Book Treatment of Error in Second Language Student Writing Second Edition

Download or read book Treatment of Error in Second Language Student Writing Second Edition written by Dana Ferris and published by University of Michigan Press. This book was released on 2011-09-21 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treatment of Error offers a realistic, well-reasoned account of what teachers of multilingual writers need to know about error and how to put what they know to use. As in the first edition, Ferris again persuasively addresses the fundamental error treatment questions that plague novice and expert writing specialists alike: What types of errors should teachers respond to? When should we respond to them? What are the most efficacious ways of responding to them? And ultimately, what role should error treatment play in the teaching of the process of writing? The second edition improves upon the first by exploring changes in the field since 2002, such as the growing diversity in what is called “L2 writers,” the blurring boundaries between “native” and “non-native” speakers of English, the influence of genre studies and corpus linguistics on the teaching of writing, and the need the move beyond “error” to “second language development” in terms of approaching students and their texts. It also explores what teacher preparation programs need to do to train teachers to treat student error. The second edition features * an updating of the literature in all chapters * a new chapter on academic language development * a postscript on how to integrate error treatment/language development suggestions in Chapters 4-6 into a writing class syllabus * the addition of discussion/analysis questions at the end of each chapter, plus suggested readings, to make the book more useful in pedagogy or teacher development workshops

Download or read book Error Analysis in English Language Teaching written by Elvina Arapah and published by Syiah Kuala University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-10 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of language, especially for second/third languages or foreign languages, is inseparable from errors in either oral or written use. In analyzing these language errors, the approach used is contrastively and non-contrastively. This book covers what is means by Error and Mistake, types of language learning errors such as Global and Local Error. In its taxonomies, errors observed in the acquisition of English as a second language as 1) Overgeneralization; 2) Ignorance of rule restriction; 3) Incomplete application of rules; and 4) False concepts hypothesized. Sources of errors are divided into 1) Interference transfer; 2) Intralingual transfer; 3) Context of learning; and 4) Communication strategies. In conducting error analysis, there are several procedures that can be used as a reference: 1) Collecting a sample of learner language, 2) identifying the errors, 3) describing the errors, and 4) explaining the errors. Book Mistakes Writing English How to Avoid Them Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mistakes Writing English How to Avoid Them Classic Reprint written by Marshall T. Bigelow and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mistakes Writing English and How to Avoid Them" is a text authored by Marshall T. Bigelow and is intended as an instructional guide to the improvement of one's English skills. "With the exception of Wordsworth, there is not one celebrated author of this day who has written two pages consecutively without some flagrant impropriety in the grammar." It is this quote that Bigelow chooses to open his work with, a quote that demonstrates the state of the English language, at least as interpreted by some authors. The purpose of "Mistakes Writing English and How to Avoid Them" is to offer teachers and scholars a guide to improving their English by demonstrating some of the most common grammatical errors. The book is divided into easily digestible sections, each of which handles a different grammatical concept. Topics covered include the proper use of the article, pronouns and antecedents, the infinitive mood, use of the participle, conjunctions, prepositions, and much more. A three-part appendix sees several additional topics discussed, and the book is concluded by an index. Marshall T. Bigelow has created a thorough and accessible guide to improving one's English. The book is not intended to be a completely exhaustive overview of grammar, but rather an examination of the most common errors of the language. Many of the examples provided were lifted directly from texts that Bigelow has been responsible for editing, and demonstrate that even professional writers are not immune from making grammatical errors. "Mistakes Writing English and How to Avoid Them" is the sort of book that can benefit everybody that endeavors to read it. For individuals interested in learning how to avoid common errors and become a better writer, Marshall T. Bigelow's guide is essential. Clearly written and well presented, this work is highly recommended. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars who use English as an additional language confront challenges when disseminating their research in the global market of knowledge production dominated by English. English for Research Publication Purposes analyses the experiences and practices of these scholars across the globe and presents "critical plurilingual pedagogies" as a theoretically and empirically informed means of supporting them. This book: • Draws on an empirical study of a Latin American university’s effort to mount a course that provides support to emerging and established scholars who use English as an additional language; • Brings theoretically informed discussions of critical pedagogies, plurilingualism and identity affirmation to better serve plurilingual scholars who seek to publish their research in English-language journals; • Provides examples of classroom activities that can be adapted and adopted to local contexts and realities in a curriculum based on critical plurilingual pedagogies; • Proposes future directions for research into the internationally urgent, growing concerns of global scholars who produce English-medium academic knowledge for the world stage. Incisive and cutting-edge, English for Research Publication Purposes will be key reading for academics and upper-level students working in the areas of ESP, EAP, ERPP, and Applied Linguistics.

This study paper aimed at investigating the grammatical errors committed by grade 9 and 12 pupils in English compositions. The study had the overall goal of identifying the kind of grammatical rules the pupils break. These errors hinder learners from understanding the language and sometimes block or slow down communication. The objectives of the study were: 1. to discover types of grammatical errors that learners make when writing compositions and 2. to discuss rules that were broken for pupils to commit such errors. The research design was a mixed method design which involved both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. Its targeted population was twenty-five (25) teachers of English and one hundred (100) grade 9 and 12 pupils from five selected secondary schools. Random sampling technique was used to arrive at Pupils to be included in the sample. Data for this research was collected using semi-structured interviews and written composition scripts. The compositions were marked with the help of other language teachers. Data was analysed and presented thematically using tables, graphs and discussions of findings. Composition scripts from the pupils were analyzed by looking at the types of errors made. The findings of the research revealed that the common grammar errors committed by secondary school pupils in Petauke District are: Verb tense, subject- verb agreement, pronoun, spellings, word order, and use of articles, double negative, preposition, and wrong word. It was also discovered that Pupils break grammar rules to make grammatical errors. The findings of this research may inform educators and language material developers about the grammatical errors pupils make and the rules they break to make such errors. The findings might also serve as guidance to teachers on how to assist learners to become better sentence writers. Ultimately, the project ends with conclusion and recommendations.
