As a result computer mediated communication (CMC) should differ greatly compared to face-to-face communication, because of the possibility of staying anonymous and not revealing one’s true identity. This would lead one to think that women and men can participate equally online i.e. in chat rooms and newsgroups as their true gender is invisible to other users.

Stating this more precisely, are there certain communication behaviors attributed to a female language style that appear incidentally in face-to-face communication have incidence in CMC? the study uses specific linguistic markers identified with a face-to-face female language style to test the presence of that language style in the online discourse of Internet technologies. the universe of discourse regarding feminine linguistics demonstrated scholarly agreement to a female language style. the relative recency of CMC in history is responsible for a lean universe of discourse aligned with the technology; yet, it established concurrence that CMC, more specifically email, resembles written conversation. the study utilizes a non-participant observation methodology of a purposive, judgment sample population. the email conversation threads of two online news groups, known as egroups, were observed for ten weeks. A content analysis of these conversation threads revealed a significant difference in the language style of the egroup identified as female when compared to the conversation threads of the egroup identified as male. the investigation conclusively determined that a language style identified as female had incidence in CMC, and, that it occurred more frequently in female-to-female conversation. However, since the incidence of this language style is evident in both groups, the study is inconclusive in identifying the gender of an email's author by the language style.
