Book excerpt: "Love At Sixty" is the personal account of Elliott and Lynda Landy, two children of the sixties whose chance connection 40 years after college awakens a love suspended by time. It is a story of starting over, of letting go and of rejuvenation told through a passionate and artistic blend of photography and prose. In 2000, inspired by the beauty of their personal relationship and the desire to share its joy with others, famed photographer Elliott Landy began to focus his lens on his life partner Lynda. Touched by the developing imagery, Lynda picked up her pen once again. Through a series of moving and often humorous vignettes she began to chronicle the spiritual and sensual rekindling of their love as well as the complexities of starting over at 60. "Love At Sixty" is the result of their collaboration, a photo verite journal that captures the spontaneity of life, the essence of womanhood and the wonder of love at any age.

Book excerpt: - Fascinating Land Rover love stories from around the globe - Includes magnificent new photos - Portraits of passionate owners - faithful Landy owners discuss their adventures - Celebrates the many uses of the Land Rover, from a wine-growing estate in South Africa, to the urban jungle in Germany, as well as Land Rovers used by the emergency services, as mobile cafes, and as a means to cross the Alps On 29th January 2016 the last Land Rover Defender left the factory halls in Solihull (UK) - a Defender 90 Soft Top with heritage outfit - and went directly to the Jaguar Land Rover Collection exhibition. With this, a great story of success ended: the most original of all Land Rover models had been in mass production for 68 years. In 1948 it was developed for agricultural use, but the robustness of the all-wheel drive vehicle got round quickly. The demand never decreased and there were always new versions and engines. Today, 75 percent of all 'Landies' ever built are still in use worldwide. This declaration of love for the British classic presents portraits of all Land Rover generations and of their most passionate owners.

Book Unconditional Love

Book excerpt: Dogs were never a part of Don Landy's life plan. He and his wife were devoted breeders of show cats, and a dog just didn't seem to fit in the picture. That was, until a brutal winter storm brought a very large, tired and hungry dog to the front door. After experiencing the heartbreak of finding their houseguest a forever home, they realized it was time to add a baby to the family, and before you could say 'impossible', they were the proud owners of a nine and a half week old German Shepherd named Sabrina. Over the next eleven years Sabrina went from one debilitating illness to another. They spent much of our time traveling from one specialist to another, watching and waiting as she underwent six major surgeries. But no matter how intense the pain, her disposition never changed. She loved everyone, and bounded through life with the spirit of a puppy and an ever present smile. Sabrina taught everyone she met the meaning of courage. Each and every day, she demonstrated that life was to be truly lived, for however long God chose to grant her. But the most important lesson Sabrina had to share was that of Unconditional Love. Join Don Landy for this dog's tale of happiness, togetherness, and the everlasting rewards of a pet's love.

Book The Band Photographs 1968 1969

Download or read book The Band Photographs 1968 1969 written by and published by Backbeat Books. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Book). Once in a while a photographer gains the trust of an artist or a band, and his work fuses with that of the artist in such a way that the two become married in the public consciousness. One can think of David Duncan's pictures of Picasso at work or Alfred Wertheimer's pictures of Elvis backstage in 1956. Elliott Landy's chronicle of The Band from 1968-1969 is of similar importance. He was trusted so deeply that this group of photographs is as intimate a portrait of a group of musicians inventing a new music as you are ever likely to come across. Today we call that music "Americana," and it is played all over the world by everyone from Mumford and Sons to the Zac Brown Band. But in 1968, when Elliott first started making these pictures, it was played by six musicians in the town of Woodstock, New York Bob Dylan and a group called The Hawks. They later changed their name to The Band. They had been The Hawks for five years when Bob Dylan pulled them out of Tony Mart's dive bar on the Jersey Shore to be his band.

Book Catch a Wave

Download or read book Catch a Wave written by Peter Ames Carlin and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2007-06-26 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now the subject of the movie Love & Mercy, starring John Cusack! Brian, Carl, and Dennis Wilson, along with Mike Love and Al Jardine--better known as the Beach Boys--rocketed out of a working-class Los Angeles suburb in the early sixties, and their sun-and-surf sound captured the imagination of kids across the world. In a few short years, they rode the wave all the way to the top, standing with the Beatles as one of the world's biggest bands. Despite their utopian visions, infectious hooks, and stunning harmonies, the Beach Boys were beset by drug abuse, jealousy, and terrifying mental illness. In Catch a Wave, Peter Ames Carlin pulls back the curtain on Brian Wilson, one of popular music's most revered luminaries, as well as its biggest mystery. Drawing on hundreds of interviews and never-before heard studio recordings, Carlin follows the Beach Boys from their earliest days through Brian's deepening emotional problems to his triumphant re-emergence with the release of Smile, the legendarily unreleased album he had originally shelved.

