Book excerpt: "The present thesis has investigated how French-speaking monolingual and bilingual children with SLI (specific language impairment) performed on various tasks examining language and executive functioning (EF) abilities, in comparison to monolingual and bilingual peers without SLI. Language was investigated in the domains of phonology (novel-word repetition task), vocabulary (picture-pointing and picture-naming tasks) and grammar (elicitation tasks of past tense and object clitics). EF was investigated in the non-verbal domains of response inhibition (stop-signal task), planning (Stocking of Cambridge task), working memory (WM) (spatial WM task), interference inhibition and shifting (local-global task) and in the verbal domain of WM (forward and backward digit span). This is one of the few studies that assesses both diverse language and EF domains within the same population of MOTD, BITD, MOSLI and BISLI children. The main goal of this study was to assess the respective effect of bilingualism and SLI on language and EF, as well as the combined effect of bilingualism and SLI within the same child. More specifically, this study aimed at disentangling the effect of bilingualism and the effect of SLI on language and EF. From a clinical perspective, we hoped to find what is characteristic of SLI as opposed to bilingualism. This could provide insight as to how we should diagnose SLI in bilinguals. From a theoretical perspective, this study aimed at shedding light on the underlying mechanisms driving language acquisition in the context of bilingualism compared to the context of SLI."--Samenvatting auteur.

A battery of tools for Language Impairment Testing in Multilingual Settings (LITMUS) was designed within the Action to achieve these aims, including the Parental Bilingual Questionnaire, the Sentence Repetition Task, the Crosslinguistic Lexical Tasks, the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives, and two nonword repetition tasks that are not language-specific. The chapters in this volume present research on one or more of the LITMUS tasks in bilingual children with typical language development and on use of the LITMUS testing battery for identifying possible language impairment. The work presented here will be of interest for researchers and clinicians alike, and have profound impact in our understanding of bilingual language development and impairment.

Such cognitive benefits of bilingualism have an impact on the processing mechanisms active during language acquisition in a way that results in language variation. Within bilingual populations, the notion of language proximity (or linguistic distance) is also of key importance for deriving variation. In addition, sociolinguistic factors can invest the process of language development and its outcome with an additional layer of complexity, such as schooling, language, dominance, competing motivations, or the emergence of mesolectal varieties, which blur the boundaries of grammatical variants. This is particularly relevant for diglossic speech communities—bilectal, bidialectal, or bivarietal speakers. The defined goal of the present Research Topic is to address whether the bilingual advantage extends to such speakers as well. Thus, ‘Linguistic and Cognitive Profiles for Speakers of Linguistically Proximal Languages and Varieties’ become an important matter within ‘Developmental, Modal, and Pathological Variation’.

Previous research has shown that cognitive control plays a key role in bilingual language management. This hypothesis is further supported by the fact that foreign languages have been found to affect not only the expected linguistic domains, but surprisingly, other non-linguistic domains such as cognitive control, attention, inhibition, and working memory. Somehow, learning languages seems to affect executive/brain functioning. In the literature, this is referred to as the bilingual advantage, meaning that people who learn two or more languages seem to outperform monolinguals in executive functioning skills. In this Special Issue, we first present studies that investigate the bilingual advantage. We also go one step further, by focusing on factors that modulate the effect of bilingualism on cognitive control. In the second, smaller part of our Special Issue, we focus on the cognitive reserve hypothesis with the aim of addressing the following questions: Does the daily use of two or more languages protect the aging individual against cognitive decline? Does lifelong bilingualism protect against brain diseases, such as dementia, later in life?
