Book excerpt: Founded by Civil War veteran William Lansing Taylor, Lansing is home to a population quickly approaching 11,000 residents. It is also home to the Lansing Correctional Facility (formerly the Kansas State Penitentiary), the oldest prison in Kansas. Designed by Erasmus Carr, architect of the Kansas State Capitol, the building has stood watch over the area for more than 140 years. As one will find, Lansing and the prison have grown together and mutually benefitted each other. Lansing is also home to Mount Muncie Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in the state. It is the resting place of several famous people, including Fred Harvey. The photographs in this book are glimpses into time of a small village with one-room schools to a bustling community with one of the busiest northsouth highways in Kansas.

Book My First Eighteen Years in Lansing Kansas

Download or read book My First Eighteen Years in Lansing Kansas written by Glenn L. Linaweaver Jr and published by Dorrance Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-12 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By turns nostalgic, humorous, moving and exciting, My First Eighteen Years in Lansing, Kansas, the new memoir by Glenn L. Linaweaver Jr. is a mellow and succinct retelling of his boyhood in the rural Midwest. He describes with honesty and color the hard work on the farm, the excursions into the woods with his father, the high school dances and rowdy parties, and the other characters and incidents which made up his early life. It paints a picture of a simpler, perhaps more reassuring, small- town America that is well worth remembering, and which the fortunate reader will discover is a pleasure to recall, as well. Glenn L. Linaweaver Jr. was born in Lansing, Kansas, a town so small it was not even incorporated until he was a teenager. His family was far from wealthy; they had to grow their own food or hunt for it. It was the end of the Depression and the beginning of World War II rationing; many things were hard to come by. But he remembers the whole community being "in the same class," working hard, and knowing each other. Linaweaver still lives in that same town. His wife of over 50 years, the same girl he met back in those rural schools they attended, passed away unexpectedly from a surgery in 2012.

Book Lansing Correctional Facility

Download or read book Lansing Correctional Facility written by Laura Phillippi and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1868, the Lansing Correctional Facility (formerly the Kansas State Penitentiary) has stood watch over what would become the city of Lansing. Designed by Erasmus Carr, architect of the Kansas State Capitol, the prison is the oldest in Kansas. In the beginning, it housed male and female inmates from Kansas and Oklahoma, as well as inmates serving federal sentences. Today, the facility's population of minimum, medium, maximum, and special management custody offenders is approximately 2,400. Leavenworth County has also seen the addition of the United States Disciplinary Barracks, United States Penitentiary-Leavenworth, and Corrections Corporation of America-Leavenworth, making it the only county in the country to host a state, military, federal, and private prison. Images of America: Lansing Correctional Facility features photographs of the early days, when inmates were on the "silent system" and could not speak to one another, to more modern times when rehabilitation has become an important component of prison life.

Book excerpt: Selected by the Modern Library as one of the 100 best nonfiction books of all time From the Modern Library’s new set of beautifully repackaged hardcover classics by Truman Capote—also available are Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Other Voices, Other Rooms (in one volume), Portraits and Observations, and The Complete Stories Truman Capote’s masterpiece, In Cold Blood, created a sensation when it was first published, serially, in The New Yorker in 1965. The intensively researched, atmospheric narrative of the lives of the Clutter family of Holcomb, Kansas, and of the two men, Richard Eugene Hickock and Perry Edward Smith, who brutally killed them on the night of November 15, 1959, is the seminal work of the “new journalism.” Perry Smith is one of the great dark characters of American literature, full of contradictory emotions. “I thought he was a very nice gentleman,” he says of Herb Clutter. “Soft-spoken. I thought so right up to the moment I cut his throat.” Told in chapters that alternate between the Clutter household and the approach of Smith and Hickock in their black Chevrolet, then between the investigation of the case and the killers’ flight, Capote’s account is so detailed that the reader comes to feel almost like a participant in the events.
