This year, it?s the turn of a Latin American country, with the choice falling on Chile. Sweden and Chile have a lot in common. Both countries are geographically elongated and located on the edge of their respective continents. Ever since the coup which led to a military dictatorship in 1973, connections between the two countries on a human level have been strong. There are still around 50,000 people of Chilean descent living in Sweden. Cultural and scientific ties between the two countries are strong.0At the same time, there are of course major differences ? socially, culturally and politically ? as demonstrated by Chile?s photographic tradition. This exhibition has been compiled by curator Christian Caujolle in collaboration with Rodrigo Gomez Rovira, artistic director of the international festival of photography in Valparaiso. The common grounds of the two projects are the relation between industrial resource development and science in an international perspective. Knowledge production and knowledge transfer from science to industry as well as between different national communities of resource users are very important in the Arctic as is transfer of legitimacy. While in recent years the creative output of Africans living in Europe has received attention from the media and in academia, little critical consideration has been given to African migrants' modes of narration and the manner in which these modes give expression to, or are an expression of, their creators' transcultural realities. Transcultural Modernities: Narrating Africa in Europe responds to this need for reflection by examining the manner in which migrants compose and negotiate their Euro-African affiliations in their narratives. The book brings together scholars in the fields of literary and art criticism, cultural studies, and anthropology for an extensive interdisciplinary exchange on the specific modes of narration displayed in Euro-African literatures, the visual arts, and cinema, as well as offering ethnographic case studies.
