Download or read book The American Landscapes of Asher B Durand 1796 1886 written by Asher Brown Durand and published by Fundacion Juan March. This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The exhibition of works by Asher B. Durand (1796-1886) will be the first ever in Spain and Europe devoted to this 19th-century painter and founder of the American landscape painting school, that would soon become known as the Hudson River School. Through an important selection of 140 works-oils, drawings, and prints (Durand being a pioneer in the latter)-spanning his entire artistic career, the exhibition will reveal his genius as a landscape painter as well as the other themes he treated during his long career: portraits, genre scenes, and bucolic American landscapes. The exhibition will also include a small selection of paintings by Durand's fellow artists and followers. The majority of the works are being loaned by the New York Historical Society, which holds the most important collection of Durand's works. The project is being overseen by Dr. Linda S. Ferber, N-YHS curator and renowned expert on Durand, with the collaboration of noted scholars on Durand and 19th-century American art: Dr. Barbara Novak, Dr. Barbara Dayer Gallati, Dr. Rebecca Bedell, Dr. Roberta Olson, Dr. Marilyn Kushner, and Dr. Kimberly Orcutt.

Book excerpt: Accompanying a major retrospective of Anders Zorn’s work, this is the first volume in English to explore the Swedish Impressionist’s entire career in depth. Anders Zorn (1860–1920) is one of Sweden’s most accomplished and beloved artists. Renowned for his light, expressive watercolors, he attained mastery of the genre at an early age and later applied his techniques to oil painting. Zorn is often compared with the artists John Singer Sargent and Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, contemporaries who also were known for their portraits of high-society figures. Taking up residence in London and then in Paris, Zorn established himself as an international portrait painter, depicting fashionable clients in a style both elegant and relaxed. He became a favorite among wealthy American collectors, bankers, and industrialists who sat for him, including art collector Isabella Stewart Gardner and three U.S. presidents. Although perhaps best known for his portraits, Zorn brought equal skill to painting genre scenes and views of nature. This handsome volume provides a thorough introduction to the artist and his works, from portraiture to landscapes and his famous nudes. Four illustrated essays are accompanied by a chronology, selected bibliography, an exhibition checklist, and an index.

This book was released on 2007-07-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of abstract expressionism in the 1940s, America became the white hot center of the artistic universe. Now, in The Oxford Dictionary of American Art and Artists, the first such volume to appear in three decades, Ann Lee Morgan offers an informative, insightful, and long overdue resource on our nation's artistic heritage. Featuring 945 alphabetically arranged entries, here is an indispensable biographical and critical guide to American art from colonial times to contemporary postmodernism. Readers will find a wealth of factual detail and insightful analysis of the leading American painters, ranging from John Singleton Copley, Thomas Cole, and Mary Cassatt to such modern masters as Jackson Pollack, Romare Bearden, and Andy Warhol. Morgan offers razor-sharp entries on sculptors ranging from Alexander Calder to Louise Nevelson, on photographers such as Berenice Abbott, Man Ray, Walker Evans, and Ansel Adams, and on contemporary installation artists, including video master Bill Viola. In addition, the dictionary provides entries on important individuals connected to the art scene, including collectors such as Peggy Guggenheim and critics such as Clement Greenberg. Morgan also examines notable American institutions, organizations, schools, techniques, styles, and movements. The range of coverage is indeed impressive, but equally important is the quality of analysis that appears in entry after entry. Morgan gives readers a wealth of trustworthy and authoritative information as well as perceptive, well-informed criticism of artists and their work. In addition, the book is thoroughly cross-referenced, so readers can easily find additional information on any topic of interest.