Book excerpt: Why is it that a text, particularly a canonical text, is often said to contain a meaning different from what it literally says? How did allegorical readings arise and develop? By looking at such examples as Jewish and Christian interpretations of the Song of Songs and traditional Chinese commentaries on the Confucian classic Book of Poetry, Zhang Longxi discusses allegorical readings from a broad perspective that bridges the usual East/West cultural divide and examines their social and political implications. His approach is wide-ranging, cross-cultural, and cross-disciplinary, exploring allegoresis with regard to religion, philosophy, and literature. In his inquiry into allegory and allegorical interpretation, Zhang examines the idea of a self-explanatory text of the Bible as conceived by Augustine, Aquinas, and Luther; discusses the importance of the literal basis of textual interpretation; and takes up the question of moral responsibility and political allegiance. Zhang, who regards utopia as an allegory of social and political ideas, explores how utopian visions vary in their Chinese and Western expressions, in the process commenting on contemporary literary theory and political readings of literature past and present.

Book Love Subjectivity and Truth

Download or read book Love Subjectivity and Truth written by Rick Anthony Furtak and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-06-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Love, Subjectivity, and Truth engages in a lively manner with the overlapping areas of philosophy and literature, philosophy of emotions, and existential thought. "Subjective truth," a phrase used in Proust's novel In Search of Lost Time, is rich with existential connotations. It invokes Kierkegaard above all, but significantly Nietzsche as well, and other philosophers who thematize love, subjectivity, and truth. In Search of Lost Time is especially concerned about what we can know about others through love. Insofar as it conveys and analyzes experience, the novel is capable not only of exploring existential issues but also of doing something like phenomenology. What we know is shaped by our way of knowing, just as the properties of visible, colored objects are determined by the wavelengths of light our eyes can see. Nowhere does the subjective basis of our awareness appear so evident as it does when we view things through loving eyes. In Proust's novel we find skeptical views about love expressed again and again. However, we also note countercurrents, in which love is shown to provide a unique sort of insight. At those times, love seems to be a prerequisite of veridical apprehension. Love, Subjectivity, and Truth investigates this tension as it is played out in Proust's fiction.

Book The Phenomenology of Love and Reading

Download or read book The Phenomenology of Love and Reading written by Cassandra Falke and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2018-05-31 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current revival of interest in ethics in literary criticism coincides fortuitously with a revival of interest in love in philosophy. The literary return to ethics also coincides with a spate of neuroscientific discoveries about cognition and emotion. But without a philosophical grounding this new work cannot speak convincingly about literature's relationship to our ethical lives. Jean-Luc Marion's articulation of a phenomenology of love provides this philosophical grounding. The Phenomenology of Love and Reading accepts Jean-Luc Marion's argument that love matters for who we are more than anything-more than cognition and more than being itself. Cassandra Falke shows how reading can strengthen our capacity to love by giving us practice in love ́s habits-attention, empathy, and a willingness to be overwhelmed. Confounding our expectations, literature equips us for the confounding events of love, which, Falke suggests, are not rare and fleeting, but rather constitute the most meaningful and durable part of our everyday life.

Download or read book Song of Songs written by Tremper Longman and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2001-09-24 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relationships are a wonderful, mysterious, often elusive, sometimes painful part of the human experience. The most intimate of all human relationships, according to the Bible, is that between a husband and a wife. It is no surprise, therefore, that there is a book of the Bible, the Song of Songs, that focuses on this relationship. What is surprising is how little attention is given to the Song of Songs by scholars, by the church, and by readers of the Bible. With this volume Tremper Longman III unpacks for modern people what this ancient love poem says about the male-female relationship -- and, by analogy, about God's love for his people. Longman's superb study begins with a thorough introduction to the Song of Songs and its background. Longman discusses the book's title, authorship, date, literary style, language, structure, cultural milieu, and theological content. He also canvasses the long history of interpretation of the Song of Songs, a history too often characterized by repression of the text. In the commentary itself, Longman structures the Song of Songs according to its twenty-three poetic units and explains its message verse by verse. The exposition is made clearer by Longman's adoption of an anthropological approach to the text and by his frequent comparisons of the Song of Songs with other ancient Near Eastern literature. Learned yet highly accessible, innovative yet fully informed by past scholarship, this commentary shows the beautiful Song of Songs to be a timeless celebration of human love and sexuality.
