Book Linguistic Justice

Download or read book Linguistic Justice written by April Baker-Bell and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-28 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together theory, research, and practice to dismantle Anti-Black Linguistic Racism and white linguistic supremacy, this book provides ethnographic snapshots of how Black students navigate and negotiate their linguistic and racial identities across multiple contexts. By highlighting the counterstories of Black students, Baker-Bell demonstrates how traditional approaches to language education do not account for the emotional harm, internalized linguistic racism, or consequences these approaches have on Black students' sense of self and identity. This book presents Anti-Black Linguistic Racism as a framework that explicitly names and richly captures the linguistic violence, persecution, dehumanization, and marginalization Black Language-speakers endure when using their language in schools and in everyday life. To move toward Black linguistic liberation, Baker-Bell introduces a new way forward through Antiracist Black Language Pedagogy, a pedagogical approach that intentionally and unapologetically centers the linguistic, cultural, racial, intellectual, and self-confidence needs of Black students. This volume captures what Antiracist Black Language Pedagogy looks like in classrooms while simultaneously illustrating how theory, research, and practice can operate in tandem in pursuit of linguistic and racial justice. A crucial resource for educators, researchers, professors, and graduate students in language and literacy education, writing studies, sociology of education, sociolinguistics, and critical pedagogy, this book features a range of multimodal examples and practices through instructional maps, charts, artwork, and stories that reflect the urgent need for antiracist language pedagogies in our current social and political climate.

Book Language in Development

Download or read book Language in Development written by Gita Martohardjono and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-17 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explorations of language development in different types of learner populations and across various languages. This volume examines language development in different types of learner populations and across various languages. The contributors analyze experimental studies of child and adult language acquisition, heritage language development, bilingualism, and language disorders. They consider theoretical and methodological issues; language development in children, discussing topics that range from gestures to errors in person and number agreement; and development and attrition of (morpho)syntactic constructions in second language learners, bilinguals, and Alzheimer's patients. The approach is "crosslinguistic" in three senses of the word: the contributors offer analyses of acquisition phenomena in different languages; they consider "crosslinguistic influence," or the potential effects of multiple languages on one another in the mind of the same speaker; and (in a novel use of the term, proposed by the editors) the chapters bring together theoretical and methodological approaches pertinent to the linguistics of language development in children, adults, and heritage speakers.

Download or read book Language Center Handbook 2021 written by Elizabeth Lavolette and published by International Association for Language Learning Technology. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Language Center Handbook 2021 is the latest volume in the International Association for Language Learning Technology's (IALLT) Language Center Management and Language Center Design volumes. The chapters span a much broader geographical area than the previous Language Center Handbook (2018), including authors based in Canada, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Mexico, and the US. Unlike previous IALLT volumes, the definition of language spaces is expanded to embrace language labs, language centers, and self-access learning centers. The topics cover the origins and fundamentals of language spaces, designing and redesigning these spaces, and technologies used and supported by language spaces. For the directors and staff of language spaces, this publication is a valuable resource for developing and reimagining affordances and services. For administrators, the Language Center Handbook 2021 provides a basis for understanding the potential and unique value of language spaces.

Book From Language Lab to Language Center and Beyond

Download or read book From Language Lab to Language Center and Beyond written by Felix A. Kronenberg and published by International Association for Language Learning Te. This book was released on 2017 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The term 'language lab' conjures up a very distinctive image: orderly rows of cubicles designed for individual students to face machines. It is a strong image, so strong that even today's centers are frequently still referred to as labs, despite the staff's insistence on the changed nomenclature. But as this volume shows, today's language centers have dramatically changed, adapted, and evolved since the first language laboratories of the early twentieth century and their dramatic rise during the postwar years. This volume shows how far we have come since the early days of the language laboratory. Inspired by the 50th anniversary IALLT/FLEAT conference at Harvard University (August 11-15, 2015), this publication was conceived to create a mosaic of different directions, of different missions, of different designs that the language centers at the authors' institutions have embraced.
