Book EVERYONE HERE SPOKE SIGN LANGUAGE

Download or read book EVERYONE HERE SPOKE SIGN LANGUAGE written by Nora Ellen GROCE and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the seventeenth century to the early years of the twentieth, the population of Martha’s Vineyard manifested an extremely high rate of profound hereditary deafness. In stark contrast to the experience of most deaf people in our own society, the Vineyarders who were born deaf were so thoroughly integrated into the daily life of the community that they were not seen—and did not see themselves—as handicapped or as a group apart. Deaf people were included in all aspects of life, such as town politics, jobs, church affairs, and social life. How was this possible? On the Vineyard, hearing and deaf islanders alike grew up speaking sign language. This unique sociolinguistic adaptation meant that the usual barriers to communication between the hearing and the deaf, which so isolate many deaf people today, did not exist.

Book Language for Everybody

Download or read book Language for Everybody written by Mario Pei and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-26 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Language for Everybody: What It Is and How to Master It That machine is language - spoken, written, gestural, symbolic. It is language that permits a person to place his thoughts at the disposal of another. Language precedes, accompanies, and follows practically all human endeavor. Without language, ninety-nine percent of human activity would cease. The more we know about an automobile, the better we can take care of it, the better we can use it, the farther and faster we can travel in it. And so with language. What is it? What are its parts? How did it begin and how was it made? What makes it go, and how can we improve it so that it will carry us farther, faster, and more comfortably on the journey of communication? I have written this book to answer these questions simply and helpfully. I have written it as an introduction to lan guage, much as an automotive engineer might take you on a tour that would give you a comprehensive View of how an automobile comes into being. If I may carry the metaphor further, I have planned a tour that will take you to the iron mines of language, through the steel refineries and casting plants, and into the factories, where the parts are made and assembled. I try to tell in a few words what the parts are, and I conduct you to the cutaways, in which you can see the interior machinery in motion. Finally, I take you in a finished car to the proving grounds, where we see what the car can do under all kinds of conditions, and finally to the highway where other cars of all makes and models are streaming past. The car is yours to join with the stream and, whenever you wish, to turn off into the less traveled roads and lanes. Book Fluent Forever

Download or read book Fluent Forever written by Gabriel Wyner and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2014-08-05 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • For anyone who wants to learn a foreign language, this is the method that will finally make the words stick. “A brilliant and thoroughly modern guide to learning new languages.”—Gary Marcus, cognitive psychologist and author of the New York Times bestseller Guitar Zero At thirty years old, Gabriel Wyner speaks six languages fluently. He didn’t learn them in school—who does? Rather, he learned them in the past few years, working on his own and practicing on the subway, using simple techniques and free online resources—and here he wants to show others what he’s discovered. Starting with pronunciation, you’ll learn how to rewire your ears and turn foreign sounds into familiar sounds. You’ll retrain your tongue to produce those sounds accurately, using tricks from opera singers and actors. Next, you’ll begin to tackle words, and connect sounds and spellings to imagery rather than translations, which will enable you to think in a foreign language. And with the help of sophisticated spaced-repetition techniques, you’ll be able to memorize hundreds of words a month in minutes every day. This is brain hacking at its most exciting, taking what we know about neuroscience and linguistics and using it to create the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn a foreign language in the spare minutes of your day.

Book The First 20 Hours

  • Author : Josh Kaufman
  • Publisher : Penguin
  • Release : 2013-06-13
  • ISBN : 1101623047
  • Pages : 288 pages

Download or read book The First 20 Hours written by Josh Kaufman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2013-06-13 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forget the 10,000 hour rule— what if it’s possible to learn the basics of any new skill in 20 hours or less? Take a moment to consider how many things you want to learn to do. What’s on your list? What’s holding you back from getting started? Are you worried about the time and effort it takes to acquire new skills—time you don’t have and effort you can’t spare? Research suggests it takes 10,000 hours to develop a new skill. In this nonstop world when will you ever find that much time and energy? To make matters worse, the early hours of practicing something new are always the most frustrating. That’s why it’s difficult to learn how to speak a new language, play an instrument, hit a golf ball, or shoot great photos. It’s so much easier to watch TV or surf the web . . . In The First 20 Hours, Josh Kaufman offers a systematic approach to rapid skill acquisition— how to learn any new skill as quickly as possible. His method shows you how to deconstruct complex skills, maximize productive practice, and remove common learning barriers. By completing just 20 hours of focused, deliberate practice you’ll go from knowing absolutely nothing to performing noticeably well. Kaufman personally field-tested the methods in this book. You’ll have a front row seat as he develops a personal yoga practice, writes his own web-based computer programs, teaches himself to touch type on a nonstandard keyboard, explores the oldest and most complex board game in history, picks up the ukulele, and learns how to windsurf. Here are a few of the simple techniques he teaches: Define your target performance level: Figure out what your desired level of skill looks like, what you’re trying to achieve, and what you’ll be able to do when you’re done. The more specific, the better. Deconstruct the skill: Most of the things we think of as skills are actually bundles of smaller subskills. If you break down the subcomponents, it’s easier to figure out which ones are most important and practice those first. Eliminate barriers to practice: Removing common distractions and unnecessary effort makes it much easier to sit down and focus on deliberate practice. Create fast feedback loops: Getting accurate, real-time information about how well you’re performing during practice makes it much easier to improve. Whether you want to paint a portrait, launch a start-up, fly an airplane, or juggle flaming chainsaws, The First 20 Hours will help you pick up the basics of any skill in record time . . . and have more fun along the way.

Book Bilingualism for All

Download or read book Bilingualism for All written by Nelson Flores and published by Multilingual Matters. This book was released on 2020-12-16 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is common for scholarly and mainstream discourses on dual language education in the US to frame these programs as inherently socially transformative and to see their proliferation in recent years as a natural means of developing more anti-racist spaces in public schools. In contrast, this book adopts a raciolinguistic perspective that points to the contradictory role that these programs play in both reproducing and challenging racial hierarchies. The book includes 11 chapters that adopt a range of methodological techniques (qualitative, quantitative and textual), disciplinary perspectives (linguistics, sociology and anthropology) and language foci (Spanish, Hebrew and Korean) to examine the ways that dual language education programs in the US often reinforce the racial inequities that they purport to challenge.
