Ce trouble est encore mal connu chez l’adulte. Pourtant, si l’on considère sa prévalence chez l’enfant (entre 6 % et 8 %), la dyslexie toucherait des centaines de milliers d’adultes en France. Nous nous sommes intéressés à l’évolution de la dyslexie dans le temps et à certaines de ses répercussions. Cette étude répond à deux objectifs évaluer les difficultés résiduelles en lecture/écriture chez une population de jeunes adultes dyslexiques, et préciser l’impact de ce trouble sur l’estime de soi. Pour cela, nous avons évalué les capacités en langage écrit au moyen de la batterie ECLAI6+ (Gola-Asmussen et al., 2010) et examiné l’efficience des procédures de lecture de quinze dyslexiques âgés de 16 à 19 ans. Les résultats obtenus nous permettent de confirmer le caractère persistant des difficultés d’identification des mots écrits et de transcription. Une prédominance de profils de dyslexie mixte a été établie, les deux procédures de lecture étant affectées chez la plupart des sujets. L’estime de soi a été explorée au moyen de l’Echelle Toulousaine d’Estime de Soi (Oubrayrie et al., 1994, in Sordes-Ader et al., 1998). Nos résultats confirment l’hypothèse d’une estime de soi souvent dévalorisée, en particulier dans le domaine scolaire. D’autre part, un questionnaire élaboré pour ce mémoire a été proposé aux participants dans le but de compléter cet état des lieux par des données qualitatives. Nous retenons que des liens pourraient exister entre le cursus scolaire et l’estime de soi, ainsi qu’entre le niveau de langage écrit et l’estime de soi.

Indeed, one child out of 20 experiences one or more seizures before the age of 5, and one in a hundred develops epilepsy as a chronic disorder. Approximately half of these children with epilepsy display academic difficulties and/or behavioral disorders. Moreoever, it is now believed that a sizable proportion of children with learning disability suffer from undiagnosed epilepsy. While a great number of textbooks have been devoted to various medical aspects of chi- hood epilepsy (diagnosis, genetics, etiology, drug and surgical treatment, etc.), there have been no comprehensive accounts of the cognitive consequences of this condition. Advance of medical knowledge has shown that childhood epilepsy should not be considered as a single disorder but encompasses a whole range of different conditions that exhibit specific clinical EEG and outcome characteristics. It is not becoming apparent that these various clinical entities have different cognitive expression that yet need to be specified. The purpose of this book is to provide a complete up-to-date analysis of this multi-faceted pathology.

Many now believe that the brain is what makes us human, and it seems that neuroscientists are poised to become the new experts in the management of human conduct. Neuro describes the key developments—theoretical, technological, economic, and biopolitical—that have enabled the neurosciences to gain such traction outside the laboratory. It explores the ways neurobiological conceptions of personhood are influencing everything from child rearing to criminal justice, and are transforming the ways we "know ourselves" as human beings. In this emerging neuro-ontology, we are not "determined" by our neurobiology: on the contrary, it appears that we can and should seek to improve ourselves by understanding and acting on our brains. Neuro examines the implications of this emerging trend, weighing the promises against the perils, and evaluating some widely held concerns about a neurobiological "colonization" of the social and human sciences.
