Book The Origins of Religion and Language Considered in Five Essays Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origins of Religion and Language Considered in Five Essays Classic Reprint written by F. C. Cook and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origins of Religion and Language, Considered in Five Essays The name given to this book on the title-page was suggested by a friend, and it was adopted by the publisher in its first announcement, under the impression that I had proposed or approved it. I felt, however, and still feel, that such a title may seem to promise too much; but after full consideration I have retained it, on the ground that it expresses, clearly and concisely, the. principles which have guided me throughout the work. In the three Essays on the oldest forms of religion of which we have contemporary or trustworthy records, my object has been to prove that they were derived from a common source, and that all that is true, ennobling, and spiritual in them is due to that origin. In the Essay on the Rig Veda, I have first called attention to the certain fact that, at the period when the hymns were produced, two systems co-existed; the one resting upon a moral and spiritual basis; the other wholly naturalistic, personifying and adoring physical forces and agencies. In the second place, I have insisted upon the no less certain, though too often unnoticed fact that, of these two systems, the former was by far the more ancient, and that it represents the fundamental principles which were recognised by the ancestors of the Aryan race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient India: Its Language and Religions The little band of workers who are busy in the workshops of this department of science, have not been accustomed to have the eyes of other men turned upon their doings - their successes and failures. But, in spite, nay, rather in consequence of this, it is right that an attempt should be made to invite even the most disinterested to an inspection of these places of industry, and to point out, piece by piece, the work, or at least part of the work, that has been done there. This book was released on 2016-08-19 with total page 636 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Selected Essays on Language, Mythology and Religion, Vol. 1 of 2 The two volumes which I am now publishing contain a selection of essays on language, mythology, and religion, three subjects intimately connected with each other. There is to my mind no subject more absorbing than the tracing the origin and first growth of human thought - not theoretically, or in accordance with the Hegelian laws of thought, or the Comptian epochs; but historically, and like an Indian trapper, spying for every footprint, every layer, every broken blade that might tell and testify of the former presence of man in his early wanderings and searchings after light and truth. Book The English Bible and the English Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book The English Bible and the English Language Classic Reprint written by Theodore Whitefield Hunt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The English Bible and the English Language Thus early was the Word of God vernacularized. As soon, in fact, as the English nation and church began their existence as soon as education entered and the English people started on their great work of evangelization, their bible was accessible in their own tongue. It at once began to exercise its influence in the native language in all those beneficent forms in which it is still at work. It is most suggestive to note that the two great agencies started historically together at the call of Christianity. Book The Religion of Ancient Egypt

Download or read book The Religion of Ancient Egypt written by William Matthew Flinders Petrie and published by Binker North. This book was released on 1906 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religion of Ancient Egypt is a classic religious studies text by the great pioneering English egyptologist, W. M. Flinders Petrie. Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name.
