  • Author : Carol Sanders
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1993-04-08
  • ISBN : 9780521396950

Download or read book French Today written by Carol Sanders and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1993-04-08 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French Today is a profile of the French language in its social context. British and French linguists examine trends in French throughout the French-speaking world, and address issues around prescriptivism, gender and language, and regional languages and dialects. The collection includes overviews of work done in particular areas and deeper analyses of sociolinguistic questions. One theme is how to represent and interpret data relating to language varieties that have been marginalised. Another concerns the ways in which French is adapting to the future, whether as a language of new technology, or as a vehicular language on the continent. All chapters of this book are in English, with examples and quotations in French, and a mixture of references given in both languages. At the end of each chapter, there are also texts in French, serving as illustration and as pointers to further reading.

Book The Arabic dialect of Essaouira Morocco grammar and texts

Download or read book The Arabic dialect of Essaouira Morocco grammar and texts written by Felipe Benjamin Francisco and published by Prensas de la Universidad de Zaragoza. This book was released on 2024-02-05 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study presents, for the first time, a comprehensive descriptive study of the Arabic dialect spoken in the city of Essaouira (Mogador), including updated data on its Muslim and Jewish varieties. The Muslim variety of the local Arabic had been ignored for more than a century since dialectologists believed that the city's population was mostly ethnically Amazigh speaking, what this study proved to be a misconception. The book also contains data on the rural dialect of the Chiadma territory, precisely the city of Aquermoud in the surroundings of Essaouira – never described before. New oral texts by some of the remaining Jewish speakers in the city and in the diaspora are also included.

Book Arabic Historical Dialectology

Download or read book Arabic Historical Dialectology written by Clive Holes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, by a group of leading international scholars, outlines the history of the spoken dialects of Arabic from the Arab Conquests of the seventh century up to the present day. It specifically investigates the evolution of Arabic as a spoken language, in contrast to the many existing studies that focus on written Classical or Modern Standard Arabic. The volume begins with a discursive introduction that deals with important issues in the general scholarly context, including the indigenous myth and probable reality of the history of Arabic; Arabic dialect geography and typology; types of internally and externally motivated linguistic change; social indexicalisation; and pidginization and creolization in Arabic-speaking communities. Most chapters then focus on developments in a specific region - Mauritania, the Maghreb, Egypt, the Levant, the Northern Fertile Crescent, the Gulf, and South Arabia - with one exploring Judaeo-Arabic, a group of varieties historically spread over a wider area. The remaining two chapters in the volume examine individual linguistic features of particular historical interest and controversy, specifically the origin and evolution of the b- verbal prefix, and the adnominal linker -an/-in. The volume will be of interest to scholars and students of the linguistic and social history of Arabic as well as to comparative linguists interested in topics such as linguistic typology and language change.

Book Discursive Geographies G ographies discursives

Download or read book Discursive Geographies G ographies discursives written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present collection of essays follows in the wake of recent work in cultural geography challenging the idea that maps are scientifically neutral entities, or that space, unlike time, is immobile. In defining space, place and geography as forms of textuality, the essays collected in this volume examine the ways in which postcolonial and metropolitan literary and filmic texts in French can at once inscribe and produce place and space, and thereby participate in forms of “discursive geographies.” Contributors: François Bon; Alexandre Dauge-Roth; Habiba Deming; Zakaria Fatih; Jeanne Garane; Patricia Geesey; Greg Hainge; Sirène Harb; Jean-Luc Joly; Chantal Kalisa; Michel Laronde; Valérie Loichot; Mary McCullough; Michael O’Riley; Pascale Perraudin; Walter Putnam; Antoine Stéphani; Abdourahman A. Book Heritage and Exchanges

Download or read book Heritage and Exchanges written by Julie Dumonteil and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-28 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the proceedings of an international seminar held at the University of La Reunion in November 2014, the outcome of a pluridisciplinary project bringing together a number of research centres, including the Federation of Research Centers Observatoire Scientifique de Océan Indien, CALTS Hyderabad, and AUSTRALEX Adelaide. Offering a reflection on scholarship and plural identity constructions, with a specific focus on the Indian Ocean area, the book provides an in-depth discussion of the concepts of “heritage and exchanges” in Indian Ocean countries. The volume is divided into two parts, with the first section, focusing on the concept of heritage, examining intercultural and multilingual legacies which influence the construction and evolution of identity at the level of the individual. The second section deals with the notion and dynamics of exchange, regarding both educational policies in multilingual and intercultural contexts and multilingual and intercultural language learning processes. The heritage and exchanges explored throughout the volume attest to cultural and linguistic pluralities which are part of languages and cultures in contact, but which also reveal a plural yet partitioned world, influenced by subjective representations. This volume is particularly unique given its intense focus on a relatively unexplored geographical area, the Indian Ocean, home to several English and French speaking countries and endowed with a diverse educational and cultural colonial legacy. Furthermore, as a result of its interdisciplinary nature and topics, this bilingual book will appeal to a wide and international readership interested in questions pertaining to multilingualism and interculturalism in learning, teaching and training contexts, and will represent an invaluable source of information for academics, students, and educationalists wishing to specialize in the theory and practice of education.

Book Ex tra territorial

Download or read book Ex tra territorial written by Didier Lassalle and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2014-08-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a judicial concept dating back to the 17th century, the term ex(tra)territoriality has long excited the interest of scholars and writers who have, since the 20th century, not hesitated to appropriate the notion, widening and transforming it in the process. This transfer to the field of humanities has opened a new space of reflection, a space for imagination, through the means of a creative re-reading, among others, which has given rise to new but related concepts such as “deterritorialization”. To take into account the growing importance of this extraterritoriality paradigm reassessing the idea of territory in literature, culture and languages, this book offers an interdisciplinary and plurilingual journey through four centuries, four continents and a dozen languages, from literature to new media, encompassing philosophy, history, linguistics, the press, the cinema...

Book With Alexander in India and Central Asia

Download or read book With Alexander in India and Central Asia written by Claudia Antonetti and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander conquered most parts of the Western World, but there is a great deal of controversy over his invasion of India, the least known of his campaigns. In BC 327 Alexander came to India, and tried to cross the Jhelum river for the invasion, but was then confronted by King Porus who ruled an area in what is now the Punjab. According to Indian history he was stopped by Porus at his entry into the country, but most of the world still believes that Alexander won the battle. Fearing the prospect of facing other large armies and exhausted by years of campaigning, Alexander's army mutinied at the Hyphasis River, refusing to march farther east. This river thus marks the easternmost extent of Alexander's conquests. Twelve papers in this volume examine aspects of Alexander’s Indian campaign, the relationship between him and his generals, the potential to use Indian sources, and evidence for the influence of policies of Alexander in neighboring areas such as Iran and Russia.

Book Lisan Al Arab

Download or read book Lisan Al Arab written by Muntasir Fayez Faris Al-Hamad and published by LIT Verlag Münster. This book was released on 2017 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The necessity of studying Arabic dialects has attracted more attention in the recent years. Qatar University chose to support the growing academic interest and research in the field by hosting the Association Internationale de Dialectologie Arabe (AIDA) conference in 2013. The AIDA10 conference and the tenth volume of AIDA proceedings show that a good deal of change and development in the field is occurring. Fewer papers deal on hitherto unknown dialects as the white spots on the map of Arabic dialects have significantly shrunk. More papers focus on syntactical issues because we now possess more and larger text collections. Papers using "change" in their titles indicate that Arabic dialectology has a long history. The time has come to re-examine the studies of the 1940s, 50s, and 60s concerning the dialects of certain regions. This book includes twenty one essays with six written in French.
