  • Author : Emma Aston
  • Publisher : Liverpool University Press

Download or read book Blessed Thessaly written by Emma Aston and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2024-01-15 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thessaly was a region of great importance in the ancient Greek world, possessing both agricultural abundance and a strategic position between north and south. It presents historians with the challenge of seeing beyond traditional stereotypes (wealth and witches, horses and hospitality) that have coloured perceptions of its people from antiquity to the present day. It also presents a complex and illuminating interaction between polis and ethnos identity. In daily life, most Thessalians primarily operated within, and identified with, their specific polis; at the same time, the regional dimension – being Thessalian – was rarely out of sight for long. It manifested itself in stories told, in deities worshipped, in modes of political co-operation, in language, rituals, sites and objects. Chapter by chapter, this book follows the emergence, development and adaptation of Thessalian regional identity from the Archaic period to the early second century BC. In so doing, rather than rejecting ancient stereotypes as a mere inconvenience for the historian, it considers the constant dialogue between Thessalian self-presentation and depictions of the Thessalian character by other Greeks. It also confronts some of the prejudices and assumptions still influencing modern approaches to studying the region. All in all, the reader is invited to see Thessaly not as a region of marginal significance in Greek history, but as occupying a central role in many aspects of ancient cultural and political discourse.

Book Systemization in Foreign Language Teaching

Download or read book Systemization in Foreign Language Teaching written by Wilfried Decoo and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign language learning is a progressive endeavor. Whatever the method, the learner should advance from one point to another, constantly improving. Growing proficiency entails growing language content. Content is complex, displaying many dimensions. Syllabus designers, textbook authors, and teachers often struggle with the monitoring of content. Computer-assisted systemization helps to handle it in a manageable framework. Besides inventorying content, it ensures more balanced selections, calculated progression, and controlled reiteration of previously learned material. It gauges the usability of authentic material in relation to the level attained. During the teaching process, it allows the instant selection of items needed for a communicative situation, focus on forms, or particular exercises. This book first describes the theoretical background for systemization, including a historical overview, with special attention to the Common European Framework and the new Profiles and Referentials. Next the practical steps for computer-assisted implementation with examples taken from French and English, but applicable to any language.

Download or read book Les enjeux de la nomination des langues written by Andrée Tabouret-Keller and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 1997 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Istanbul et les langues orientales written by Frédéric Hitzel and published by Editions L'Harmattan. This book was released on 1997 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Construire la M diterran e penser les transferts culturels written by Rania Abdellatif and published by Oldenbourg Verlag. This book was released on 2012-02-22 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Calvinus clarissimus theologus

Download or read book Calvinus clarissimus theologus written by Herman J. Selderhuis and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2012-02-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Tenth International Congress on Calvin Research took place at the University of the Free State in Bloemfontein, South Africa. »Reconciliation« was choosen as the overall theme of the plenary papers in order to relate scholarly research to present day issues and, in this case, the recent history of South Africa. It is noteworthy that all presenters have managed to deal with this topic in various ways and without doing injustice to academic standards. Even a good number of short papers took notice of the theme and all of this results in this volume, in which the latest in Research on Calvin is presented.Other than some had expected, the attention for Calvin did not decline after the Calvin Year 2009 in which so many conferences were held and so many books were published. Bloemfontein proved that quite the opposite is true, namely that the 500th celebration of Calvin's birthday gave a boost to research and encouraged many young scholars and from a growing number of countries to deal with the Genevan's theology, biography and influence.
