The languages compared here are both major and minor, European and non-European, and the text includes contrastive analyses of the most commonly investigated languages (French-German, English-Spanish, Russian-German), as well as some less frequently investigated languages (like Ukrainian, Romanian, Georgian and Thai), which are not as well-represented in phraseological description, despite their scientific interest.

Book excerpt: As soon as we leave our private sphere, we are surrounded by a multitude of written messages in various shapes and forms: billboards, shop names, regulatory signs ('STOP'), memorial plaques, messages on clothing, graffiti and many others. In short, we enter a 'Linguistic Landscape' (LL). Language in the public space, however, often follows very different patterns from most other written texts. It tends to be, for example, syntactically simple, pragmatically right to the point, highly creative, visually oriented and multilingual. LL studies are still a fairly young discipline, with an unsettled research agenda and many questions still open. This introduction approaches language in the public space from a wide variety of linguistic perspectives. It covers some of the well-established topics like multilingualism and aspects of semiotics, but goes far beyond them. Features studied include names, writing systems, grammar, dialect and potential applications for language teaching. Each of the main chapters concludes with a series of questions for reflection or independent research as well as a number of suggestions for further reading. Two hundred b/w photographs provide rich illustration. - Holger Schmitt is a linguist (MA, PhD, Habilitation) who taught English Linguistics at various German universities (Koblenz-Landau, Bonn, Karlsruhe, Wuppertal, Konstanz). His areas of specialisation are sociolinguistics, phonetics and phonology, and educational linguistics.

Book excerpt: This book introduces formal grammar theories that play a role in current linguistic theorizing (Phrase Structure Grammar, Transformational Grammar/Government & Binding, Generalized Phrase Structure Grammar, Lexical Functional Grammar, Categorial Grammar, Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar, Construction Grammar, Tree Adjoining Grammar). The key assumptions are explained and it is shown how the respective theory treats arguments and adjuncts, the active/passive alternation, local reorderings, verb placement, and fronting of constituents over long distances. The analyses are explained with German as the object language. The second part of the book compares these approaches with respect to their predictions regarding language acquisition and psycholinguistic plausibility. The nativism hypothesis, which assumes that humans posses genetically determined innate language-specific knowledge, is critically examined and alternative models of language acquisition are discussed. The second part then addresses controversial issues of current theory building such as the question of flat or binary branching structures being more appropriate, the question whether constructions should be treated on the phrasal or the lexical level, and the question whether abstract, non-visible entities should play a role in syntactic analyses. It is shown that the analyses suggested in the respective frameworks are often translatable into each other. The book closes with a chapter showing how properties common to all languages or to certain classes of languages can be captured.

These questions are addressed in this collection of nine papers from the Third Annual Conference of the Nordic Network for Intercultural Communications. Answers are drawn from general, theoretical, pedagogical and empirical points of view. They agree on one fundamental issue: the language-identity-cutlure complex, dynamic and overlapping rather than static and isomorphic. Since both learner Englishes and second-language varieties are typically non-native forms of English that emerge in language contact situations, it is high time that they are described and compared on an empirical basis in order to draw conceptual and theoretical conclusions with regard to their form, function and acquisition. The present collection of articles places special emphasis on empirical evidence obtained from large-scale analyses of computerised corpora of learner Englishes (such as the International Corpus of Learner English) and of second-language varieties of English (such as the International Corpus of English). It addresses questions such as ‘Are the phenomena we find in ESL and EFL varieties features or errors?’ or ‘How common and wide-spread are features across contact varieties of English?’
