Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Method of Teaching Language in the Primary Grades The series of lessons in this Bulletin is the outcome of an attempt to make certain language forms matters of habit; that is, to so fix them that when the necessity for their use arises, the child need not go over in his mind any definition previously learned, nor think of any rule by which he could choose the correct form to be used. The general idea has been to get the attention upon the form first, and gradually to lead the child to the place where the subject-matter only is in mind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of Language in the Primary Grades: Supplement to the Sonoma County Course of Study, Adopted, June, 1904 The method used has been. To bring the proper setting before the child, either actually or in imagi nation. The teacher gives the proper form to be used, and the child imitates her by using the form. The best results will come if the attention of the child is exclusively upon the form we wish to teach him, without too much paraphernalia to divide that atten tion. To illustrate: The child is to be taught to use the form, I saw, in telling about something he has seen before. The teacher produces the proper condi tions by walking to the window, looking out at some object, then returning to her desk, and saying, I saw a man. The child then imitates her. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Spoken and Written: Book I; Lessons in Language, for Primary Grades The books of this course in English are closely related in purpose, matter, and method. They aim to arouse in our boys and girls an abiding interest in the correct and effective use of the English of to-day as well as to give them a clear insight into the structure of the English language. This book has been carefully planned to meet the needs of primary grades in public and private schools. The authors have employed practically the same methods, and, in part, have used the same material as in the first book of "Modern English," which has met with such pronounced favor. Instead of relying upon technical grammar to mold the daily speech of children, emphasis is laid upon practice in speaking, reading, interpreting, and writing under the guidance of the teacher. The authors believe in the supreme importance of interest in successful language study. They have, therefore, spared no pains in determining upon the topics to be presented and in subjecting their choice to repeated tests in the schoolroom. The lessons are based upon home life, school associations, and familiar sights and sounds in nature. Pictures, stories, poems, exercises, suggested readings, have all been chosen in accordance with this plan, to the end that children may view language less as an unrelated branch of study than as a unifying medium for all school studies and out-of-school experiences. In developing the plan. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book First Primary Language Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Primary Language Book Classic Reprint written by O. S. Reimold and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Primary Language Book This book is designed to meet the requirements for language work in the second grade of Philippine primary schools. The hope of making easier the problem of teaching the Filipino child to talk English has prompted these lessons. The facts, circum stances, and activities which interest him in his everyday life are presented in connected and progressive exercises that lead him to observe, to talk, to write. These familiar incidents about which he has ideas and wishes to speak, have been selected purposely to give him drill in correct expression of his own thoughts. The pictures, simple in outline, full of action, occasionally enlivened by a touch of humor, and supplemented by short reading lessons, may serve to quicken interest and imagination, as well as afford opportunity for class conversation. Instruction in grammar is limited to that which will enable the pupil to do the exercises intelligently. Suggestions to the teachers, in the footnotes and in the back of the book, are made full, simple, and explicit, with the idea of putting each earnest teacher in a position to secure results. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Book in English for Primary and Lower Grammar Grades This little book is the outgrowth of many years of experience in language teaching in all grades of schools. Experience has proved that little progress can be made by the child in the use of language, until he has acquired a mastery of the sentence sense. His thoughts must be so developed that he shall come to feel that the sentence is the unit of language. This power to appreciate the force of the sentence can come to the child by the use of language in expressing his own thoughts, not by talks about its use. Book New Language Exercises Vol 2

Download or read book New Language Exercises Vol 2 written by C. C. Long and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from New Language Exercises, Vol. 2: For Primary Schools Instruction in language often deals too much with the forms of sentences and too little with thought. Grammatical drill has little effect upon the correctness of every-day expression. The child should be continually engaged in forming exact ideas about objects of study, and in expressing them clearly and accurately. Language is a medium, merely, for the expression of thought, and it is important that its nature and purpose be kept in mind. The value of the lessons in this book is to be sought in the habits of observation and reflection they teach, and in the practice they give in forming exact ideas, and in expressing them clearly. Things seen every day, pictures, choice stories, animals, letter-writing, etc., - subjects upon which the thoughts of children exercise themselves spontaneously, - furnish material for these lessons. The terms "noun," "verb," "adjective," etc., have been used for convenience, and not for the purpose of definition and minute grammatical classification. The children will soon become familiar with them and will use them properly, just as they use many other class words which they can not define formally. Most of the exercises in this book have been subjected to the test of class use. it is believed that they will commend themselves to teachers who are seeking rational methods of instruction in language. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language for Little People This book presents daily exercises in the English language for pupils of the Second Reader grade. It is based upon the belief that careful practice is needed in training the child early in life to express kz's own thoughts regarding matters within his own experience, and in leading him to use correct English as a habit. It presupposes a definite time in the daily school program for language work, apart from all other subjects. While the book contains suggestions for each day, its directions are not mandatory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language Games: A Method of Using Play for Establishing Correct Habits of Speech, in Primary Grades When the mother and other members of the family Circle first attempt to teach the baby to talk they approach him play fully, and common intuition tells us that their efforts would not succeed if they did not employ playful methods. These are the Child's first language lessons. The next come when he first ventures forth to the street and play-ground. Some astonishing things happen then in the way of language acquisi tion all kinds of language. Anxious parents and ambitious teachers wonder why the language of the play-ground is taken with so much greater avidity than that of the school class-room or the family circle. The explanation is simple. Play is the magic power. Nearly all growth in language power, whether with adults or with children, comes when the interest is very high. Hardly any gain is ever made through didactic teaching. With Children high interest means almost altogether play interest. When children go into their play activities they put into them the ut most initiative, originality and interest of which they are capable. That throws them wide open mind-open and heart-open and ready to receive. The language that they hear goes right home, finds lodgment and comes out again right away as their language. If we could analyze exhaustively the language content of the mind of a ten-year-old boy we would find little there that was not put there by play interest. If parents and teachers are to hold their own in their efforts at language teach ing, in competition with the play-ground, they must take their cue from the play-ground. That is what this little book has done. The method indicated in it succeeds; and it is the only method that I have ever known to meet with any degree of success in this field. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Games and Rhymes for Language Teaching in the First Four Grades Don't forget that children like familiar things best. Repeat the games many times. The more repetition the stronger the impression of the correct form. Don't introduce an incorrect form. If it already exists, use the game to counteract it, but emit all games that are not needed in your school. They were written for that other school which does need them. Don't mind the little extra work involved in pre paring for the game. The results will more than repay you.
