate level. The material is drawn from notes for a course taught by the author at the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Based on classroom experience, an attempt has been made to (1) keep the proofs short, (2) introduce applications as soon as possible, (3) concentrate on problems that are difficult to handle by the older classical methods, and (4) emphasize periodic phenomena. To make it possible to offer the course early in the curriculum (after differential equations), no knowledge of complex variable theory is assumed. However, since a thorough study of Laplace. transforms requires at least the rudiments of this theory, Chapter 3 includes a brief sketch of complex variables, with many of the details presented in Appendix A. This plan permits an introduction of the complex inversion formula, followed by additional applications. The author has found that a course taught three hours a week for a quarter can be based on the material in Chapters 1, 2, and 5 and the first three sections of Chapter 7. If additional time is available (e.g., four quarter-hours or three semester-hours), the whole book can be covered easily. The author is indebted to the students at the Milwaukee School of Engineering for their many helpful comments and criticisms.

Book Introduction to the Theory and Application of the Laplace Transformation

Download or read book Introduction to the Theory and Application of the Laplace Transformation written by G. Doetsch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 335 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In anglo-american literature there exist numerous books, devoted to the application of the Laplace transformation in technical domains such as electrotechnics, mechanics etc. Chiefly, they treat problems which, in mathematical language, are governed by ordi nary and partial differential equations, in various physically dressed forms. The theoretical foundations of the Laplace transformation are presented usually only in a simplified manner, presuming special properties with respect to the transformed func tions, which allow easy proofs. By contrast, the present book intends principally to develop those parts of the theory of the Laplace transformation, which are needed by mathematicians, physicists a,nd engineers in their daily routine work, but in complete generality and with detailed, exact proofs. The applications to other mathematical domains and to technical prob lems are inserted, when the theory is adequately· developed to present the tools necessary for their treatment. Since the book proceeds, not in a rigorously systematic manner, but rather from easier to more difficult topics, it is suited to be read from the beginning as a textbook, when one wishes to familiarize oneself for the first time with the Laplace transforma tion. For those who are interested only in particular details, all results are specified in "Theorems" with explicitly formulated assumptions and assertions. Chapters 1-14 treat the question of convergence and the mapping properties of the Laplace transformation. The interpretation of the transformation as the mapping of one function space to another (original and image functions) constitutes the dom inating idea of all subsequent considerations.
