Download or read book Winston County Alabama Cemeteries Volume 1 written by Robin Sterling and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2013-07-15 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The cemeteries of Winston County contain the ancestors of the descendants who populate the county. They contain the remains of the earliest settlers, Civil War soldiers, early county officials and politicians, merchants, tradesmen, farmers, and their familes. Without their successful efforts to carve an existence out of the Winston County wildnerness, the rest of us would not be here. Much of the history of the county was written on the old tombstones found across the county. Volume I of this two volume series alphabetically covers Winston County Cemeteries A through L beginning with the Addison Church of God Cemetery and ending with the Liberty Grove Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery. The book contains dozens of pictures of the cemeteries plus hundreds of annotations which include sites of unmarked graves mentioned in newspaper accounts plus the company and unit of every known Civil War era soldier, both Union and Confederate. The book concludes with a full name index.

Book excerpt: Examining the blues genre by region, and describing the differences unique to each, make this a must-have for music scholars and lay readers alike. A melding of many types of music such as ragtime, spiritual, jug band, and other influences came together in what we now call the blues. Blues: A Regional Experience is the most comprehensive and up-to-date reference book of blues performers yet published, correcting many errors in the existing literature. Arranged mainly by ecoregions of the United States, this volume traces the history of blues from one region to another, identifying the unique sounds and performers of that area. Each section begins with a brief introduction, including a discussion of the region's culture and its influence on blues music. Chapters take an in-depth look at blues styles from the following regions: Virginia and the tidewater area, Carolinas and the Piedmont area, the Appalachians and Alabama, the Mississippi Delta, Greater Texas, the Lower Midwest, the Midwest, the Northeast, and California and the West. Biographical sketches of musicians such as B.B. King and T-Bone Walker include parental data and up-to-date biographical information, including full names, pseudonyms, and burial place, when available. The work includes a chapter devoted to the Vaudeville era, presenting much information never before published. A chronology, selected artists' CD discography, and bibliography round out this title for students and music fans.

This type of county history book can help one develop ideas or paths to those missing ancestors by showing the customs and traditions of the local residents.

Book Pioneer Families of Sumter County Alabama

Download or read book Pioneer Families of Sumter County Alabama written by Nellie Morris Jenkins and published by Southern Historical Press. This book was released on 2018-07-28 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By: Nelle Morris Jenkins, Pub. 1961, Reprinted 2018, 276 pages, Index, ISBN #0-89308-944-3. Sumter County was created in 1832 from lands ceded from the Choctaw Nation. Its early settlers were French exploers who came up from Mobile. This book begins with a historical background of the county and then moves into the genealogical records found in old Church records. One chapter is devoted to death notices in early newspapers, another chapter is devoted to Tract Book records, showing who entered the land and information about the family. But the main part is devoted to tombstone inscriptions. Almost every inscription is followed with details about the person's family. In most cases the author was able to trace the families back to the Carolinas or Virginia.
